呼吸が難しくならせる煙をここに吹かれて、その家事がいくつかの週間続きました。It went on for weeks, the smoke carried here by the wind, making it hard to breathe.
その後、地震がありました。Then, there was an earthquake.
一生の半分の間以上はカリフォルニアに住んでいましたが、バージニアに住む九年の中でこれが始めての地震でした。I lived in California over half my life, but this is the first earthquake of my 9 years in Virginia.
とても小さかったけど人は恐怖になりました。It made people panic even though it was tiny.
でもここの建物は地震に耐えるために建てられないでしょう。But I guess the buildings here aren't made to withstand earthquakes.

今、私がハリケーンの中にいます。Right now, I'm in the middle of a hurricane.
沼地がまだ燃えましたなら、きっと今そうじゃありません。If the swamp was still on fire, surely it's not now.
水着を着て、天気を楽しみに外に行きました　XD　I went out to enjoy the weather in my swimsuit XD;
はい、ちょっと気が変です。Yeah, I'm a bit crazy.
でも嵐が今までとても悪くありません。But so far the storm's not so bad.
後ほど悪くなります。It'll get worse later on.

「so」の意味は「very」を含みますが、soのニュアンスのほうが広いです。The meaning of "so" contains "very", but its nuances are broader.
「very」を使うと、ただありのままの声明みたいな感じです。If you use very, it sounds merely like a statement of fact.
でも「so」は示唆があります。But "so" has implication.
「んだ」を使うみたいだと思います。I think it's like using "んだ".
多くのとき、その示唆が気持ちです。Many times the suggestion is emotion.

A:"The cat is so cute!"（猫がかわいいんだ！）
B:"The roller coaster was so fast!"（ジェットコースターが早いんだ！）

Aの場合には、明らかに誰かがその猫が好きです。For A, obviously someone likes the cat.
Bには、感じることが気分高揚だか怖さだか不明ですが、気持ちがきっとあります。For B, it's unclear whether they're feeling exhilaration or fear, but emotion is there.

「くらい」みたいな文法の役を果たすので、「so」はこう示唆すると思います。I think "so" suggests things in this way because it fulfills a similar grammar role to "くらい".

C: The path was so hot that my feet burned. （小道では足が焼けたくらい暑かったです）
（（昨日日記を添削した人にこれにとってありがとうございます。Thanks to the people who corrected my journal yesterday for this. こんな文法をわかっていませんでした。 I didn't know this kind of grammar.））

この場合には示唆が明白に述べられました。Here the implication is explicitly stated.

このシリーズが好きです。I enjoy the show.
でもその危ないエピソードがまた来ました。But again I came to the deadly episode that broke my laptop last year.
そのエピソードを見てしました。I finished that episode.
で、新しいコンピューターが翌日壊れました。And then, my new laptop broke the next day.
それに今日は見ることからWiiが数回フリーズしました。And today it kept making my Wii freeze.
呪いです．．．！It's a curse...!

私は今別に何も知らないので、ただにcleanとcleanseを説明します。I can't think of anything special, so I'll just explain clean and cleanse.
これはたくさん似ている言葉です。These are very similar words.
cleanもcleanseも「掃除する」です。Both 'to clean' and 'to cleanse' are 掃除する.
でもcleanseのニュアンスはちょっと「清める」です。But the nuance of cleanse is a bit towards purification.

「nano」は科学的記数法で10^-9で、「pico」は10^-12です。In scientific notation, "nano" is 10^-9, and "pico" is 10^-12.
わたしにとって５０００，１００００言の小さい目的はもっともらしいです。For me, a smaller goal of 5000 or 10000 words is more feasible.

日本語でこれについて不確実ですが、英語では言葉の「girl」が関係する年齢の範囲はかなりあいまいです。I'm not sure about in Japanese, but in English the age range that "girl" refers to is rather vague.
時々子供化、時々若い大人です。Sometimes a child, sometimes a younger adult.
私はgirlyさをきっと否認できません！I can't deny my girliness!

