英語の世界は広くて、狭い?

英語の世界、広く、狭いなり?

英語の世界は広いから、狭い?

The English language reality is narrow by virtue of its broadness.?

English language reality is narrowed by broadness.

If you insist, the last one is more closer to the Japanese one, I guess.^^

English language reality is narrowed by broadness. だったら,
「英語の世界は広いがゆえに狭い。」なんていかがでしょう?

I was try to say it is narrow in its broadness. I think that's why the first sentence popped into my head first, but by the time I was writing the English, I tried to make it too grammatically clear, and lost what I was trying to say. English now is the biggest language that has ever existed. It's two major constituents are a Germanic root, which is very exact and clear, and a Latin root which is mathematically perfect, although the English reality has never grasped and worked within Latin logic enough for it to be freeing in the way it is for speakers of Italian or Spanish, for example.

English is now absorbing and paying homage to any conceptual or physical word that someone finds logical to introduce into the language. I am studying in Japan now, and I was watching a French movie to fall asleep last night, and it struck somehow, the freedom of being in a smaller reality in terms of self expression.

There way be much more honesty in narrowness in some cases. For example this long reply was a way of talking around something I can't say clearly because I have absorbed too much information that is possibly irrelevant.

それ上に、今日、日本語をしなければいけないが、英語で考えて、質問を答えた。

Ah... that's interesting to think of about English as a language. Unlike Japanese, English is spoken by many nationality, and with various dialect. English itself would contain many meanings while absorbing cultural tendency and the origin of the words. Too much information called "Information overload" will distract you to think more than simplicity and end up in being nothing or difficult to figure out using the language.
If a simple word is used, the meaning would vary person to person. If more precise word is chosen, the variance would be lesser. And the choice of words always are up to you which would be the freedom of choice in writing, I think :)
I hope I get the picture what you meant.

  • 英語の世界は広いから、狭い?
  • 英語の世界は広いから、狭い? // This is closer to what you want to say. You could say "英語の実在性は、その広範囲のおかげで限られている。// By virtue of : ~によって/ ~の理由で/~のおかげで // narrowはlimitの意味の方がいいかも。

Philosophic. =^。。^~

Or, "英語の実在性は、その広範囲が故に狭められている。" "故に"は~の理由でと同じ意味。

Thank you! Is there a way to keep it really simple and still convey the meaning? Like the first sentence I wrote, but correct and understandable?
Jan 21st 2012 17:11 Catwings
Yeah, you can use your own sentence and they still make sense. I think the first one would be closer "英語の世界は広くて狭い (the nuance will be "English is narrow as its language even if it is vast.") If you say "広くて狭い" , the nuance will be "English is vast as well as narrow as its language".

I'm being really difficult today. I am thinking exactly what you said, but also at the same time just about Human emotion, that by having a lot of various knowledge and access to knowledge, as well as having everything we think and say scrutinized and examined by the most number of people, from the most different perspective, our actual true self expression becomes narrow, and words(maybe empty words) become long/broad.
Jan 21st 2012 18:07 Nacho
Does the most simply statement allow for that?
Jan 22nd 2012 08:29 Catwings
Hi Nacho, sorry for my late reply. Yes, you can use the most simply statement since it has a lot of meaning so it never enough to use a long or difficult statement.
Jan 22nd 2012 08:30 Catwings
And it's better to use a simple word like you used in your original statement, which makes readers more think :)

Thank you so much. I never say it, but your energy and kindness is astounding.

英語の本質は、広範囲に及ぶため、かえって絞りずらい。はどうですか?
Jan 21st 2012 18:00 Nacho
Thank you!

tafubafuさんの「英語の世界は広いがゆえに狭い。」の訳が一番いいと思います。他の方のはNachoさんの思いや意図をいろいろ考えて表現されているけれど、たった一言で表現するんだったら「英語の世界は広いがゆえに狭い。」の方がいいかな。

Thank you.
