    <title>Rachel Q : Mes parties de la conversation avec mon ami! Aidez-moi, s'il vous plait! (11)</title>

Corrigez les fautes, s'il vous plait! <br />___________________________________________<br />Voici la première partie:<br /><br />Salut, il y a longtemps depuis on a parlé ensemble. Je pense à toi. Ça va?<br />Comment est-ce que ton japonais? Je te souhaite que tout le monde aille très bien!!!<br />Originairement j'ai projeté d'apprendre le français au début de cet année, mais je n'étais pas dans un bon état, je ne voulais pas étudier la moment. L'internet m'a assassiné. T_T....<br />Donc, j'ai décidé d'avoir de la classe de français. Il y a plus de 2 mois depuis mon prémiere classe.<br />J'étais très occupé pendant la période, par consequent je n'est pas apparue en lang-8 souvant. Excuse-moi, pour l'absence.<br />(Et excuse-moi si tu ne peux pas comprendre mes phrases, tu sais...je suis justment une débutante, je ne peux pas éviter les erreurs.)<br />Alors, tu sais bien tout les choses qui m'arrivait. Et toi? Dis moi un peu de toi. <br /><br /><br />------------------------------------------<br />La deuxième partie<br /><br />Merci, je suis bien, mais il y a toujours quelque jours je ne voudrais pas étudier. Ça m'a l'air que je n'apprenne pas le français pour longtemps, comme plus de 2 semaines.<br />J'aurais dû practiquer plus de français orale, mais je n'avoir que apprendre le grammaire ces dernière semaines. <br />(Is it right to say "I have done something" using "avoir + indicatif"? or "avoir + passé", since my teacher has only taught us "plus-que imparfait", I imagine "have done" has something to do with "avoir,être". Please teach me!)<br /><br />Il vaudrait mieux que je vienne par ici souvent, donc je pourrais practiquer que j'apprenais pendant la journée. Salut!!! Is there anyone who speaks French or is good at it? Could you help me translate the following passage? It's the abstract of my linguistic teacher's academic paper, which she wants to publish this week. The problem is that the abstract should be in French. However no one around us could speak French. Could you help me? Merci!!!^^<br /><br />Abstract:  <br />Regarded as a rare pitch pattern, the “double circumflex tone” (DCT) turned out to be fairly common after a countrywide survey of Chinese dialects. This paper pinpoints 29 localities where DCT are found. These localities are distributed in all the major dialect groups except Min. In classifying different pitch contours of the DCT and determining the contrasts among its various types with dipping tones, we discovered a back dipping contour.<br /><br />KEY WORDS: phonetics and phonology, Chinese dialects, tone, double circumflex, back dipping, contouricity<br /><br />(I got the following from google translator.^^)<br />Résumé: Considéré comme un modèle de terrain de rare, la "tonalité double circonflexe" (DCT) s'est avéré être assez commun après une enquête nationale sur les dialectes chinois. Ce document identifie 29 localités où se trouvent DCT. Ces localités sont distribués dans tous les groupes majeurs, sauf le dialecte Min.     <title>Rachel Q : Conversation between my pupil and me^^ (29)</title>

Hi, I said yesterday that my former entry might be my last English entry during my French learning period, but I easily broke this statement today. Haha, sorry~~~<br />I now work part-time as an English tutor. Today after I finished teaching, I thought what if I record his voice and let you hear. <br />I think it would encourage and push him work harder on English when he knows that there are some native speakers or other friends abroad listening to him.<br /><br />But please be nice to him, because I've only taught him for more than a month（only once a week） and before that he can hardly distinguish between "I, me, he, him, his, her, etc". So his English is almost non-existent then, even though he had learned it since kindergarten. (And for this reason, I really hate those teachers who care only his money not his improvement, or those who don't know how to teach languages effectively. I hate traditional language teaching way of overloaded grammar and less practicability.)<br /><br />We are quite nervous, since it's the first time that we have done so. And I felt myself so awkard.(You know, such kind of thing usually happen when you are speaking to someone whose English is at a far different level with you.     <title>Rachel Q : Imagination! The right brain is dancing!!! ↖(^ω^)↗ (13)</title>

