In the very beginning of the history of radio communication, enthusiasts, like the young boy in the picture, called it "radio-telephone".
電波通信の歴史のごく初期には、絵の中の少年のような熱心な人々は、これを「無線電話」と呼んでいた。

"The radio" wasn't supposed to be one way communication.
ラジオ（電波）というのは、片方向であるべきでなかった。

People were excited that even ordinary people could send out their voice over radio.
電波を使って、普通の人たちが自分の声を送出できることに熱狂していた。

But, we ended up with totally one-way broadcast "radio".

Some people used to predict like 10 years ago that the future of the internet would be similar, which, so far, isn't the case.
