I don't know the meaning because it isn't my work. But I think it shows Mokichi's conflict. He was suffering for whether he should push the rice cooker button or not, and his finger shook.
By the way, you realized that Mokichi was eating rice in the dark, didn't you?
People who don't eat rice seem not to understand the scene because the sound is rarely heard. On the other hand, Japanese seem to understand it well.
It's interesting difference between cultures, I think!
Yes, that was one of my favorite scenes because it focused on the sound. I also loved the sound effects at the beginning when the crowd was impressed by the electrical appliances.
