I will be traveling to Japan in 10 months, so I am preparing language wise. For introducing myself, would I say . . .
(keep in mind I only know katakana and most hiragana, but I am learning more each day)

こにちわ! はじめるわたしわアレシスです。

Would that be a polite method of introduction?

And also, I am very confused. When is it correct to use this ー symbol in katakana?

About the katakana thing, Yaa (やあ) would be ヤー (not ヤア) in katakana, it makes the a i u e o sound longer. This is just an example you would write yaa like this; やあ。 If i were you i would say
はじめまして。 わたし は(wa is written ha when it's a particle)アレシス です。 (よろしく おねがいします。or どうぞ よろしく。 You're not supposed to use spaces I done this to make it easier for you.

Hope this helps.

  • When is it correct to use this ー symbol in katakana? When we say about words come from foreign countries, we use katakana. For instance, bus→バス chocolate→チョコレート guitar →ギター That's why your name also is used in katakana. Clear??

If you have more quesitons, please let me know.
