この日記を見て考えてみましたが、「は」と「が」の違いを説明するのは難しいと気づきました。。

感覚的に、強調したいときは「が」、普通のときは「は」、だと思います。
I think when you want to emphasize word, you can use "が" and when you don"t have to,you can use "は".



例えば、自己紹介のとき「私は山田です」と「私が山田です」どちらを使うか？

普通に自己紹介をするときは「私は山田です」と言います

でも、もし誰かが他の人のことを山田だと勘違いしてしまったら「私が山田です」と主張しなくてはならないでしょう



※細かい日本語の文法は学んでいないので参考の一つにしてみてください

There is no specific rule for when がis used. It's not interchangeable with は, because there are times when you have to use はand times when you have to use が.

For example,

ねこがいます。There is a cat.　がshould be used.
そのねこはかわいいです。That cat is cute. はshould be used.

Basically, as you learn, you just need to memorize what is used with がand what is used with は.
But as a kind of rule, はis used for a statement that is, and がis used for some kind of action or existance, etc.

だれがいきますか。Who is going?
わたしはいきます。I'm going.

But like I said, there's not an easy rule or even a simple way to explain it. You just have to memorize :]
