mogo : Prague, Berlin and Potsdam (0)

I've returned from a travelling alone to Europe. Combination of the cities I visited was very good. Prague is historical city and Berlin is international city, where I felt different taste at streets. I showed photos of the cities I took to my coworkers. They love a night scene in Prague which is more beautiful and fantastic than any other scenic shot I've ever taken. There are a lot of entertainments around the city such as marionete theater, black light theater, church concert, museum, orchestra and so on. I explored the area where Prague catsle, the river and the Old Town are located and enjoyed myself at various entertainment places. I understood the reason why some of my friends strongly recommended me to travel there. I'm sure it is worthy of paying away and putting in. If my wife had not allowed me to go on a trip, I would not have been there for some decades after raising our children. I have to thank for this chance.
I'll post a diary about Berlin and Potsdam next time.

mogo : I passed! (0)

Today I took road test for driver's license. Since I failed one month ago, it was the second time. Finally, I passed.
The tests are held on the weekdays, so applicants who have 9 to 5 full-time work need to get out of office. When I get approval from my boss for absence for several hours and immediately before I get out of office, I have to tell my coworkers the reason why I go out. I feel pressure and stressful by announcing that I go to take road test. Everyone must ask me the result when I come back. Some people like to hear other's unfortunateness. The only thing I have to do is to do my best and show the good result to them.
I've achieved one of my jobs today. I took a deep breath.

mogo : Travelling to Europe (1)

I've started to plan my summer vacation because my apartment hunting is about to be closed. This is a very precious opportunity for me. As a matter of fact, I've decided to travel alone before my family comes to NYC. If I take my little kids with me, it will be difficult to travel to far countries and also cost a lot. My wife was against my idea as expected and she insisted that I should use my vacation to care about her and our kids. I had been pursuading her to agree and finally got green light from her. I'm going to travel to Europe, probably Germany and Czeck.
Nothing is determined. The planning itself is a fun for me.

mogo : The progress of apartment hunting (0)

Recently I've been doing apartment hunting. I've visited many open houses. Because the residencial market in Manhattan has much liquidity and works efficiently, the rent fee is well marked to market. The rent is determined by various factors such as location, neiborhood, building age, amenities, with or without a doorman and elevators and so on.
I suppose that Upper West Side is the most expensive area among those I studied. Since the neiborhood itself is very popular, the rent level is very high even if quality of an apartment is low. I prefer to comfortability inside an apartment because I spend more time inside than in the neiborhood.
Some collegues strongly recommended me to live in Brooklyn. Its rent is much cheaper than the city. It is accessible to the city by subway and provides good environment to live there. I want to live there some day.

mogo : Meals in hot days (0)

Recently it got very hot and humid. Since I can't walk to office with a jacket, I left my jackets at office. The hot temperature reduces my appetite. What is a suitable meal in the summer season? Today I ate Mapo tofu for lunch and Andana Kebab for dinner, both of which were very spicy and increased my appetite. I originally like spicy foods and get addictive to them especially in the summer. The hot weather is really getting to me.
How long does the summer last? I've heard the summer in NY is short and therefore we shall enjoy the precious summer. I understand that, but I don't like hot and humid temperature actually. But, when the winter comes, I may feel the opposite.

mogo : Recent favorate tossed salad (0)

I think tossed salad is a great invention of meal style for single people. It includes a various kind of vegetable with chicken or fish. And we can choose dressing amoung several types. A bowl of salad provides much nutrition by just one meal.
For single people it's difficult to keep several vegetable in a refrigerator. Because they don't eat a blarge portion, some of the vegetable left may get rotten. So, paying for 7 dollars for a bowl is not so a bad deal.
Recently, I found a clerk at deli doesn't care about how much he puts vegetable or meat into a bowl. As a result a bowl is sometimes overflowed. But the price is the same however the portion is.
Only a tossed salad including fried chicken and avocado could be a dinner for me. And plus soup is perfect.

mogo : Summer Vacation (0)

In my workplace half of my team members are taking or took summer vacation. They enjoyed spending in the resorts or went parents' home. I haven't decided what to do and where to go. Returning to Japan is one of options, but I came to NY in May and just a couple of months have passed. I think that now is too early to go back.
I want to travel to the southern part of states or fly to Europe. This is precious opportunity to go to the places I have never been before. The vacation is about one week. During the period I can explore one or two cities. It's difficult to decide where to go. I'd better visit travel agency to get the information of tours and budgets.
I haven't consult with my family in Japan yet. They may ask me to come back. Umm, this is tough decision-making.