あの．．．もう少しで。Er......almost.
こんな寒い天気が早いことに慣れていません。I'm not used to such cold weather so early ^^;
今ほど北に住んだことがありませんでした。I've never lived so far north.
はじめに北緯３３度ぐらいでカリフォルニアに住んでいました（福岡市と同じ）。First I lived in California around 33 degrees N(like Fukuoka).
そして３７度でバージニアに（福島市と同じ）。Then, in Virginia at 37 degrees(like Fukushima).
今は３９．５度です（秋田市と同じ）。And now I'm at 39.5 degrees(like Akita).
本当の冬には、気温の平均が摂氏－７度になります。In the real winter, it'll get to be -7 degrees on average.
Brrrrrrr.　（誰かの冷たい音です）

先日、冬の服を買いました。I got some winter clothes recently.
安楽すぎるので今家で着ている毛羽のコートと手をうまく動かさないほど分厚すぎない手袋ときれいな帽子があります。There's a fuzzy coat I'm wearing inside right now cuz it's too comfy and gloves that aren't so thick that I can't move my hands well and a pretty hat.
しかし！But!
いいブーツを見つけるのはできてしまいました。I couldn't find good boots.
こんな寒い天気でまだサンダルを履きます。I'm still wearing sandals in this cold weather.
すべての店でのブーツが足首までの男のブーツか非実際的な女の流行のブーツでした。All the boots in the store were either men's ankle boots or impractical women's fashion boots.
今度実際の靴店に行くとしました。I should go to an actual shoe store next time.

やせているんで、おなかがかなり卓立でした。Her stomach was quite prominent since she's so thin.
とにかく、今は赤ちゃんがあります。Anyway, now she has a newborn baby.
先週学校から家についたとき彼女のアパートからうるさい音楽が出ていました。Last week when I was getting home from school loud obnoxious music was coming from her apartment.
数分後に誰かが隣のアパートのドアを硬くノックしました。A few minutes later someone knocked loudly on the door next door.
誰も答えて音楽が続いていました。No one answered and the music kept going.
数分後にもまたドアで連打でした。And again a few minutes later more pounding on the door.
まだ答えがありませんでした。Still no answer.
私はウィキペディアで「治安妨害」を引こうとしたとき私のドアでのノックがありました。Just as I was looking up "disturbing the peace" on Wikipedia there was a knock on my own door.
Tada!
元チョー身重な女でした！ It was ex-super-pregnant lady!
「ドアをノックしてるやつ、あんただ？」"Are you knocking on the door?"
「いいえ―」"No--"
「あんたが前で歩いていることを見た。あんたと友達をよく見る。」"Cuz I saw you walking by. I see you and your friend often."
「私たちじゃありませんでした。」"No, it wasn't us.
Ryo: 「おそらく音楽なんてから。」"It's probably from all that music."
「赤ちゃんを寝させる。でもそのノックなんてが起こす！」"It puts the baby to sleep, but all the knocking is waking him up!"
そしてこの女はノックしながら私たちがきっと通っていたことについて続いていました。And she continues to say how we were walking by during the knocking.
なんて無作法でした！WTF, lady?
単に音楽を消しなさいよ！Just turn off your music!

一周ぐらい前猫に薬を付けました。We gave the cat treatment about a week ago.
（まあ、ほかの薬のときがありましたが効果的じゃありませんでした）(Well, there was another treatment but it didn't work)
蚤が猫にありませんけどじゅうたんには．．．There're no fleas on the cat but the carpet is another story.
数文前シリアルを食べていました。A few minutes ago I was eating cereal.
ベッドで座ってコンピューターを使うんで食べ終えるときじゅうたんに鉢をおきます。Since I sit on my bed to use my computer, when I was finish eating I put the bowl on the floor.
明らかに蚤の根絶のこの方法がいちばん効果的です。Apparently this is the most effective method of flea removal.
飲みはもう５つ中に飛んで牛乳で溺死しています。Already five fleas have jumped in and are drowning in milk.

「desert island」の意味は動詞の「desert(見捨てる)」に関すると思います。 I think the meaning of "desert island" is related to the verb "desert".
でもisland（島）がdesert（砂漠）の可能性があると思っていませんでした．．．But I didn't think an island could look like a desert...
私たちは船に乗って灯台がある島に行きました。We got on a boat and went to an island with a lighthouse.
植物は砂漠の植物のようでした。The plants were like desert plants.
私はサボテンも踏みました！I even stepped on a cactus!

船は灯台の島に行く前に貝殻を探しにほかの島に連れて行きました。The boat took us to a different island to look for shells before the lighthouse one.

