During that time, my three roommates and I were involved in martial arts. We trained in Wrestling, kickboxing, etc. One day while training I dislocated my shoulder. Since I was not able to train, I decided to return to New York for a week. My roommates gave me their share of the rent, but I forgot to pay. However, when I was in New York I made a bank transfer. But, this mistake (not paying the rent) cost me my friendship with my roommates.

一週間後で、フィラデルフィアに帰りました。彼らの賃貸料金を盗むこと誣いりました。彼らに私の行動を怒られました。その時以来、アパートの周りは緊張感になりました。ルームメートは私の言い訳を聞きませんでした。結果はすごくストレスが溜まりました。実は一人のルームメートは遺恨を持っています。一ヶ月間の後、その場合から、落ち込みたり、恥じたり、しました。私の最低瞬間でニューヨークに帰ること決めようと思っていました。
A week later I returned to Philadelphia. They had accused me of stealing the money. From that point on, there was a feeling of tension in the apartment. My roommates would not listen to my explanation. As a result, a tremendous amount of stress built up (between them and me). Actually, one of them still harbors a grudge. After a month I felt depressed and ashamed because of that situation. At my lowest point, I made the decision to return to New York.

一年後、生命で不幸でしたが、面白い漢字を見つけました。その漢字としてイレズミを望みました。私の右の肘は「苦痛」イレズミをしました。もちろん、ほとんどのアメリカ人は漢字を読めませんが、日本に行ったまで、この漢字は私の秘密のに違いない。六年の間この秘密を持っていました。
After a year passed, I was still unhappy with my life, but I found an interesting kanji. I wanted to get that kanji as a tattoo. I got the kanji for “pain” on my right elbow. Of course, most Americans cannot read kanji, so it was my secret until I went to Japan. It was a secret that I keep to myself for six years.

この話は絶対に一番失敗したと思います。しかし、私は私の行動に対する責任を取ることを学びました。失敗をしてから、今いつも私の行動が責任を取りました。それは不運な誤りだが大きな学習体験でした。
It was definitely my biggest mistake. However, I learned to take responsibility for my actions. Although, it was an unfortunate mistake, it was a good learning experience.

In Japan, Mixi is popular, but recently Facebook has also increased in popularity. Last year a friend of mine invited me to join Mixi. Initially, I was hesitant to use Mixi because it was overwhelming. Last month I started to use it again.

When I first started to use Mixi, I had a hard time getting used to the site. After all, it is written solely in Japanese. Now, I would like to use the site to improve my language skills. In order to obtain my goals, I search for people with similar interest. As most people are Japanese, I have to use Japanese in order to communicate. I believe that is the best way I can learn Japanese. In addition, all language use slang, therefore, when using a social networking site it is a great way to learn casual Japanese, slang, etcetera. My American friends prefer Facebook to Mixi. Compared to my Japanese friend who said, “who said Mixi is easier to use, but now she likes using Facebook.” To be honest, I don’t use Facebook that often. I usually don’t care about most other people’s updates. I only read the updates from my close friends.

My experience has mostly been good. Using Mixi, I have been able to make friends who have similar interest. In my opinion, as a student of Japanese it would be good to give Mixi a try.

I heard Kansai-ben for the first time. When I first arrived in Japan, I had only been studying Japanese for a year. Each semester at Kansai Gaidai I took two Japanese classes. A conversation class and a reading and writing class. These classes focused on what is known as Standard Japanese, so we were not allowed to use Kansai-ben during class. As a result, I only learned a few words.

私の友達の彼氏は大阪弁を使っていますが、会話の間にたいていわかりませんでした。私は関西弁を学習しない後悔していました。
My friend's boyfriend only uses Osaka-ben, but during our conversations I usually could not understand him. I regret that I did not learn Kansai-ben.

金曜日は大学の図書館で関西ジャパニーズという本を借りました。しかし、その本は１９９４年出版されました。新しい関西弁の本について見つけたいです。
On Friday I borrowed a book from my university's library called, "Kansai Japanese." However, it was published in 1994. I would like to find a newer book about the Kansai dialect.

