chino : China Mourning Quake Victims (1)

It's a national mourning day in memory of the Yushu earthquake victims on April 14th. The 7.1-magnitude quake shook the largely Tibetan community at 7:49 a.m. last Wednesday. As of Tuesday, 2,064 people were confirmed dead and 12,135 were injured. The national flag in the square was lowered to half-mast at Tian'anmen Square in the heart of Beijing following the daily flag raising ceremony at daybreak, and crowds of people mourned the dead in Yushu and expressed their silent blessings for the survivors. In Qinghai province, where Yushu is located, people observed three minutes of silence starting 10 am to the sound of sirens and hooting horns of cars, trains and ships. It reminded me of the earthquake in Sichuan 2008. This time, we,all the Chinese people, again united to get through all hardships. There was a Tibetan girl, 15 years old, digged out nine family members by her hands. This really moved me and made me believe that there is hope as long as we don't give up. Let's pray for the dead and bless for the survivors.

chino : Euphemism (2)

Hi guys,

It has been a while since I wrote my last journal. I've been up to my paper, which is about euphemism in English. Euphemism is widely applied in daily life and social life. The word “euphemism” comes from “Greek”, “eu” means “good” or “well”, the root “pheme” means “saying” or “speech”, and “ism” is a noun suffix. According to Oxford English Dictionary (OED), euphemism is “that figure of speech which consists in the substitution of a word or expression of comparatively favorable implication or less unpleasant associations, instead of the harsher or more offensive one that would more precisely designate what is intended”. Such as “The Maker”, “Gosh” and “Our Father” are all euphemisms for “God”.
Generally speaking, there are two kinds of Euphemisms: Negative euphemism and Positive euphemism. Negative euphemism rang between “death, excretion, bodily functions, religious matters, and sex”. For example, “to go to sleep forever, to go to heaven, to be under daisies ” are all euphemisms for “die ”.And we can see from them that euphemism is closely related to culture, especially the religion. Positive euphemism is common in those fields such as occupation, education, politics, and military affairs and so on. For example, “beauticain” is euphemism for “barber” and “intoxicate” for “drunk” .
My paper aims to study the gender differences on the euphemism usage in “Friends”. By comparing the frequency of euphemism usage , the gender differences on language are getting smaller with the development of society. Also,to have better intercultural communication, the semantic and pragmatic problems in cross-culture and the approach to avoiding them are presented.
Do you know any euphemism in your native language? Can you give some examples? Thank you in advance:D

Dear friends in Lang-8,

Hello, What's your favourite food? This time I'd like to introduce a very very hooooooot food to you.
Many people think that China is famous for not only it's long history but also it's delicious and various food. Since I'm from HuNan, I'd like to talk more about the HuNan speciality- "Hot Pot". The first response of people from other provinces will be "you must like hot food" when they hear " I'm from HuNan". Indeed, most of HuNanese are good with hot food. When it's getting cold, we prefer to have "Hot Pot" with friends or families. Even when it's hot, we'd like to take spicy food in air-conditioning room. We always enjoy it very much. Here are some photos taken by me, I hope you will enjoy them:D

Hey my dear friends in Lang-8,

What's your favourite music？This time I would like to introduce some famous Chinese campus ballads . By the way, if you are laerning Chinese and you can sing Chinese campus ballads, you'll be more popular among Chinese.

"Childhood"(童年)sung by Luo Da you created a big influence on both the campus and society. http://www.kupig.cn/html/473/

"No Regret for My Youth",（青春无悔）sung by Lao Lang and Ye Pei. It's a typical song of the campus ballad style, whose strongholds are China's university dormitories, and whose lyrics are sentimental in outlook.

"My Desk Mate"(同桌的你) sung by Lao Lang became extremely popular in China. It can always remind you the precious time in school and what happened between you and your desk mate. http://www.kupig.cn/html/624/

Ye Pei's most famous songs, the naive but beautiful "White Dress Dancing". (白衣飘飘的年代)
Pu shu: "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" (那些花儿), "forest birch"(白桦林) These songs had soft and gentle melodies that left listeners with a leisurely and fresh mood. They caused a strong sympathetic response among university students.

chino : A Dutch In China (8)

A few days ago, one of my classmates met a college teacher from the Netherlands. They talked a lot and my classmate promised to be a guide for him to Changsha interests. Because of the lack of sense of direction, she invited me to join. I said yes immediately. In the way to the destination, we introduced him many fresh things, such as Changsha dialect, Hunan embroidery, bus system. (this is his first time to take bus in China.)

