Today I found difference in sense of value on meals between American and Japanese poeple. We usually spend lunch time at restaurant talking about various subjects such as recent news, yesterday's sport game, daily life and so on. It generally takes 30 to 40 mins.
But, my American colleagues buy sandwiches or a humberger with drink and eat them at their desk or cafe space in our office. It takes just 5 mins. I understand the style save time and money and it enable them to get out office earlier.
Some day I had a business meeting at business partner's office in the morning. It took longer than expected and was not ended past noon. So, they prepared samdwiched and drinks for us and we continued the meeting eating them. It was so called lunch on meeting. It is reasonable to proceed meetings seamlessly avoiding interuption of lunch break.
Make sense. But, I am a little tired after the light lunch. I feel as if I am not released from day work all the day before I get out office after work. American poeple probably think the opposit against my feeling. They want to have private time as much as possible by saving lunch time.

Haha. Most of the people at my office eat lunch at their desk because they are stressed out about deadlines and are trying to get their work done.

People are probably just trying to just save money by not going out to eat. Eating out can get wicked expensive.

But, I have to say... Every office has its own feel.. Let me think, where I work we have those who always eat out, those who always eat at their desk, those who will always eat in the office cafe/sitting area, those who skip lunch, those who go to to the gym on their lunch break and those who seem to get the free lunches from the work meetings you just discussed. (I always eat at my desk because, it is cheap to bring my own lunch and I've got my textbooks to read.)

I'm always excited when the higher ups have the lunch meetings you are talking about, because it means the extra food is put in the kitchen and then I can snag some.

Haha. Not all Americans think the opposite of how you feel. Lots of people at my office (myself included) go for walks around the complex because they need to get away from their files and enjoy going out for lunch to get away from their work.