mogo : I've started playing golf. (0)

Recently, I tend to feel lazy, although I am not sick. One of the reason is coming from my life style. During the work time I sit on the seat and use a computer all the day. The exercise I do every day is walking to office and walking back home only. I recognized the pattern of my life harms my health. That's why I decided to start playing golf.
Almost all the middle-aged people in my company is into golf. They go to golf courses every weekend. I don't understand their addictiveness. But, some points of what they say are persuasive to me. The cost of play is cheaper than that of Japan. The courses are located near the city and it takes one or two hours to get there. Playing golf with colleagues makes their relationship well.
The golf tournament will be held in September. I need to improve my skill by then. I'll do my best.

mogo : My pants are getting tighter. (1)

Restaurants in the U.S. usually serve much amount of food on a plate. It's sometimes too much to me and then I leave some portion on the dish. Those who has been to Japan from the U.S. can find Japanese meals small in amount. I have been adapted to the amount.
I had been disciplined to eat all the meal by parents when I was a boy. So, I still feel that leftover is morally bad. That's why I try to finish eating meal all even if I'm full. With such an eating habit, I'm getting a little fat. Recently, my pants which had just size to me are getting tighter. I talked this with one of my colleagues and was advised not to overeat. He also said that nobady cares if I leave food on a plate. According to his advice, I decided not to eat all the french-fries accompanying almost all the main dishes. I have to recover my weight.

mogo : How can I select wine? (0)

Recently I tend to more often drink wine both at restaurant and at home. That's because many lines of wine are available in the U.S. at a cheaper price than Japan. It's one of my pleasures to drink glasses of wine before going to bed. I read the a guide book for novices at wine before. It taught me to memory type of grapes first. And then, classify them by country, by blending, by age and so on. Though I totally understood it at the time, I have entirely forgotten it. So, I always worry about selection of wine at restaurants and at wine shops. It is not smart to ask a sommelier for advice. It is difficult to tell what kind of taste I prefer to in English. Because there are too numerous types of wine to keep them in mind, I can't find the wines at another restaurant. Probably, to memorize some favorite grape types is the first thing to do for me.

mogo : I returned from Boston. (1)

During the serial holidays I went to Boston with my friend. Since Boston is not so big city, we could walk and see over the city. The Freedom Trail indicated us the directions to various spots.
We could do sightseeing efficiently by walking along the red line and sometimes using the Trolley Tour. Among others, the oyster restaurant where we had dinner was unforgettable. It was an old American style seafood restaurant. We had waited for more than an hour and half before taking a seat, because it was very crowded with tourists and local poeple at Friday's night. We were told to wait in the bar area. Light menu was available there excluding main dishes like lobster and fish. We ordered half dozen of oysters, clam chowder, mussel and french-fry with local pale ale. When we got the seats upstairs, we were with a full belly. My friend regreted having eaten french-fry which was really redundant. But, we shared and ate a large lobster since we couldn't waste the good opprtunity. Neddless to say, it was amazing!

mogo : They don't go to restaurant in lunch time. (0)

Today I found difference in sense of value on meals between American and Japanese poeple. We usually spend lunch time at restaurant talking about various subjects such as recent news, yesterday's sport game, daily life and so on. It generally takes 30 to 40 mins.
But, my American colleagues buy sandwiches or a humberger with drink and eat them at their desk or cafe space in our office. It takes just 5 mins. I understand the style save time and money and it enable them to get out office earlier.
Some day I had a business meeting at business partner's office in the morning. It took longer than expected and was not ended past noon. So, they prepared samdwiched and drinks for us and we continued the meeting eating them. It was so called lunch on meeting. It is reasonable to proceed meetings seamlessly avoiding interuption of lunch break.
Make sense. But, I am a little tired after the light lunch. I feel as if I am not released from day work all the day before I get out office after work. American poeple probably think the opposit against my feeling. They want to have private time as much as possible by saving lunch time.

mogo : American people like free food. (4)

My company sometimes holds a party such farewell, Chiristmas, year-end and so on. There prepared a lot of dishes and drinks served by catering. Most of American colleagues, especially female poeple, join the parties. Here is another example. The restaurant next to my office provides service that we can get free drink for an hour for 10 poeple if the business card we post into the box at the restaurant is selected. Previously my colleague fortunately won the prise. He invited his team staffs to the free drinks. Then, all the staffs (many of them are female) joined there. If it had been not free, some of them should not have joined.
Through the experiences I came to understand that American female people must like free foods and drinks. They judge cost effectiveness of the lunch or dinner severely. How realistic they are!

