I just wanted to say thank you for your input. It's very interesting because I had no idea that all of the Japanese writing system was Chinese substitutions. I knew hiragana was a breakdown of kanji, and I knew kanji meant "Chinese character" more or less, but I never thought about the concept of kana as a whole.
