In America, we usually don't have sashimi in the market. However, depending on where you go (for example, if you go to a place specializing in selling Japanese styled foods), you may be able to find it. Probably not as nice as this though!

Wow, nice article! Your English is good, I could understand what you were saying. Practice always makes perfect. In my area (Toronto, Canada) they don't sell sashimi, but they do sell sushi rolls on plastic trays. I would like you to write more, and post more pictures from Japan. I'll try to write something in Japanese once I learn how to make sentences! :P

It's not a bad piece, but you should learn to use "a" and "the" properly. "a" means anything out of a specific group, while "the" means one thing in a group.

example of "a": I rode a bus to Shinjuku
meaning: out of all the buses in Tokyo, i took one of them. But it doesn't matter WHICH one I took.

example of "the": I rode the 33 bus to Shinjuku
meaning: out of all the buses in Tokyo, I took THIS SPECIFIC bus, THE 33 bus.

So a conversation could go,

X: So, today I took a bus to shinjuku.
Y: Oh really? Which one did you take?
X: I took the 33.

or, X could say, "I took the bus from my house", meaning that there is only one specific bus that he can take from his house.

お刺身が大好きです。Both sushi and sashimi are popular but so expensive here in London. I love it but I rarely have it. In supermarkets you just get cheap sushi with poor quality rice and you won’t really see it at markets. Fortunately London’s biggest fish market, Billingsgate, is near our flat. They only sell very large portions of fish so I have to spend maybe £30/¥6000 for tuna. I often cut this in to portions for my friends though. That stile laves so much. I love Tsukiji though, I’ve bought some amazing fish from there. I miss Japanese supermarkets as well!

Yes, sashimi is very popular. But, not really at the market. Most of the time it is bought at a place to eat dinner.. I love sushi and sashimi, they are my favorite food in the world.

Most Americans think "sushi" is the Japanese word for raw fish. I only found out that sushi has other ingredients when I started studying Japanese. I've never eaten raw fish (or raw meat of any kind) deliberately, but I've occasionally bitten into undercooked fish accidentally, and while it's not as bad as undercooked chicken or beef, it's still not something I really care to eat on purpose. Vegetables and fruits are good raw, but meat needs to be cooked, as far as I'm concerned.

I do like fish when it's cooked, though, particularly if it's cooked in lemon and/or water. Around here, that puts me in the minority: a lot of people in this part of the country don't really like fish very much. About half of Ohioans will eat fish only if it's batter-dipped and fried, and most of the rest won't eat fish at all (except for canned tuna, but that's different). This may have something to do with the fact that we're several hundred miles from the Chesapeake Bay and even farther from the actual ocean, too far to drive in one day. Most of our seafood comes from Lake Erie, which is not exactly famous for its pristine condition, and the best way to get fish that's reasonably fresh is to buy it frozen.
Sep 11th 2009 11:47 Jonadab

Oh, and to answer your other question: supermarkets in the US do sell uncooked fish, but it's not sliced (filleted to remove the bones, maybe, but that's all), and the general assumption is that you're going to take it home and cook it, just like you would do with the beef, chicken, or pork, which are also sold raw.
