I recently watched a strange anime called "A Toast to the Ancestors" made by Oshii Mamoru.

I'm not sure whether or not I liked it, but it certainly held my attention.

The premise of the story is that a 17-year-old woman visits a family, claiming to be a descendant of theirs who has traveled back in time from the near future, and wants to live with them.

However, this premise is ridiculed right in the story itself, along with everything else.

The targets of Oshii's scorn include anime, Noh dramas, advertising, the family, honor, life, and even storytelling itself.

Each episode begins with an explanation about an odd species of bird.

Before the story has even begun, the explanation about how the cuckoo lays its eggs in the nests of other birds suggests that the young woman is a liar.

It's an extremely weird anime, but very skillfully constructed, I think.
