First name

I call my neighbers, co-workers and friends so on by their family name.
Some friends who have known each other since my childhood or student life are except.
I think that most Japanese do so.
Ordinarlly we say family name with "san". For example, "Tanaka-san".
At the office, we call a person by his position.
For example, "Tanaka kachou" or only "kachou".
Among mothers, sometimes they call each other this way , " ～chan no mama".
That means like " Tom's mam".
In American movies or TV programs, I have often seen the scene that kids call their friend's mother by her last name .
That is unlikely in Japan.
I get confused by called by first name by people who are not so much intimate.
But interestingly, when I speak with foreign people in English, I have no hasitation to be called by first name. That's English Magic!

私は近所の人や職場の人、友人などを彼らの名字で呼びます。
何人かの幼馴染や学生時代の友人は例外ですが。
ほとんどの日本人はそうだと思います。
基本的に私たちは名字に「さん」をつけて呼びます。例えば「田中さん」のように。
職場ではその人の役職で呼ぶこともあります。
例えば「田中課長」とか「課長」だけの場合もあります。
母親たちの間では時折お互いに「～ちゃんのママ」と呼び合います。
「トム君のお母さん」というような意味です。
アメリカの映画やテレビドラマで、しばしば子どもたちが彼らの友達のお母さんのことを
下の名前で呼んでいるのを見かけます。
日本ではありそうもないことです。
私はそれほと親しくない人に下の名前で呼ばれることには抵抗があります。
でも、面白いことに、外国人のひとと英語で話すときは下の名前で呼ばれることに全くためらいがありません。
これはイングリッシュ・マジックですね！