バージニア州での両親の家に乗りました。We flew to my parents' house in Virginia.
でも、今は私の家族でノースカロライナ州での浜にいます！But now we're at the beach in North Carolina with my family!
そして金曜日には、私とRyoはサウスカロライナ州にいきます。And on Friday, me and Ryo are going to South Carolina.
Ryoの家族はそこにいます。 Ryo's family is there.
彼女は一月に引っ越しました。その時から訪問していません。She moved out in January and hasn't been back since.

でも、金曜日に、インディアナポリスに引っ越したので、新しい身分証明書をもらいに行きました。But, on Friday, since we moved to Indianapolis, we went to get new IDs.
それは郵便に送られます。They're being sent in the mail.
とりあえず、私たちは仮の身分証明書を与えられました。For now, we were given temporary IDs.
プリンターからの一枚の簡単な紙だけです。It's just on a piece of printer paper.
身分証明書という紙はもうだめです。The "ID" has already been useless.
Ryoは昨日それを使って預金を開けなかった。Ryo couldn't open a bank account with it yesterday.
空港に電話してその身分証明書がいいと教えられましたが、まだ気になっています。I called the airport and they said that ID is okay, but I'm not convinced.
空港の警備はアメリカ同時多発テロ事件から物々しくなったんです。Airport security has gotten strict since 9/11.

今日はとても蒸し暑かったです。Today was very hot and humid.
働きながら３４度で、暑さについての政府の警報でした。It was 93 degrees while I was working, and there was a heat advisory warning.
だから今日あまり働きませんでした。So I didn't really work much today.
先月のような霍乱になりたくありません。I don't want to get heat sickness like last month.

「a German small town」を使うのは意味を変えます。Using "a German small town" changes the meaning.
たとえば、もう小さい町について放ていたら、これをいえます。For instance, if you were already talking about small towns, you could say this.
「small」は主な特徴付ける形容詞で、「German」はもっと指定します。"small" is the main defining adjective; "German" further specifies.

「at first」と「first」の意味は副詞として似ていますが含みは違います。 "At first" and "first" are similar as adverbs but have different implications.
「first」は「at first」を含めて「最初」の意味を取り囲むと思います。"First" encompasses the meaning of "最初", including "at first", I think.
でも、「at first」は．．．But, "at first"...
「at first」は後で状況が変える含みがあります。"At first" implies that there is a change in circumstances later on.
"First, I went shopping. Next I went home." （最初に買い物をしました。次に家に帰りました。）
"At first, I thought it was my friend, but when I got closer, I saw it was a stranger." （最初に友達だったと思いましたが、近くなった時、他人だったことを見ました。）

友達のRyoとMasako（とMasakoの夫）と一緒にアパートで生きます。I live with my friends Ryo and Masako (and Masako's husband) in an apartment.
今アルバイトがあって、近くの大学に入りました。I have a job now, and was accepted into a nearby college.
今まで両親から遠く生きることがありませんでした。I'd never lived away from my parents until now.
まあ、大学の始めに、寮に生きていたが、週末に家に変えました。Well, at the beginning of college, I lived in a dorm, but I went home on the weekends.
その時と違って、今度うれしいです。Unlike then, this time I'm happy.
もちろんすべては簡単なんじゃありません。Of course not everything is easy.
（意味を成しますか？「すべては簡単じゃない」じゃなくて、「あるものは簡単じゃない」です）(Does this make sense? It's not "everything is not easy", it's "some things are not easy")
友達からたくさん習います。I'm learning a lot from my friends.
初めて銀行口座を開きました。I got a bank account for the first time.
することはまだたくさんです。There are still a lot of things to do.

キュウリとアボカドとカニカマを使いました。I used cucumber, avocado, and imitation crab.
以前すしを作りたかったことがありましたけど、短粒米を作るのは大変でした。I've wanted to make sushi before, but I had some difficulty making short grain rice.
長粒米の作り方を使いました。I used the same method as for making long grain rice.
効果的じゃありませんでした。It didn't work.
でも昨日、長粒米を作りました。But yesterday, I made long grain rice.
友達は米酢を足したら、長粒米がねばねばになると言いました。My friend said that if you add sushi vinegar, the long grain rice will get sticky.
まあ、ねばねばにならせることは酢か混合か知りませんが、効果的です。Well, I'm not sure if it's the vinegar or the mixing that makes it sticky, but it works.
空前に直径が大きいようにすしを作りました。I accidentally made my sushi very large in diameter.
でもよかったです。But it was good.
両親は嫌いだと思いましたけど、好きでした。I thought my parents wouldn't like it, but they did.
問題はたぶん、両親は生の魚が嫌いなんです。The problem is that my parents don't like raw fish, probably.
昨日までそんなすしだけを食べたことがあります。They've only tried that kind of sushi until yesterday.
早くまたすしを作ると思います。I think I'll make sushi again soon.