Are you a right brain or a left brain thinker?<br />Yesterday, I went to Mozart Concert with my teacher Daisy. It was so great that inspired my imagination considerably.<br />In the first half, I let my mind wandering about. Sometimes I was dancing, sometimes playing water, and more often I was stepping lightheartedly upstairs in a circle. The water was tender, and reflecting the sunshine. I was lying under a willow tree beside the water. The gentle hand of breeze was caressing my face! What a glorious April's day!<br />Later, in the second half, I thought of something different. I began to imagine the colors of the music. At first it was dark green, as the tone went up, it gradually turned into light green. I was lying on the dancing grassland. When green took over my mind, music changed to yellow, and I was sent by the grass to a field of sunflowers. I sat inside a large bright yellow sunflower. We leapt up into the sky step by step. When we arrived at the heaven, the sun was turning red. It became dancing fires, forming a circle around me. The bright red rose up and fell down, down to the floor, colors disappeared, it was black and dark, the music was over!<br />I love the music, the concert, the night, the imagination!!!<br /><br />After the concert, I asked Daisy what she had pictured? --Lines, waves of lines!I can't connect music with objects! I told her what I sighted, she said, "oh, right brain thinker! I'm a typical left brain one. You think the same as 张爱玲(a very famous writer in China) did. She often use colors to describe music." <br />Yes, I do. I like the right brain, which helped me so much in languages acquisition. For example, I can only memorize vocabulary fast(up to 1000 words a day) by picturing them when listening to the sounds. I remembered the texts, passages by visualization. That's so efficient for me! <br />My English used to be really poor in my high school, when I was adopting the traditional left brain way of learning. After attending university, I tried hard to find my way, and started to make use of my right brain. Later, my English rocketed!     <title>Rachel Q : Happy Super Single's Day~ 11/11/11 !!! (22)</title>
      <description><![CDATA[

Is Nov.11 special in your country? It's called "光棍节--Single's Day" in China.<br />Because “1” looks like a rod(棍), which means single in “光棍". And Nov.11 contains the most "1" in a year. <br />Where is special in 2011.11.11? <br />Haaaaaaa, it contains six "1", which is once in one hundred year. So it's "Super Single's Day". By the way, Nov.1st is called "小光棍节little single's day".<br />I remembered that my birthday was 11.11 last year, and 11.1 this year, how pathetic! <br />What would people do this day? <br />Haha, there is a group called "couples go to hell情侣去死去死团", which consists of the singles who are very jealous of the couples. They would wander about in the street, trying to find another single, hug them and curse the couples go to hell. <br />Some may call out a single friend of the opposite sex, so that they can pretend to be couple today, and break up tomorrow!<br />Ah, and some other little "evils" would pose as the other woman to the man for whom she carries a torch, making the couple suffer this day~ (vice versa)<br /><br />(Joking, joking ^^) <br /><br />脱光脱光！！！(脱光 means "to be naked" literally, but "脱离光棍 to get away from the abyss of being single" this day.) Once you have a boyfriend or girlfriend, you can say “哈哈，我脱光了！！！”<br /><br />I would hang out with my teacher to a concert tonight. But we are the same sex, how poor we are!!! ~~~~(>_<)~~~~  <br />哎╮(╯▽╰)╭，什么时候才能“脱光”呢？

Please help me with these questions.<br /><br />1.Which is better, and yours?<br />Original: First, I have Chinese, English, math, music and PE at school. You know, I can get lots of knowledge and learning can make my life more colorful and more interesting. <br />Mine: I have many subjects at school, such as Chinese, English, math, music and PE. With these, I can gain lots of knowledge, and learning can make my life interesting and exciting.<br /><br />2. Original:Second, after school there are a lot of activities I can play.<br />(Can we say "play activities"?)<br />Mine: Second, I always have lots of activities after school.<br /><br />3. Original: Reading books can make my life more interesting and more colorful. Also, I can learn some knowledge. <br />Mine: Reading books can enrich my life, make it more interesting and exciting, and also help me to gain knowledge.