日本に来て８ヶ月が経ちました。最初は日本語があまり分からなくて大変でしたが、色々な経験をしました。今はたくさんいい思い出があります。一番楽しかった思い出は、友達と嵐山に行ったことです。私達は花見を目的ために嵐山に行きました。

先月、外国人と日本人の友達を嵐山に行きました。その日は晴れていました。京都に何度もに行きましたが、初めて嵐山に行ったので、とてもうれしかったです。

私達は「渡月橋」という橋を渡ってから、天龍寺の庭は本当に美しいです。桜が咲いていました。私は縁側に座りながら写真を撮っていました。その後でもっとたきさんの友達に会いました。私は嵐山モンキーパークにかったのですが。しかし、行きませんでした。

友達に会った後で、桜の木の下で昼ご飯を食べました。弁当や焼きそばや甘い物を食べました。また、ビールとラム酒を飲みました。

私は皆とフリスビーをしました。私の韓国人の友達はぜんぜんフリスビーを投げることができませんでした。でも友達は、自分で自分のことを笑っていました。電車の中で、皆は色々なことをしたりしました。

日本では、毎日関西外大の授業があるし、でも、友達と楽しい経験がたくさんできて、日本に来て本当によっかたと思います。また来年、大学を卒業します。将来、私は日本で関西外大のように教えたです。

私は友情とはあなたが気にする人々を支援する事だと思っています。私は父に友情についての意見を聞きました。父は「友達は私が新居へ引っ越しするのを手伝ってくれます。でも、親しい友人は(I took out 私に)死体を隠すのを手伝ってくれます。」と言っていました。もちろん、冗談です。
I think friendship is about helping people you care for. I asked my father about his opinion in regards to friendship. My father said, “a friend will help you move, but a best friend will help you hide a body.” Of course, he was only joking.

日本では私の最初の週がすばらしかったです。最初の間に私の友達「静香」に出会いました。静香は私が外国人登録証や携帯電話などを得るのを、手伝ってくれました。また、枚方市と高槻市も案内してくれました。ある日、すごい雨が降っていました。静香は高槻から関西外大までバイクで傘を持ってきてくれました。
My first week in Japan was amazing, and I met my friend, Shizuka. She helped me acquire my “gaijin card,” cell phone, etc. In addition, she also showed me around Hirakata and Takatsuki. One day it was raining very heavily, so she left her home in Takatsuki and brought me an umbrella to me while I was at school.

一年間に三回も私は韓国に行きました。毎回、韓国のおみやげをあげました。将来、静香は中学校の英語の先生になりたいので、練習のためのTOEFLという試験の練習を一緒にしてあげました一年間のうちにTOEFLは１５０点以上も上がりました。やはり、まじめな大学生です。
Over the course of a year, I went to Korea three times. Every time I returned, I brought her Korean gifts. In the future, she wants to become an English teacher at a middle school, so I helped her review for the TOEFL test. During the year her TOEFL score improved by 150 points.

日本では静香が一番大切な人でした。いつか、誰かが私を同じように考えてくれることを願っています。静香が私の事を助けてくれたように、私も私の友達を助ける事が出来るようになりたいです。
Shizuka was the most important person to me in Japan. Someday I hope that someone will think of me the same way. I would also like to help my friends the way she helped me.

アメリカに帰った時、私の食生活は悪くなりました。例えば、たくさん塩分の多い食べ物や甘い物を食べ過ぎます。今、私は太っていますが、韓国と日本に行く前はもっと太っていました。高校の時から重量挙げを始めましたけど、走るのが嫌いです。ウエートリフティングしているのに、健康的な食べ物を食べませんでした。

日本では毎日日本食を食べました。やはり、郷に入っては郷に従えを信じますね。その結果２０キロぐらいやせました。でも今アメリカでの悪い食生活に戻ってしまいました。理由の一つは母が料理する時、皿にたくさんよそいますからいつも食べ過ぎてしまいます。もちろん、私の日本の食生活とアメリカの食生活は絶対に間違います。また、アメリカの料理よりおいしいと思います。私の理想の食事は韓国料理のメニューです。その食事は健康だし、本当においしいし料理です。

私はやせたいので、食生活を変えなくはいけません。その上もっと野菜や果物を食べたり、走ったりしたほうがいいです。体重が減りたいわけです。私はもっと元気になりたいです。

