The National Health Insurance(Kokumin Kenko Hoken 国民健康保険)covers anybody who has been in Japan longer than one year.
Even if you were not a paid-up member of the National Health Insulance scheme at the time of illness or injuries, your medical expenses will be covered if you pay the accumulated premium for the period after you arrived in Japan.
About 70% percent of your medical expenses will be covered by such insurance.
Person ineligible for National Health Insurance company health insurance plan, travelers and other short-term residents such as those who vist here for purposes of business conferences, sports or show business.

olds!!! However one of the points stated "mandatory health insurance provided by employers" has never happened!!! Many employers do not pay health insurance benefits here.

日本の国民健康保険The National Health Insurance は、日本では外国人労働者でも勤務先会社の保険に加入できない場合には国保Kokuho に加入することができます。

しかも収入が厳しいときには、減免措置というものあります。たぶん納付額の60%程度はいまでもCUTしているのではないでしょうか。日本でも失業者が増えているので、国保も財政がパンク状態に近いと思いますが、、、、