<br /><br />4. Original: She is always wearing a smile on her face, but she is strict with our studies. <br />Mine: She always wears a smile on her face, while at the same time she really take our studies seriously.<br /><br />5. What subjects did you do at school last year? (Is it right?)<br /><br />6. Original: I had Chinese, English, math, and PE. They were very interesting, but I like PE best, because it is exciting and relaxing. On(In?) PE class I can play football or(and?) other games. <br />(I feel this sentence to be very unnatural. How do you reword it?)<br /><br />7. Are you a member of a club or societies at school? (shouldn't it be "a club or society/ clubs or societies"?)<br /><br />8. Well, to tell you the truth. My father is the busiest in my family. He is the boss of a big company. He gets up early and returns home late every day. When my father gets home, I usually have fallen asleep. What’s more, he still can’t get a rest on weekends. So my father seldom takes me to parks or cinemas. In fact, I want my father to spare more time with me. He is always so busy.<br /><br />9.     <title>Rachel Q : Spoken English for kids 2 ^ ^ (5)</title>
      <description><![CDATA[

1. Is there anything wrong with the tense here(I don't know, it's just that I was taught long ago to avoid using different tenses within one paragraph. As there aren't tenses in Chinese, I still have some problems with it):<br /><br />> What did the place look like?<br />> It was a lovely place. It's one of the most beautiful places that I have ever been to. The air is fresh. There is not as much traffic as in other big cities. The streets are clean. And I like the people there. They were so friendly. You can taste a lot of different local food. I like the place. I want to go there again in the future.<br /><br />2. In this sentence: It (the trip) can make me relaxed, and it can make my life more colorful and more interesting.<br />I feel it a little redundant to use 2 "it can make" & "more". Can I say "It can make me relaxed, and my life more colorful & interesting"? <br />What is the difference between "more colorful and more interesting" & "more colorful and interesting (if there is such an expression)"?<br />By the way, as I've seen too many "more colorful and more interesting" in this book, I now feel sick about it. Could you give me other English equivalences? The more the better! <br /><br />3. In the following sentence, I felt unnatural when reading, what's your opinion?<br />> How did you go there?<br />> I went there by plane for the first time, so I felt very excited and a little bit nervous.<br /><br />4. We took lots of delicious food and drinks there to have a picnic. (Can I say "for a picnic"?)<br /><br />5. I felt very happy and excited when I went boating in the lake. (Do you have better expressions for "happy and excited"?)<br /><br />6. I enjoyed myself very much during last National Day. (Can I delete "during"?)<br /><br />7. Original: Travelling is a good way to kill the time. I can learn some knowledge. Travelling can make me relaxed. Travelling can make my life more colorful and more interesting. Chinese people(especially netizens) love the English language, so they are keen on making up and using novel English words based on the popular original Chinese words.<br />This time I will introduce three words：Niubility, Zhuangbility, Shability.<br />As 逼 in 牛逼，装逼，and 傻逼 is not polite, I will use "B"(similar pronunciation) to replace it hereafter. (Others may use “× 叉 cha”，like 牛叉or 牛×)<br /><br />Niu: 牛cow-great,awesome,very capable; zhuang-装pretend to be great；sha-傻fool<br />Can you guess what this sentence means?<br />Many people think they are full of niubility, and would like to play zhuangbility, which only reflects their shability.<br /><br />1. Niubility, often spelled as newbility, is a Chinglish noun describing formidability, incredibility or awesomeness. I always write long entries, which seems not so considerate of my friends who need to be very patient to correct them. This time, I will shorten it down. And I'm gonna introduce some popular coined English words by Chinese netizens.