日本と韓国とアメリカの中で、日本の交通機関が一番便利そうです。だから、日本で旅行することが便利で一番好きです。私が日本にいて、一番いいのは、公共交通機関は正確にうごいて便利だということです。バスや電車は便利に使えます。アメリカでは車で色々な所に行かなくてはいけません。
私が日本にいて、一番好きなことは、日本語にいつも囲まれていることです。難しい漢字が簡単になるみたいなので、毎日学校まで漢字を見ます。私は話すのは、あまり自信がありません。でも、友達は私の話が上手になったみたいだと言ってくれます。毎晩,日本語は３時間も勉強します。日本語がペラペラになりたいので、今日本に住んでいて、しょうらいも日本に住みたいです。アメリカの私の大学では英語を話します。アメリカでは私の日本語のクラスでしか日本語を読んだり書いたりできません。My Japanese class, in America, is the only chance I get to use Japanese (i.e. reading, writing, and speaking).

My experience studying abroad first started this past summer in Korea. I studied there for two months before coming to study in Japan. I spent two months in Korea for the summer semester at Yonsei University. I found the transition rather easy with almost no culture shock, but found that that Japan’s weather was too hot.
Between Japan, Korea, and America I have found Japan’s transportation system to be convenient. Perhaps the best things about being in Japan more than the US is the convenience of travel. Both my hometown and my university have virtually no public transportation. As a result of the lack of public transportation, I go to various places using my car.
I am continuously surrounded by the Japanese language which is my favorite aspect about being in Japan. Difficult kanji have become easy since I see them everyday walking to school. Although I lack self-confidence in my speaking ability, my friends tell me that they have seen improvement in my speaking ability. It is important to me that I become good at Japanese as I want to become fluent and live and work in Japan after graduating from college. However, until coming to Japan the only time I spoke in Japanese was when I was in my Japanese class. I feel this is part of the reason why I enjoy being in Japan.
Another aspect to studying abroad is that I get the opportunity to participate in school clubs. One club in particular that I have participated in is the Help Kobe Himawari. The purpose of this club is to let people who intend to become teachers interact with local elementary school children. Back in America I am unable to join clubs or participate in events, such as visiting elementary schools, due to my current job. I want to become a teacher and work in a Japanese university, so I found the interaction with local Hirakata children to be really enjoyable. I am seeking to earn a Master’s Degree in Linguistics focusing on ESL (English as a Second Language), so the opportunity to interact with children who speak no English or very little English is something that I really enjoyed.

高校の時、私の大好きな先生はしんぼうづよくて物分かりのいい人でした。それいらい、私はきょうしになりたいと思っています。私のゆめは日本で英語をおしえたいです。

今、 日本に住んで、関西外国語大学に行っています。日本語の授業はむずかしくなるので、日本語をたくさん勉強しなくてはいけません。ひまな時間は英語のぶんぽうのチューターをしています。私の友だちは韓国人だから、英語が上手じゃないので、たいてい友だちを手つだいます。

私は大学の後、大学院生に入るつもりです。専門は言語学だと思います。でも、まだ大学院をきめていません。アルバニーの大学には入るでしょう。

大学院の後、日本に帰ります。ジェット・プログラムにつとめ入って、小中学生や大学生におしえたいです。そして日本の大学で働いてみたいです。

Title/Subject: American in Korea need help with my student visa.

Dear Consulate General of Japan,

My name is Jesse Robinson and will be studying abroad at Kansai Gaidai come September. I have received my Certificate of Eligibility, however I am in Seoul, South Korea until August 20, 2010. My final destination during my return flight to the United States will be Albany, NY. With that said, I am set to leave the United States on August 27, 2010 with an arrival in Japan at Kansai International Airport on August 28, 2010.

When I return to the United States I will come to New York City to finish my Student Visa process. This is the only reason for my return to the United States, as I would have preferred to finish the student visa process here in Korea. This is a problem that I need a response from you or someone else in your office that will be able to assist my needs.

I ask the following questions. Is it possible for me to complete the visa process since I am in Korea, and if it is not possible to finish the visa process, is there a way that your office could process my application while I am in New York City? I only have a window of a few days, five to be exact, so it is vital that I make my plane flight to Japan on the 27th of August. I cannot do this process by mail as I am in a foreign country and cannot abandon my visa if there is a chance that your office will lose my visa or my certificate of eligibility. I just cannot take that chance, as I am sure you understand my predicament and the precarious situation that I am facing.