Today my business partners invided me lunch. I had a very nice lunch course at the restaurant in the hotel. It included an appetizer, tempura, beef steak and a dessert. Everthing is delicious. I was so satisfied with it.
After having lunch, I went back to work at the office. After a while, I was getting sleepy due to satisfaction. As pushing keyboard, I almost fell into sleep. My boss sometimes watched me. I tries not to sleep. What should I do in such situation? At first, I pinched my left thigh strongly to stimulate myself. But, It was not effective. Secondly, I went to restroom and washed my face with cold water. It was a little effective. Around 2pm was the peak of my sleepy status. At that time, I got an important Email from a co-worker. Then, I concentrated myself on the work. I was rescued by the Email. Thanks.

mogo : Business Casual in the Summer (0)

Summer is coming soon. Office workers will undress a tie and leave a jacket at home or in a locker in office in the business scene. Some companies encourage their employees to dress in business casual style. For instance, a combination of cotton pants, oxford shirt and summer jacket. I tend to wear a business suit even in the summer time. That's because it is hard for me to select a combination of shirt, pants, jacet in the busy morning. And I don't have enough wardrobe. A business suit allows me to consider nothing and just wear it from my closet in rotation.
But, I want a little to try business casual this summer. It may appear cooler than suit. Many apparel shops sell shirt or pants on a one get, one free basis. Using such system, I can prepare some set of combinations.

mogo : Where can I have dinner alone in Manhattan? (0)

We have uncountable restaurants in Manhattan. As known for the melting pot, it is difficult to find out a new category of restaurant which is not covered by currently existing restaurants in Manhattan. Thus, I have a lot of options for dinner.
I am, however, worring about selecting a restaurant for dinner alone. Of course, no restaurants refuges one person having dinner there. I suppose it's OK if it's lunch. Dinner cannot lack conversation with the partner which is crucial element of dinner. And furthermore, I want to avoid being regarded as those who has no friend because of lack of his attraction. That's why I tend to have fast food or buy something at a deli.
But, there is an exception. I can have dinner alone at a Chinese restaurant which provides both options of "stay" and "to go". Fortunately, its menu is much cheaper than any other restaurant and it provides enough volume of dish.
While I am writing this journal, I decide to go to the Chinese Restaurant near my home tomorrow night.

The size of beverage in the U.S. is bigger than that of Japan. An S-size is eough for me even if I am thirsty.
In first food restaurants, some regular sets of hamberger include an M-size beverage. I occasionally can't drink it up.
In case there remains some portion of the beverage, even though I try to drink it as mush as possible, how should I do?
Can I throw away remaining beverage with a package of hamberger into a trash box? If positive, the garbage in the box gets wet.
I found some poeple bring the remaining beverage out of the hamberger shop in order to drink it on the streets.
In a first food restaurant in Japan, a trash box has two-way of dry barbage and remaining beverage. I think it's reasonable.

A new trouble comes to me.
Every one month and half I used to go to hair salon. Since short hair doesn't match me, I usually have my hair cut by half inches to keep its length not so short and not so long.
I heard that in most cases men don't go to hair salon but barber in the U.S. The fee of barber is much cheaper than that of hair salon. That's why I decide to have my hair cut at a barber.
I watch carefully inside of barbers to know how it is when walking around the streets. I found staffs had hair clippers on their hands, not scissors. Do they operate them delicately? Clippers are generally used to cut hair very shortly. I hope to avoid cutting my hair short!
How can I ask them? Are they skillful enough to do what I want?
A month and half have passed since I went to salon previously and now is the time to go!

mogo : Hurry up, NYDMV! (0)