<br /><br />First of all, let's talk about "smilence"! It is a combination of smile & silence. It means to smile silently, in Chinese--笑(smile)而不语(while not talk). <br />笑而不语 is often used when netizens reply to the poster to express their unwillingness to say anything. <br />It implys different feelings: <br />1. I'm clear about the topic, I have the answer, I just don't want to tell you. It can be either approval or disapproval. <br />2. I appreciate it with smile. <br />3、I don't agree, but I also don't want to disappoint you. So it's better to keep it to my own. <br />4、I just don't know what to say. <br /><br />For more chances, smilence has sarcastic meanings, intending jokes.<br />Some popular sentences that contains 笑而不语: <br />抚摸楼主狗头,哥/姐 笑而不语。(Caressing your(the poster's) doggy head, I smile, but I'm not gonna tell you anything. 哥&姐 refer to me, myself.)<br /><br />--中国真和谐。（China is "harmonious".） ---Oh! Smilence! (You know what I mean.)<br /> <br />Soon after 笑而不语 became popular in BBS, netizens made up “smilence”, which was spread rapidly later on.<br /><br /><br />There are other coined words:<br /><br />togayther=together+gay=终成眷属 (After fighting for so long, gays finally get together with each other.)<br /><br />Innernet=inner + internet=互联网 (As Chinese netizens can't access many websites abroad, like twitter, facebook, and youtube, the Chinese Internet is just like innernet.)<br /> <br />don’train=don’t+train=动车(dong che) (动力火车 high-speed train, which got an accident recently in Wenzhou.)<br /><br />Democrazy=democracy + crazy=痴心妄想 (Illusion, something that can never come true. It's so crazy to have democracy in China. It's merely an illusion.)<br /><br />Freedamn=freedom + damn=自由 (As China is so "harmonious",  damn the "freedom".)<br /><br />carass=caress+ass 轻拂 菊花 (菊花chrysanthemum is a gay word for ……. You know~ They look alike. Smilence, just imagine.)<br />BTW, can you guess what 轻拂菊花，笑而不语 mean? It's also popular, but……（low & dirty).<br /><br />Ok, stop for now.     <title>Rachel Q : Some moments after the Wenzhou train collision! (27)</title>
      <description><![CDATA[

On 23 July 2011, two high-speed trains collided and derailed in the location of Shuangyu, near Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China. 39 people died and 192 people were hospitalized, including 12 who were severely injured.<br />13 minutes after the collision, the first Weibo (like twitter) message was sent out. It said: Help! Train D301 has derailed, the car is filled with cries of children. Help! Immediately after this weibo, hundreds of thousands of people followed and distributed it, a rescue both online and offline quickly started.<br />Numerous people from all directions gathered and stayed up the whole night and day to save lives. The nearby villagers had rescued more than hundreds of people.<br />Those who had been rescued came back to the train to help other trapped people.<br />At the moment of rescue, they didn’t run off in all directions, each carried one people or two beside them and struggled out orderly. <br />All kinds of cars were used to transport the wounded. And some other residents drove their helicopters to transport and aero photograph. <br />It was this unprofessional rescue team that saved so many lives at the earliest time.<br />On 23, the whole city had a restless night.<br />Half an hour after the first wounded arrived, more than 200 paramedics and 30 experts gathered at 8 different hospitals. 2 hours later, a medical team from Hangzhou arrived.<br />As more and more wounded were transported, the blood banks were out of blood. 10 minutes after this news broadcast, the local residents, volunteers arrived at the blood center immediately. The donating queue even backed up the traffic around the center. As there are too many donators while not enough workers, many of them queued up for the whole night until they donated blood.<br />As many wounded are non-Wenzhounese, they lack accompanies from family members. A few hours later, more than 10 volunteer organizations arrived, with 1000 volunteers more. <br />Hours after the rescuers had been told to stop searching for survivors and had begun cutting apart the wrecked carriages, a 2-year-old girl was found alive in the wreckage. Her parents died in the accident. Calls for father continually came out from the emergency room. After she opened her eyes, taking the nurse as her mother, she said: “ I thought you had left me……”. It is her father’s student who is providing volunteer work for her.<br />On 25, the classmates of a victim lit Kongming lanterns for her. Thousands of Wenzhou residents came to the Wenzhou Century Square, lit candles and released (放飞？) Kongming lanterns, praying for all the victims and the wounded.