わたしわ マイケル です。
That's about the extent of what I am able to write at the moment. I can read Hiragana, and most Katakana, and about 16 Kanji. Hoping to make some friends so we can help one another out. My goal is to one day live in Japan. I spent some time there when I was younger and fell in love with the culture and the beauty of the country. I have been wanting to go back for about 16 years now.

こんにちは
こんにちは
わたしは マイケル です。
「こんにちは」&「わたしは・・」is a bit tricky. In Japanese, when you say 「わたしは」, it is pronounced as watashiwa, but the second wa is writtten as は. This 「は」 is a part of speech called 助詞(joshi-postpositional particle).
「こんにちは」 came from an old greeting of 「こんにちは、よいおひよりで(Today is a good day)」, and「 は」 in 「こんにちは」 is also a 助詞. Therefore, it is written with 「は」instead of 「わ」.
I am sorry. I know this is very difficult for a new learner, but it is the most and only tricky part of Hiragana. So don't worry too much about it and I hope you don't get discouraged. We Japanese here will help you as much as we can!

Japanese writing is somehow tricky.
But you are lucky. Now Japanese changed many writing to adapt the spelling to the pronunciation several decades ago.
For example, てふ(choh), せう(show), づつ(zutsu) in the old spelling.
