Jeannot and Colin Book Report
by Shirley
Jeannot and Colin was written by Francois Marie Arouet whose pen name was Voltaire. He was born on November 21, 1694 in Paris. Voltaire’s intelligence, wit and style made him one of French greatest writers and philosophers.
The novel told about two young man named Jeannot and Colin. Jeannot was the son of a dealer in mules ,a man of considerable reputation; Colin owed his existence to a worthy husbandman who did not find himself particularly well off at the end of year . They were both handsome young man and were much attached to each other. However all this changed when Jeannot's parents became parvenus with the help of an army-hospital contractor for old Jeannot's wife captivated the contractor and old Jeannot took the lady's fancy. How ridiculous it was! Jeannot despised his friend Colin from then on ,and several days later , Jeannot followed his father's order to Paris as a nobleman .
Life in Paris was extravagant,he squandered his money freely ,while his parents drained their purse and credit to lower and lower ebb by living in the grandest style . And his tutor who was a man of distinguished manners and profound ignorance taught Jeannot nothing. This kind of life ended when one of his lady mother 's footman ran to tell him "the bailiffs are in the house of my lord and lady ,removing the furniture . All has been seized by the creditors " and his father had already in prison. Nothing had been left but his mother with her former prosperity ,her beauty ,her fault and her foolish extravagance.
The young man ,in more desperate straits than ever ,encountered with Colin who had been at the head of a large tin ,iron ,and copper factory, and had married the daughter of a rich tradesman. Colin was so kind that he succeed in effecting the
father 's release from prison. With the help of Colin ,Jeannot returned to his old home with his parents ,who resumed their former
Occupation. He married Colin's sister who, being like her brother in disposition ,rendered her husband very happy. And so Jeannot the father ,and Jeannotte the mother ,and Jeannot the son came to see that vanity is no true source of happiness .
As Jeannot had said at the end of the novel" all my fashionable friends have proved false to me,and Colin ,i despised ,is the only one who comes to my succor . What a lesson! " As the old saying
goes ,a friend in need is a friend indeed. All the grandeur in the world is not equal in value to a good friend.