<br /><br />Peace to all! Hello，this is Rachel. My Chinese name is Chen Ruiqi. I've just graduated from China Agricultural University, and I've passed TEM 8 (Test for English Majors 8). I feel honored to have this chance to introduce myself. <br />  My English is advanced I think. I can speak fluent English, and my pronunciation is good. Well then, it also depends on your judgement. <br />  I can write beautiful Enligsh (I feel embarassed to praise myself here in front of you native speakers, who may find lots of mistakes in my entry. But when you are having an interview, you definitely would praise yourself, right? BTW, it's one of my virtues to be narcissistic. hahaha\(^o^)/~). I occasionally translate for the International Department of my university. And I helped perfect my linguistic teacher's papers. This year, I've been awarded one of the best graduates in Beijing, and my thesis is among one of the best theses in my University. So, I'm fully capable of good  English writing and speaking.<br />  As for a teacher, I am extremely patient and nice. I'm easy-going and very good tempered. I can explain one thing over and over again, and hardly get annoyed. I love children, I love laughing, I'm talktive, so I can always get along with the students well.<br />  Then, I'm very logic, I'd like to have the lessons to be very systematic.<br />As I've self-studied general psychology, educational and cognitive psychology, and psycholinguistics, I've come up with lots of amazing language learning strategies. I used to be very bad at English(which often got the lowest scores among all my subjects when I was in high school). But now, by these strategies, I've made great progress. With the software I applied, I could remember 500-600 words a day.<br />  I'm a very quick learner, I can pick up something brand new within one or two days. For example, in order to help my linguistic teacher draw a dialect tonal map of China, I had to use Arcgis, which I'd never come across before. I studied it for one day, and finally came out with an excellent result, which is even better than the work of an Arcgis(geographic information system) major.<br />  I'm strong in office and photoshop.     <title>Rachel Q : Today, I feel sad~~~~(>_<)~~~~  (25)</title>

Today I read my Japanese friend's journal--日本鬼子 and 小日本. These two words are impolite, but well known in China. For those who dislike Japanese, they often adopt say 小日本 when refering to Japan. Then, there was a Malaysian Chinese adding:<br />【Just for your information, in general Chinese have a word to insult every other races with the word 「鬼」 in there. Not just only Japanese. (^o^)<br />For example:<br />Westerner = 洋鬼<br />Japanese　＝ 日本鬼<br />African = 黒鬼<br />Malay = 馬来鬼 etc.<br />Basically there will be a term for every race you could think of. So try not to take it personally. How do I know? I'm a 華僑... 】<br /><br />He is right, and I explained the 鬼子 thing further more, the following is what I had wrote:<br />【We seldom use these words nowadays, except for some funny effects. 洋鬼子，日本鬼子，黑鬼，(I never heard of 马来鬼 before)etc. were used in the late 19th and early 20th century when China was invaded by the Westerners and Japanese, and was called "the sick man of east Asia东亚病夫". At that time, the Chinese cannot even make a living, how can they not hate those who brought their lives into such conditions. So it can be understood to add 鬼子 after other races.<br /><br />As for 日本鬼子：<br />In Ming dynasty, Chinese called those Japanese who had invaded the east coast of China “倭寇”, later in the Qing dynasty before "Sino-Japan War" in 1895, Japanese asked the Chinese mission about the second line of the couplet.<br /><br />The first line is written by Japanese: <br />骑奇马，张长弓，琴瑟琵琶，八大王，并肩居头上，单戈独战！(denoting that Japanese were strong enough to conquer China)<br /><br />Then the Chinese mission answered:<br />倭委人，袭龙衣，魑魅魍魉，四小鬼，屈膝跪身旁，合手擒拿！(vice versa: China was greater than Japanese)<br />After this couplet, Chinese began to call Japanese 日本鬼子。<br /><br />洋鬼子 is probably due to Chinese people's misunderstanding toward the westerners. Because they had been taught that they were in the center of the world, anything diferent from them were considered weird. You know that the westerners look so much different from Chinese, they had never imagined that a person could look like this, so they connect them with the ghosts. 