先日実家の山口に帰ったら、あちらこちらに郊外型の大型ショッピングセンターが出来ていることに驚きました。

Those are very convenient and attractive because we can go by car and can park easily, and there are variety kinds of shop at one place.

車で行けて、駐車場にも困らず、色々な店舗が一つの場所に集まっているので魅力的であり、便利です。

But, I wonder how the conventional shopping area has become? That has been the central place in Yamaguchi city and a lot of people gather there. As the population in the city has not been increased, the numbers of people who go to there must have been decreased, while a lot of people go to the big shopping center in the suburb.

でも昔のあの商店街はどうなっちゃうのだろうと考えました。そこはずっと山口の中心地であり、多くの人が集う場所でした。人口が増えているわけではないので、郊外の大型ショッピングセンターに人が流れた分、既存の商店街から人が離れていっているはずです。

In fact, that kind of phenomenon has occurred in many cities in Japan. A huge shopping market comes suddenly like a vulture one day, and it breaks up tradition of the city. After that, conventional shopping street become slummed.

こんな話、実は日本のあちらこちらで起こっているみたいですね。大型ショッピングセンターが突然ハゲタカのように現れて町を食いつぶす。伝統的な町の中心街は気がついたらスラム化。

How is it like in Yamaguchi city?
Though I have not been to that shopping street, I want to go there when I have a chance next time. I hope it is still attractive place.

山口の場合はどうでしょうか。
市街地のあの商店街には随分行ってないのですが、今度帰省したときはどうなっているか見てこようと思います。スラム外になってなければいいのですが。

先日読んだ捕鯨に関するコラムで、日本は捕鯨禁止の圧力に対して必死に対応しているが、鯨の味も知らない今の子供たちが大人になったときに、捕鯨解禁になったからといって果たして鯨を食べたがるのか？とい意見が書かれていました。

I think it is true.

もっともだと思います。

However, I think that Japan is eager to release bun of whale hunting not only for the hope to eat whales again, and for keeping Japanese food culture.

しかしながら、日本が捕鯨解禁に必死なのは、何も鯨がまた食べたい、食文化を守りたいという理由だけではないのではないのでしょうか。

As you know, Japan's food self-sufficiency rate is only 40%, which is the lowest in the developed countries. We depend most of the food supply on import from abroad. But I wonder they supply us with foods forever.

ご存知の通り、日本の食料自給率は先進国中最低で40％程度です。食料のほとんどを他国からの輸入に頼っている現状ですが、いつまでも他国は日本にせっせと食料を輸出してくれるとは限らないのではないのでしょうか。

What if world food crisis comes in the near future?

もしも世界的な食糧危機がおとずれたら？

They should firstly think their own.
Do you care of neighborhoods even if you are almost dying for hungry?

まずは自分の国のことに必死なはずです。
自分が精一杯なのに、隣の人の事に頭がまわりますか？

I really feel that in today's steep rise of food prices.

食料の高騰が叫ばれている今日、切に感じます。

I wonder Japan’s real intent for recovery of whaling is to keep the way we eat for the future.

捕鯨云々の本当の意図は、将来的に食べる手段の確保なのではないのでしょうか。

以下は最近読んだ本から。

They say, a genius has not been genius from the beginning. A genius is what is to be created, and everyone have a possibility to be a genius.

天才は最初から天才なのではないとのことです。天才は作られるものであり、誰もが天才になれる可能性があるというのです。

If a person has done some activity and he feel accomplishment or he receive a praise from others, dopamine, which is pleasurable substance for human being, would come out from his brain. Then he would feel he want to do it again.

もし人が何かを実行して達成感を感じたり、褒められたりすると、快感物質であるドーパミンが脳から分泌されます。そしてその人はその動作をもう一度したいと感じます。

If this circulation would work well, a person would come to like to do it and would make effort continuously naturally to obtain pleasurable feeling. He would be devoured with doing it, finally he become a person with great skill of it.

もしこの循環がうまく働けば、人はそれを好きになり、快感を得るために絶え間ない努力をすることでしょう。彼はそれの虜になり、最後にはそれの達人となるのです。

Regardless of science or sports or language or anything, it seems that a genius would come out through the above process.

科学、スポーツ、語学その他に関わらず、天才は上記の過程を経て生まれるというものです。

Please imagine that you will go to Osaka by Shinkansen express from Yokohama St, and will stay at a hotel in Osaka one night, and then you will come back Yokohama next day. In this case, total cost is as follows:

Round tickets: 13,700x2=27,400 yen
Hotel fee: 10,000 yen
-----------------------------------------------------
Total: 37,400 yen

Of course, the total cost would depend on what hotel you stay. But if you use a package ticket instead of that, all the costs would be below 30,000 yen even if you stay at a high-grade hotel!

