Cut it? You cut what?

I encountered this sentence: Haskell won't cut it.
「Haskellでは無理」という文を見かけた。

Although I didn't know the expression 'cut it', the meaning was obvious.
「cut it」という表現は知らなかったけど、意味は自明だった。

But, you cut what?
でも、何を切るわけ？

Another example: He can't even cut it when he's a stone sober.
もう1つの例：しらふの時でさえ無能のくせに。

I'm not quite sure what the origin of "can't cut it" is. There's another idiom, with about the same meaning, "can't even cut the mustard." It refers to whoever it is not being able to pull off a simple task, so "can't cut it" is probably a more generalized reference to that. It just means that we think the person we're talking about won't succeed.

Thanks for the input! I didn't know "cut the mustard", either, but your explanation seems plausible to me. Very interesting. I did a quick Google research only to find there's no definitive answers to it.