】<br /><br />After my above message, another people came and wrote:<br /><br />【Hi all, personally, I find the terms 外国人 and 老外 more insulting than ___鬼 words like 鬼佬，etc.<br /><br />The reason for this is that, regarding 鬼 words, everyone throughout history has called each other names and I can accept that as human nature.<br /><br />But I find 外国人 and 老外 particularly insulting, especially when spoken by Chinese migrants about Westerners in Australia where I was born. This is because it implies that they somehow have more of a right to be here than I do. And that makes annoys me intensely. I don't go to China and start calling people there "foreigners", so I don't appreciate it when they come to Australia and call me words which imply that Australia is an extension of the middle kingdom and I've somehow become a foreigner in my own land.<br /><br />In fact, in my whole time on lang-8 I've consistently blocked anyone who refers to Westerners as foreigners. If it's based on nationality, then it's a useful term, for example, if we refer to all visitors to Japan or China as foreigners, regardless of their skin colour, it has its purpose and I find that acceptable. But to say the following is plain stupid: "The other day I went to Akihabara and there were many Chinese and Koreans. There were also many foreigners there so I got a chance to practice my English." This is discriminatory, because it shows an attitude that Westerners are foreigners, and one needn't refer to them using their own country names, but the Chinese and Koreans should be referred to by their country names. In this instance "foreigner" ceases to be a useful term and becomes confusing - and insulting. <br /><br />When I object to Chinese people calling me a foreigner, Josefさん's words, above, are often the response: "no, no.. it is not disrespectul for a chinese to call ...[Westerners foreigners].... because... we have been calling them that for a long time." It's like saying it's acceptable to call women chicks and sheilas (the latter an old Australian expression) simply because many people do. It's just plain wrong!! 】<br /><br />Then I tried to explain the situation of using 外国人 by some Chinese(which might be unappropriate). The following is my response:<br />【hey，sorry if it hurts you when any Chinese call you a foreigner in your own counry. I can understand you, but as a Chinese I know that many Chinese would say so while unaware of you people's feelings. <br /><br />However, I think it's not insulting at all. Because they are not insinuating that they are the owners of your country and you are foreigners. As I did research on English and Chinese languages, I know that the language influence the way we think, and that English speakers and Chinese speakers are apparently adopting different cognitive models. English speakers tend to refer to the ego when thinking, while a Chinese may refer to the static outside world. <br />So in this case when Chinese migrants call Westerners 外国人or 老外 in Australia，they are refering to their motherland--China (as in their cognitive mind the world is static, so they still take themselves living in China in the subconscious mind, even though they were then in Australia)--Therefor, you are a foreigner to the Chinese no matter you are in Australia or China.<br /><br />Before you pointed out, I never awared of the term-外国人 to be insulting. If I have a chance to go abroad, I would be careful about using this word, and tell my friends about your opinions.<br />But please try to understand us on the other hand.<br /><br />Most Chinese people like foreigners, so the expression of 外国人in China is adoring rather than insulting. 】<br /><br />After this message, he immediately blocked me, despite that we had just thanked each other for comments on some other entries. I can't enter his page, read his entris, one of which I had commented not long ago. So we are no more friends. <br /><br />Here is his response to my former message:<br />【"However, I think it's not insulting at all." Rachel Q, it definitely is insulting. As far as I'm concerned, the motive and intentions of the speaker has very little to do with it.<br /><br />I could say "You are a fool" and then say "I was only joking", or "I had no evil intention". But you have the final say whether what I have said is derogatory or not.