In the hero park, we took a Chinese -style boat to enjoy magnificent scenery. At the same time, we discussed a lot about the National Entrance Examination in china. The final score in the exam probably will determine our future life. Though it’s unreasonable, we have no choice but to accept it. Since no one can figure out any other better educational system. While in the Netherlands, it’s quite free for senior students to choose college, which is very different with that in China.

Besides, he told us that people don’t want to be teachers because the salary is not high enough in the Netherlands. It was a shock to me. In China, if a girl becomes a teacher, others would think it’s very good. To be a teacher means stability and guarantee, especially for girls. Also, the relationship between teachers and students are alienated than that in China because of power distance.

What impressed me most is that he can speak six languaes, Dutch, Lantin, Greek, German,English and Hebrew. Though almost every Chinese college student can speak 3 languages, Mandarin, English and a regional dialect. Hehe, I'm kidding:D
Fortunately, perseverance prevails. I reached there after 40 minutes and I found my classmate smoothly. The show has alredy begun. Several rock band had excting and passionate performance. As time moveed by, the specutators were in higher spirit. They shouted, jumped and sung crazily. The drum Every time the drum hit, it was like hitting upon my heart. At that time, I strongly felt the magic of rock'n roll.It combined srangers together forthe same interest and it represented the young people's attitudes towards life.

What will you do when you say goodbye to a friend who possiblely
you will never see again?

You will just say Goodbye and go away, or hug each other? In
China, we are not used to hug friends when they leave, especially
between opposite-sex friends.

Yesterday a foriengn friend met me for the last time because he was
about to back to his country in a month. When he asked:"what will you do when you say goodbye to someone?" I said without hesitation:"Just say goodbye." I wonder whether it was appropriate.
Different ways of saying goodbye varies in different countries I think.

What will you do when you say goodbye to a opposite-sex friend
who possiblely you will never see again?

I have not written diaries recently not because I have nothing
to say, just I do not have the time. I have finished my exams on
June,25. I thought many students would stay st school to do
part-time job. But the fact is it's hard for us to find a satisfying job. For most of us, a job associated with English is the best choice.
Unfortunately, we can not find jobs like that. Most of the jobs for
university students are delivering publicity papers or selling goods,
which I am unwilling to do. Delivering papers is a waste of time.
Besides, I can not stand that standing there waiting for unknown
customers. Looks like I can not find a good one.

chino : Should we give beggars money? (1)

Have you ever given beggars money?
Should we give beggars money?
In my perspective,I don't think we should give beggars money.

Firstly,I doubt whether all beggars are real ones.As far as I know, some
beggars are very rich.Their begging is a means of deceipt our
sympathy and money.

Secondly, they need to support themselves in a decent way.namely,
earn money by hard work or some skills. If they sing or play guitar,it is acceptable. While,if we give money everytime we met a beggar,it will
not do any help for them,on the contrary,it'll encourage increasingly
people to become beggars.

Finally,I don't think we should give beggars money. It doesnt mean i am pathetic or something like that.Even if we can help one or two,how about the rest hundreds of them?

What's your opinion?

chino : differences between Lang-8 and Myspace (1)

I find that the most obvious difference between this website and
Myspace is that the purposes for members of Lang-8 are pure and
simple , just language-learning,while for Myspace loggers the
purposes are more various and complicated. In Lang-8,this is more
like dot-to-dot communication because we can help each other
at least in one aspect, However, in Myspace, though personal informations are more detailed,we still can hardly find any common interests,
thus making distance further.

Do you have any ideas about this topic?
Your corrections and opinions will be highly apprieciated:D

chino : I'm starving... (0)

At Monday night,I got severe toothache which attributed to my
insomnia.More than that,I was late for the first class next morning:(
What's the reason? A new but unneccessary tooth was growing up,
(maybe it was called "the wisdom tooth",i'm not sure)
causing my 牙龈发炎红肿. In the following days, I had no choice but to
take cake and porridge.Ohhh, poor girl... I'm starving:(