書き込みは多くの言語に訳したらいいと思っていました。I thought it would be good if the posts would be translated into many languages.
でも、英語についての私の日記は日本人向けです。But, my journals about English are oriented towards Japanese people.
他の言語を話す人に適切じゃないかも知りません。They might not be relevant to speakers of other languages.
たとえば、「the」を説明するのは日本人にもスペイン語を話す人にも役に立ちます。For example, explaining "the" would be useful to both Japanese and Spanish speakers.
でも違う説明が要られます。But different explanations are needed.
日本語は「the」がなくて、スペイン語は用法が違います。Japanese doesn't have "the", while Spanish uses it differently.
それで、相似な説明がおそらくグループに書き込みますが、たぶん翻訳はよくいりません。So, it's likely that similar explanations will be posted, but translations probably won't be needed often.
（でも、誰かが書き込みを呼んで、他の言語にとって役に立つと思えば、どうぞ！But, if someone reads a post and thinks it'll be useful for another language, go ahead!)

最近日記を読んだような英語の説明のためのグループを作りたいです。I want to make a group for English explanations like what I've written in my journals lately.
英語を教えるためのグループがありますけど、私のグループは参照のように組織的にまとめたいです。There are groups for teaching about English, but I want my group to be organized like a reference.
トピックの要望のためのトピックは一つになります。There will be one topic for topic requests.
すべてのほかのトピックは英語の説明になります。The rest of the topics will be English explanations.

私はいくつかのグループの一員です。I'm a member of a few groups.
でもよく見る問題があります。But there's a problem that I often see.
書き込んだ無関係のトピックがたくさんあるんです。There are a lot of unrelated topics posted.
「こんにちは」や「侵入者です」などを見ます。I see things like "Hello" or "I'm new".
グループの目的から気を散らします。They distract from the group's purpose.
書き込む前にすべてのトピックを賛成されたいです。I want to be able to approve each topic before it's posted.
でもグループを作ったら、選択が三つだけあります。But if you're creating a group, there are only three options.
1. Who can join: Anyone, Post messages: Anyone （加入できる人：誰でも、書き込める人：誰でも）
2. Who can join: Users that administrator approve, Post messages: Anyone　（加入できる人：アドミンが賛成するユーザー、書き込める人：誰でも）
3. Who can join: Users that administrator approve, Post messages: Only group members　（加入できる人：アドミンが賛成するユーザー、書き込める人：アドミンが賛成するユーザー）
この場合なら、１は一番いい選択だと思います。If this is the case, I think 1 is the best option.

無関係のトピックは削除されます。Unrelated topics will be deleted.

英語を話す誰でもトピックを書きこめることがほしいです。I want any English speaker to be able to post a topic.

A red haired boy comes up to me. （赤い髪の男の子は私に来ます。）
1. The boy, who has a book, laughs.
2. The boy who has a book laughs.
3. The boy, who has a book laughs.
4. I like the boy, who has a book.
5. I like the boy who has a book.

１と４の含蓄：赤い髪の男の子＝本を持っている男の子。
1 and 4's implication: red haired boy = boy who has a book
２と５の含蓄：本を持っている男の子＝他の男の子。
2 and 5's implication: boy with a book = another boy
３はあっていません。3 is incorrect.

他の読点の例：
o He said, "I hate you."
x He said "I hate you."
o "I hate you," he said.
x "I hate you." he said. （引用は句点と終わって、その引用を含む文の終わりじゃないと、句点は読点になります。If a quotation ends in a period, and it's not the end of the sentence containing that quotation, the period becomes a comma）
o I bought oranges, bananas and apples. （ある人によってあっています。Correct according to certain people）

英語のはありません。The English ones don't.
比べますと：

それで、英語のを使ったら、後にスペースをタイプしなければいけません。Therefore, when you use the English ones, you have to put a space after them.

だけど頭字語のような除外があります。Though there are exceptions like acronyms.

（しかし、句点は頭字語にとってたいてい任意です）(However, periods are generally optional for acronyms)