<br /><br />I hate it when people try to justify the use of 外国人 and 老外. Ιt can never be justified. You are one of many people who have parrotted the same nonsense over and over. Before your above message I had a much higher opinion of you.<br /><br />"So in this case when Chinese migrants call Westerners 外国人or 老外 in Australia，they are refering to their motherland--China" I disagree with you. They are referring to me. And I reserve the right to be called whatever I want.<br /><br />It is always best to refer to people in the way they introduce themselves.<br /><br />For example, a person says the following:<br /><br />Hi, I'm Sally. I'm from America.<br /><br />This immediately tells us two things. She doesn't mind if we call her Sally; she also doesn't mind if we call her American. We now have two alternatives to the word "foreigner", which is great!<br /><br />Of course, someone may introduce him/herself in the following way:<br /><br />Hi, I'm David. I'm a foreigner.<br /><br />Then we definitely know, again, he'd like us to call him "David", and he wants us to refer to him as a foreigner.<br /><br />The interesting thing in all of this is that, in my experience, I've met far more people who introduce themselves in the way that Sally did, than the way David did.<br /><br />I notice on your own profile, Rachel Q, you introduce yourself as "Chinese", not as a "foreigner". I've got some pathetic Chinese learning materials, written by Chinese people, with imagined Westerners introducing themselves as "我是外国人". Why don't you introduce yourself as "foreigner" on your profile for a little while and see how you feel about it...does it or doesn't it suit your identity? 】<br /><br />However I wasn't aware that I had been unfriended at that time and responded:<br /><br />【Actually long before, I had read your debate with another American on this topic, it's rather long, and apparently didn't draw any affirmative result. So I'd rather not to repeat this process here again. <br />But after that time, I think I've been much more sensitive on using "foreigner" whether I agree with you or not. At least, I don't want to hurt others' feelings. And I tried my best to explain it politely in my above comment. See, I'm not debating, it's just an explanation of the situation that Chinese sometimes call westerners "foreigners" even if it's on the western land. <br />OK, I will keep your suggestion in mind, and I won't say "foreigners" as other Chinese may do. But may I suggest you to calm down next time when you hear similar expressions and politely tell them(especially those who can't speak good English) not to say so?   A child told you: "today, i have learnt a new word or a new sentence", which situation is more probable. My teacher ask us to write an essay of 200-300 words on it, using the thoery of modularity and productivity.<br />modularity: 	<br />Component system----module<br />Phonetics is about the production and interpretation of sounds.<br />Phonology studies the organization of raw phonetics in language in general and in individual languages in particular.<br />Domain of morphology---the study of structure within words (syntax) and of sentences<br />Lexicon---- interacting with these modules<br />Semantics----the detailed analysis of literal meaning<br />Discourse----organization of language <br /><br />productivity:<br />Bona fide word---be formed according to morphological and phonological rules.<br />Language can systematically combine the minimal units of meaning (morpheme) into novel words.<br />Sentences can become indefinitely long<br /><br />At first i consider it a chicken-and-egg problem. You can't learn the language until you know the words. But you can't distinguish the words until you know the language.  but later, i prefer to word.<br />reasons: <br />1. we often heard children say enthusiasticly that they learn a word, but rarely a sentence in China.<br />2. the structure, rules and grammer of the sentences can be considered finite, have a given quantity, the children have already learnt it in an early age. but as for words, they are infinite, even if you are 100 years old, there are marvelous words for you to gain.<br />3.though in terms of productivity, the length of a sentence can be infinite, the rules are given, so however different this sentence is, it seems like a sentence without much efort to understand if you know the words. <br /><br />i do not understand modularity and productivity very well, could you expain them and help me to analyse the theme, thanks a lot.<br />