I am planning to go driving with my friend to Boston around the Independent Day. It takes several hours to go there by car. We plan to drive a car in turn. When he gets tired, I will drive for a while. And then I get tired, he will do.
That's why I applied for a driving license two weeks ago and passed the exam successfully. However, a limited permit is not sent to me yet. I heard it would be sent in a week to ten days. Now, two weeks and two days passed. I'm afraid NYDMV fails to proceed to issue it. A beaurocratic office such as NYDMV often fails to do promptly. It may be time to claim NYDMV to confirm the status and take an action ASAP if it don't. It's my job to insist what I want aggressively here in NY.

mogo : Raining days in NY (0)

From early to mid June is called "Tsuyu" in Japan which means the rainy season. Nowadays it rains almost every day. I thought now is the rainy season in NY as well as in Japan. But, my collegue told me there is not the rainy season in NY and the weather this year is unlike usual NY. What is happening to the earth? I felt the climinate in Japan was getting warmer and warmer in several years. I wondered Japan became a part of Southeast Asia in a respect. At the same time, the ice in northern area is melting down. We can see extraordinary climinate every area across the globe. It's time to consider the environmental issue seriously.
Thinking so, I refused to use a plastic bag at seven-eleven today.

mogo : Signals change so quickly! (0)

On my way to the office and return to home, I walk across many crossroads. I believe signals change from green to flashing red too quickly that I cannot usually reach the other side before becoming red light.
Many of passers don't get there as well. Why is it so fast in Manhattan?
It is unfriendly to aged pepole and young children. I am always anxious if someone is involved in a traffic accident. According to traffic rule, motors must yield to pedestrians in any case. However, they don't always comply with the rule. I strongly recommend the signal should change more slowly in order to reduce traffic accidents.

mogo : Luxury Apart in Manhattan (0)

When I was walking around Manhattan with my friend, he found a stone-made building like the Pantheon in the acient Rome standing between office buildings. At a glance, we didn't know what the building was for. A standing board in front of the building indicated it was a luxury retal building. We wanted to enter and see its inside. Asking a doorman for letting us see a room, he accepted us readily.
The room on the top floor was more impressive than we had ever seen. It had two bed rooms and one guest room and was equiped with excellent furniture, household goods and electeical appliamces.
In addition, the residents can use the membership club in the first basement. There were a private theater, a ball room, billiards room and a barber! Who uses? How many people goes there a week? We couldn't imagine.
We realized there is a cleavage in the NY society between the rich and the poor.

mogo : Driving lisence in NY (1)

A driving lisence is mandatory in US. Nobody lives a life without a car in most parts in US, because public transportation system is not enough to replace a car. Exceptionally, it is possible to live within Manhattan without a car possession. Network of Metro and buses spreads over Manhattan and yellow cabs are available for 24 hours.
Even though it is convenient enough, most poeple tend to apply for a driving lisence. That's because the lisence is also useful as an identification. In NY state, we can get a Non-draving ID card, if we don't have to drive for ourselves. I recommend to use the ID instead of a passport.
I am now proceeding to get a driving lisence. Because June is the busy season, the test date for driving on the streets is most likely be late July.

mogo : Cleaning Shop in Manhattan (0)

There are many cleaning shops almost every block in Manhattan. I feel the price formula is very unique.
In case of leaving casual clothes as regular cleaning such as a wash and fold, I pay the fee by pound, not by piece. The price is $1 per pound, which is not so expensive and make me encourage to go to a cleaning shop to save my time.
How about any other area in US? Do they adopt the same pricing system?

mogo : Taxi in a rainy day (0)

It has been raining these days. Although there are a lot of yellow cabs in Mnhattan, most of them are occupied in a rainy day. While waiting for an available taxi coming on the street, I get wet even if I have an umbrella. In a such day, to walk fast is offen better than just waiting for it.
An event suprised me this week. A woman had been waiting for a taxi for a while. After five minutes an availble taxi came and stopped in front of her finally. She was glad to catch the taxi, but a fat salary man attaked her by his shoulder at the moment. She fell down on the street and her cellur phone flied away. The man was crying something and she was claiming to him strictly. I didn't know what had happened to them. Probably, it was the problem which had the right of riding the taxi. After all, the man and his two more collegues got into the taxi.
Passers around there was watching the happening and blamed the man for his violence and rude attitude.