The package ticket is available on the web site. The only disadvantage of it is that the trains we can use are limited. But, I think you would not care about that.

It’s quite uncomfortable in this season, but there are things we can do for this season. Reading books and seeing movie at home is a fun of this season for me.

It seems that Mitsubishi motor co. will release electric vehicle within two years. It’s not hybrid car, but full electric car.

三菱自動車が二年後に電気自動車を実用化させるとのことです。ハイブリッド車ではなく、完全な電気自動車です。

Considering the rise of gasoline price lately and abnormal weather caused by CO2 emission, I wonder gasoline-powered vehicle would be disappeared in near future.

このところのガソリン価格の高騰や、二酸化炭素の排出に端を発する異常気象のことを考えると、ガソリン車が姿を消すのはそう遠い未来のことではないのではと考えてしまいます。

It may be that electric vehicle would quickly spread in a few years beyond our imagination as cell phone has spread on in the world within decade.

もしかすると、携帯電話が10年もかからないうちに全世界に普及したように、電気自動車は我々の想像以上の速さで普及するかもしれません。

私の会社の上司は郊外に家を持っており、毎朝電車で2時間かけて通勤しています。

As you cannot believe that, that is a not special situation, but some of the businessmen working around Tokyo in Japan take a long time to commute their office every day.

信じられないかもしれませんが、東京に勤めているビジネスマンが毎日長い時間をかけて通勤していることは特別なことではありません。

You may know land price is very high in Japan, and it is extremely higher as it is closer to Tokyo.

日本の土地の価格が非常に高いことはご存知かも知れませんが、それは東京に近づくにつれて極端に高くなっていきます。

The price of land from which it takes 2hr to central Tokyo is about $500,000/m2, 1hr:$100,000/m2, less than 1 hr: it may be beyond my imagination.

東京中心部まで2時間ほどかかる場所の土地価格は約$500,000/m2、1
時間では$1,000,000/m2、1時間未満の場合は私の想像を超えているでしょう。

So if we want to have a big comfortable house while they have a job in Tokyo, we have no choice to live in suburb that is far from office.

そんなわけで、もし東京に仕事がある一方で、大きくて快適な家を求めるであれば、職場から遥か離れた郊外を選択するより他はないのです。

But, most of us live in a small house which is relatively near to our office.

もっとも、ほとんどの人は職場から近い小さな家に住んでいますがね。

Most of people become thinking about buying house when they get married, and have kids. I am the one of them without exception.
たいていの人は、結婚して、子供を授かりると、家を買うことを考え始めます。私も例外なくその一人です。

As I don't know the situation in other countries, the house price is extremely high in Japan, which corresponds to about one fifth of the lifetime earning for most of the salaried employees.
他の国の事情は分かりませんが、日本での住宅の価格は極端に高く、それは大抵のサラリーマンの、生涯年収の５分の１を占めます。

There is a choice to be living in a rent house for their lifetime, but the rent is even not low. The fee for a month would accounts for one fifth of the salary a month.
生涯借家に住むという選択肢もありますが、その家賃すらも安くはありません。一ヶ月の家賃は、一月の給料の５分の１になります。

Of course, it depends on where we live, or how house we live, the house fee is considered very high in Japan.
もちろん、どこに住むか、どんな家に住むかによるのですが、日本では住宅費はとても高いものだと考えられています。

As you know, we Japanese like to study English. There are many English schools in the town, and a lot of books about learning English are mounted in front of the bookstores.

ご存知のとおり、我々日本人は英語を学ぶことが好きです。町には英会話学校があふれ、書店には英語関連の書籍が山積みです。

However, few Japanese can speak English. Compared to other foreigner, it seem we Japanese are week to learn English. As there are several reasons for that, I think the main reasons are as follows:

しかしながら、ほとんどの日本人が英語を話すことが出来ずにいます。他の国の人と比べてみても、我々日本人は英語を学ぶことが不得意であるかのように見えます。それには色々と理由があるでしょうが、主な理由は以下にあるかと思います。

- Grammar
- Pronunciation

Grammar is absolutory different. As you may know, objective is placed at the last in a sentence in Japanese, on the other hand, it placed at beginning in English.

文法が全く異なります。ご存知かもしれませんが、日本語では目的語が文章の中で最後に置かれ、一方英語ではそれは最初に置かれます。

For most of Japanese, it is hard to classify consonant pronounced by native English speaker. Stress is mostly placed on consonant in English, but it is placed on vowel.

ほとんどの日本人にとって、ネイティブが発音する子音を聞き取ることは難しいことです。英語では子音にストレスが置かれることがほとんどですが、日本語では母音に置かれます。

Above explanations are just a side views. I want to tell more details of that in other opportunity.

以上の説明は一側面に過ぎませんが、別の機会に詳しく述べたいと思います。
