Reginait : Excel files in my life! (4)

When I started to work in a Japan one thing that really surprised me was how Japanese uses excel to make text files.

Today I received a file to translate and “BINGO” it was in excel! So one more time I need to transform to a word file. Yes! I need to copy line by line from excel to word! Can you imagine how long it takes?

You might think that I could do it in excel, well it’s not impossible it takes more time than usual.

Another problem is that most of the times when a phrase is translated from Japanese into Portuguese it became really long and I need to format line by line.

There is also some formation that is not possible to do in excel (or sometimes is possible but takes a long time). In Brazil texts should aligned both sides and I didn’t discovered yet how to do it in excel (anybody knows??)

I believe that Japanese use excel because they are used to write in a gridded paper so they feel more comfortable using excel.

Once in a bookstore I found a book called “How to improve your texts in excel!”

Sometimes they also use power point for texts. I can’t understand what the point to use “power point” ! They have to put text boxes and align it phrase by phrase! OMG!

If we can do all the texts in excel with no problem, why Microsoft would develop Word??

Do you use excel for texts? Or I’m the only one complaining here?

Regina is kind of a popular name in Brazil, but I guess not so many people know it meaning.

Regina came from Latin and means queen. In my hometown there’s a church where we can see on the entrance: “Salve Regina Matter Misericordiæ”.

When I went to Hawaii I was really surprised how people knew my name’s meaning. First I went to have a hamburger and the guy ask my name to put on the order, when I said “Regina” he looked me really surprised and said “Oh, what a gorgeous name!”.

Another day when I was applying for tour the attendant looked to me and said: “do you know your name’s meaning? Its means queen, what a beautiful name!!”

It was a surprise for me! I’ve never imagine that people knew my name’s meaning.

Last year I went to Norway and spent 8 days there.

My flight was expected to arrive at 11:25pm at Bergen’s airport.

Beforehand I was checked the bus schedule from the airport to the closest stop to the hostel. I need to get off at “bus station” stop. The bus driver announces each stop but I wasn’t worried about that because my stop supposed to be the last one, then I was just trying to enjoy my bus trip.

When the bus arrived to the last stop, I asked the driver just to confirm “this is the bus station stop?”, for my surprise he said “no! The bus station was 2 stops before!”.

And I made a face like “OMG, what am I supposed to do now???”
I knew that Bergen is a safe city but it was dark and I was alone in a bus!

The kind driver look to me and said: “All right!! I’ll drive you until the bus station!”

On the way to my stop driver explained me many things about the city, the hot spots and also he gave me a map! =)

I have no words to say how thankful I was!
I used to be a trainee in a Public Management Office when I was student.

This office was doing a research to check the quality of the University’s building and I was in charge to apply these surveys to students, teachers and university’s workers.

In my first day, I went to a classroom and a teacher was finishing his class. After he had finish I came to him and ask:

- I’m doing a survey, would you mind to answer it? It will take only few minutes.

He made a sign with the hand to his ear direction…

Then I thought to myself “maybe he had some audition problem and couldn’t hear me very well”… I repeat very loud this time.

-I’M DOING A SURVEY, WOULD YOU MIND TO ANSWER IT? IT WILL TAKE ONLY FEW MINUTES.

There are still some students laughing in the classroom and one came to me and said:

-You don’t need to speak so loud, he can hear you.

I was really confuse and asked to the student:

-And why did he do the sign to his ear???

- Because he is Russian and can’t understand any Portuguese! hahahah

And the teacher looks at me and said in a very break Portuguese:

- I can’t understand Portuguese!

I was so embarrassed that I couldn’t apply any survey, just want to leave the classroom as soon as possible!

Reginait : Tissue paper culture! (3)

When I came for the first time to Japan I got really surprised about how tissue papers get inside Japanese culture!!

When I arrived at my apartment (it was empty with no furniture) I found 5 boxes of tissue paper, the owner of the apartment have bought for me. But I think to myself “what am I supposed to do with 5 boxes of tissue paper in a empty apartment???”.

Later on I realize that Japanese people used to give this kind of “gift” to show thankful or in my case to express their welcomeness. (Other common gifts are soap, washing powder, detergent …)

When I open my bank account also I received one box of tissue paper! Time to time the bank lady come to our office to bring tissue paper boxes.

My friend once rent a car and guesses what did he receive?? BINGO! A tissue paper box!!

Few weeks ago, I went to the bank to withdraw some money, when the doors open a guy come to me and said: “it’s our branch 50th anniversary and this tissue paper box is for you! Thank you so much for choose our bank!”, I didn’t have time to say thank you or anything! and there I was with a new big box of tissue paper on the way to work!

I don’t know how it is in your country… but in Brazil it’s not common give or receives tissue paper boxes. If you open an account you may receive a pen, t-shirts or caps. And the owner never gave me anything! =(

How it is in your country?

Sincerely Hawaii was never the place I really want to go, maybe it's because most of the japaneses go there and it became a common place for me.

For my surprise visiting Hawaii make me undrestood why so many people travel there.

Hawaii is full of energy with a beautiful landscape, exotic culture, magnific cuisine and kind people who makes the place warmer than any other.

Hawaii is also a place if you like water sports! Hanauma bay in Oahu Is. is a very nice spot if you like snorkeling. In Maui during winter time you can see humpback whales with their little babies.

For real hawaiian food a restaurant called "Ono" is the best choice.

The time that spent there was unforgetable! Now I cay say for sure that Hawaii is nice place to visit!