In class we were told, ㅂ+ㄴ=ㅁsound. 입니다 despite its spelling sounds like [임니다]. I have been trying to take it at face value and just accept the facts since all romanization writes the word, imnida. However, I cannot let this issue go. My problem and reason for sending this email is as follows.

If, ㅂ+ㄴ=ㅁ, then why is the ㄴ pronounced? If those consonants form an 'm' sound, then why is there a strong 'ni' right after? That is, if the 'p' sound is eliminated then why isn't the 'n' sound. After all, those two combined form the 'm' sound. It seems to me that the 'n' sound should be eliminated, but it is not.

I really want to know why the word sounds as it does and why it shouldn't be pronounced, [이미다] or [임이다]? Any explanation that you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone it's been a while.
I have been busy, and have come to Korea. Right now I am in Seoul. This summer I am studying at Yonsei University taking Korean Language and a class on the Korean War. (I was not sure about which word to use in Japanese.) Classes start today. While I'm here, I'm going to be studying Korean and Japanese, and I brought my Genki 1 textbook with me to do so. Since I will go to Japan in September and study at Kansai Gaidai I think it is important to stay active with my Japanese studies.

In English when we see someone that we have not seen for some time we often say, "It's been a long time. How have you been?"

It's been a long time.　久しぶり。

My question is, can I say, 元気でしたか to express the English phrase, "how have you been?"

Is 久しぶり used as a say all to mean both parts of the English equivalent, or is there a better/more accurate phrase to use?

The homework directions says that I am an eyewitness to a crime, and I need to give a reason why the accused is on trial. I would like to combine my sentences to sound more natural, so here they are.

彼は温泉で女の人を見ていました。
彼は女の人の肌着を盗んでました。

So, I need to know if 1) they make sense, and 2) a way to connect them together.

Would this work?
彼は温泉で女の人を見て、肌着を盗んでいました。

皆さん、こんにちは

I normally don't think of my birthday as anything special, but thus far it is turning out to be a pretty sweet day. My parents chipped in and bought me the new Beatles Box Set, and later this morning I will go to a entertainment retail store called FYE (For Your Entertainment) and by myself seasons 2 and 3 of Scrubs. They give a 20% discount to customers on their birthday, and I already have a $20 gift card, so while normally these two item would cost over $50, I will get them for around $30 or so.

I need to give special thanks to Nevi for the cake, haha!!! How awesome is that! Also thank you to Rieko, Ms.T, and Sand for the early birthday wishes.

How do you feel about the use of しんどいから寝る～?

So, answer the following questions please.

1) Do you use this phrase with only your close friends?
2) Would you use it with people you don't know that well to say good night (say you were at a bar or club talking to a stranger)? Or would you stick to being polite and say, お休みなさい？
3) Is it acceptable for a gaijin to use しんどいから寝る～ or not? I know there are somethings that foreigners can get away with that native speakers cannot. Culture mistakes and the like.
4) Would you be offended if someone said it to you that you didn't know that well?

Rose, here are some photos and my description of how this Japanese invention has made life easier on everyone world wide.

As some people know, I work in a hospital laboratory and am responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients.

In the pictures I took and have provided from my hospital you can see this useful invention. The black rubber stopper on the opposite end of the needle prevents blood from spilling out onto the ground. Because of this invention we are able to collect multiple specimens with only one needle. In the old days (years before I got into this field) it was one needle per specimen.

Picture 1: This is a standard 22 gauge needle. The rubber stopper is hiding a needle.
Picture 2: This is a 22G needle w/ an adapter and a SST (Serum Separator Tube) tube.
Picture 3: This is the same set up as in pic 2, but the rubber stopper has been removed to show you the hidden needle.

Next time I need my blood drawn I will try to make a video to go along with these photos so you can see how this process works.

Why do I see always see katakana written as カタカナ？
Am I mistaken in believing that katakana is not a (native) Japanese word? It isn't a borrowed word as far as I know or can tell.

I understand that there is the school of thought that katakana should be spelled in, well, katakana for the sake of learning. However, if this is a native Japanese word, isn't spelling it katakana incorrect, and going against learning Japanese properly? Shouldn't it be spelled using hiragana?
