- Why juggle?
Why juggle?
A lot of people ask me, 'How did you come to pick up juggling?'.
たくさんの人が「どうしてジャグリングやろうと思ったの?」と聞く。
I know it's not something you usually try to learn unless you were born into a circus family.
サーカス一家に生まれでもしない限り、ふつうはやろうと思わないことだってのは分かる。
But, it's not that peculiar. Lots of people enjoy juggling as a hobby.
でも、そんなに変なことじゃないんだ。たくさんの人が趣味でジャグリングをやっているし。
I was probably destined from the cradle to become a juggler.
生まれた時から、ジャグラーになる運命だったんだと思う。
When I was in University, I even went to the library to search for a tutorial book for juggling.
大学にいたころ、図書館にジャグリング入門の本がないか探したぐらい。
I have always wanted to learn it.
ずっとやり方が知りたかった。
Then, I finally found a tutorial video when I was 33.
で、33歳のときにとうとう入門ビデオを見つけた。
Watching it, I was struck. Big time.
ビデオを見て、衝撃を受けた。とってもね。
Ever since, I had juggled for a couple of years intensively.
それ以来、2、3年ほどは激しくジャグリングをやったかな。
I was obsessed with it, reading a lot about juggling, and dreamt of it by night.
昼間はジャグリング関連について読みまくり、夜は夢にまで見るほど取り憑かれていた。
I used to tell this joke: I really want to have this sentence engraved on my tomb: 'Here lies a man who loved, wrote, and juggled 7 ball'. The number can't be 6 nor 5. Gotta be 7!
「愛し、書き、そして7ボールをジャグった男、ここに眠る」というふうにお墓に刻まれたいもんだと冗談で言ってたりしてた。数字は6でも5でもなく、7じゃないとダメ!ってね
Non-jugglers can't count the number of balls in the air when there are more than 4 balls.
ジャグラーでない人は4個以上空中にあってもボールの数なんて数えられない。
But, it's got to be 7.
でも、7個じゃなきゃいけないんだ。
The passion has faded after having a baby, though.
子どもができてからは、徐々に情熱が消えていったけどね。

When I was in University, I even went to the library to search for an instructional (or "a how-to") book on juggling. ("Tutorial" is also fine, but I feel the noun usage is more common than the adjective usage.)
Then, I finally found an instructional video when I was 33.
After that, I had juggled for a couple of years intensively. ("Ever since" feels strange to me here, because it usually means "since then up until now". But from the rest of your entry, it seems like you've stopped juggling for a while now. "After that" isn't so great either, but I don't have enough information to suggest something better. You can go back to using "had juggled" if you also have something to compare it to, like when you stopped juggling or something.)
I used to tell this joke: I really want to have this sentence engraved on my tomb: 'Here lies a man who loved, wrote, and juggled 7 balls'. (or "could juggle 7 balls")
Juggling sounds like a fun hobby. I've never tried doing more than 3. That's not impressive at all, hehe.
7 is indeed a good number. (^_^)
Instead of 'ever since', I simply should have used 'Since then'? Yes, I stopped practicing juggling after a couple of years. I sometimes miss the excitement and the joy as well as friends I made through juggling. But, life goes on.
I'm not sure if 'to juggle 7 ball' is acceptable. We jugglers say, 'I can do 5 ball cascade' instead of '5 balls cascade'. In this case '5 ball cascade' refers to a specific pattern using 5 balls. So, I guessed that with '5 ball' I could refer to patterns with 5 balls.
As a juggler, I had been always unsure which is correct:
1) juggle 5 ball
2) juggle 5 balls
3) juggle 5 ball cascade (the most common patter with 5 balls)
4) juggle the 5 ball cascase
It should be either 2 or 4, I suppose. 3 might be acceptable?
To engrave on a tomb, 'juggled 7 balls' is the best one since people don't care about jugglers' jargons. I have no doubts on this, though.
Ah, I see. So it's the name of the move/pattern. In that case, yes, I think you have it about right. 2 and 4 seem "more correct" to me, but I could imagine someone dropping "the". I still don't think I would say it that way, but at least I understand now. I imagined myself saying it, and this is what I get:
1. I can juggle 5 balls.
2. I can juggle/do the 5-ball cascade.
People start to drop 'the' when the noun becomes more like a proper noun, right? Some people don't say 'the' in '[The] Golden Gate Bridge'. If that's the case, I guess jugglers are more likely to say '5-ball cascade' without 'the'.
Anyways, thank you for clearing up things!
As for "[The] Golden Gate Bridge", "the" sounds a lot better to me, especially when referring to something unique like that. But yes, you may sometimes hear native speakers drop "the" when speaking. In writing, perhaps not as much.
