Naoto : This reminds of me entrance examinations of university. (0)

At recently, I study English for English official approval grade semi-1.
It likes that I have to learn many very difficult idioms or words.
For example, the difference of "clash" , "krash", and "crush".
I haven't study such thing ever.
But after entered university, I don't study grammer.
Entrance examinations questioned a lot of idioms and grammer.
As you know, my English's grammer is often wrong.

But as I can see, you understand what I mean.

Is studying how to speak English good for me than studying many idioms or words?

Naoto : numbers (0)

For English people, 13 is ominous number. So English people tend to adoid using this number.
For example, there aren't often 13th room in hotels.

On the other hand, for Japanese people, 4 is ominous number.
Because in Japanese, it's pronunnciation is same as "死".
"死"　means death.
So there aren't often sickroom in 4th flour in hospitals.

But I think people don't care about it. Almost people isn't superstitious.

Naoto : Is perfect translation possible? (part2) (0)

Strictry speaking, perfect translation is impossible.
Because we can't translate word which is deeply concerned culture.
Do you know this story?
In cetain an international conference, a Japanese man was asked to do job which is terrible troublesome.
And he said, "善処します".
A translator translated this like this, "I'll do my best". Lately, this made a big trouble.

As you know, Japanese culture is said ambiguous culture.
Surely "善処します" have meaing like that. But this word deeply concerned Japanese culture.
If Japanese people say "善処します", people think "I sholudn't have hope" by tacit agreement.

When we refuse the thing which we don't to do, Japanese people tend to avoid refusing directly.
So Japanese have expression such this.

Naoto : Perfect translation is possible? (0)

Do you know famous writer of Japan Literature, Natsume Souseki?
He is great writer.
His the most famous work is "吾輩は猫である".
This work is translated into English, "I'm a cat". But when I see this translation, I thought that perfect translation is unpossible.

The word, "吾輩" surely means I. But "吾輩" feel strict in some way.
But the title in English, "I am a cat". It is cute, isn't it?
Japanese have some ways of indicating "I".
But the each of these have a different nuance.

And my teacher of Aplied English said, "Strictly speaking, If translate "さようなら" into English, translation is "If it should be so" "
Real mean of "さようなら" is "I don't want to leave you, but you must go? If it should be so, there is no help."

I have no confidence of my English of accuracy...

Naoto : about flowers (1)

I suddenly reminded a phrase of Japanese song, "咲き誇る花は散るからこそに美しい".

Traslated simply into English, "Flowers (or blossoms) drop therefore they are beautiful."
I like this phrase.

Because flowers splendidly try to come out in a brief of life and they receive their ends.
They know that there are no eternal life, but they try to live and to come out.

And from 400 years ago of Japan, Heian-age people tended to like fragile things.(But I don't know if I can translate this special Japanese feeling into "fragile".)

Cherry blossoms drop beautifully, so they are loved by Japanese.

But may be not.
When I feel sad, I feel like going fishing. Even if I can't get a fish, I keep fishing all day.
And I feel better. Keeping looking at sea long time make me relaxed.

For English learner especially Japanese, they often make mistakes in speaking English when they use "a" or "the".
It is difficult for English learner to use them perfectly.

A certain Japanese wanted to use taxi, he or she said, "Would you call me taxi?"
What? Is your name taxi!?

It's a common mistake. I also often can't notice like this mistake...
Correct sentence is "Wolud you call me a taxi?"
My teacher told me not to fear using incorrect English, but I absolutly don't want to make mistake like this!

But I think you can recite them in Japanese, but you can't recite them in English"
My teacher is right.
And he said" Because you read English before translate them into Japanese. You should read just English, don't translate into Japanese one by one"

I was impressed on what he said.
Language is alive.

By the way, keeping a diary here are becoming my hobby!
I really thank your corrections and comments!＾＾
