My Wavering Mind

PUBLIC_FLAG_#{@journal.pf_int} RSS feed of Roomy's latest journal entries Apr 02nd 2010 02:00 April Fool's Day Roomy
It's been almost five months since I joined this site.
The interval of time between my journal entries has been getting longer these days.
This is not because I'm too busy now, still less because I feel short on ideas for my entries.

In fact, I have a little too many ideas that I just can't put them into action (It's not so easy to get a splendid idea into shape as an English entry).

I'm planning to write some new entries about the Japanese language, such as "the difference between the two particles: は and が" and "how are we making up for the absence of personal pronouns in Japanese expressions?" (Maybe these titles will be changed).

Meanwhile, I sometimes think I may as well write lighter topics to give variety to my journal, and so I'm of two minds as to which to choose.
My mind is as wavering as the wind.

Just a thought. How about posting an entry with a playful mind to celebrate April Fool's Day, like "Wow, I won 100 million yen!" or "I was selected as the winner of Miss Japan?"
I scrapped these ideas because they would surely be mocked as bad jokes. X(

This time I took the easy way out with this short entry. Sorry if this let you down!

  • This is not because I'm too busy now, still less because I feel short on ideas for my entries.
  • This is not because I'm too busy now, even less because I'm short on ideas for my entries. (This sounds more natural. ^_^)

  • In fact, I have a few too many ideas that I just can't put them into action (It's not so easy to get a splendid idea and shape it into an English entry). (The last sentence needs a little rephrasing, I hope I changed it to still mean what you meant!)

I laughed at your April Fool's Joke idea. :D
I think it would have been funny!

Your English is so amazing~! And very natural, too! I have the same problem with journal entry ideas. ^_^;; A lot of times, they sound good until I start trying to write them!
Apr 02nd 2010 03:30 Brian

Well, if you're the person on the photo you've got, then I'd have belived you if you'd be Miss Japan, honestly xD

And don't worry, I'm still a fan of your entrees :3
Maybe you can write sometimes about something you'd like to know from other people, or may ask other people a question.

You've enough time to choose, and noone will die if you take a lot time to think about a good idea for a entree.

So don't worry :3
Apr 02nd 2010 03:39

Hi Roomy,

I believe this topic is really helpful for me.
It is because your splendid writing skill is valuable to read.
I want to read more text which you wrote.
Thank you for posting this!:D
Apr 02nd 2010 03:53 jcddvm

Your English is excellent!

I understand your predicament. Maybe you could set a goal to write one or two items per week... then anything in excess of your goal would be a pleasant bonus!
Apr 02nd 2010 04:00 Terry

You don't always have to teach us stuff. Just write whatever you want, Roomy先生 :)

Hi レベッカさん,

I'm so happy to receive your comment at last!
Also, I appreciate your corrections!

I know you have a lot of fascinating ideas.
Your writing style is also charming!
Wish I could write as cutely as you write in your entries. :D
Apr 02nd 2010 09:33 Roomy

Hi Brian,

Wow, you kidding!
But I take your compliment half-seriously. xD

I'm so glad to know you are a fan of my entries.
Thank you for the encouragement. :)
Apr 02nd 2010 09:34 Roomy

Hi pinky,

Oh really?
It would be so nice if my entry could be of some help to you!
I'm curious what you'll talk about.
Looking forward to reading your next entry.:)
Apr 02nd 2010 09:36 Roomy

Hi jcddvm,

I'm so relieved to know you understand my predicament.
I've been obsessing for so long, but I'm okay now.
Thank you, Jason! :)
Apr 02nd 2010 09:37 Roomy

Hi Terry,

It's reassuring to know that!
Actually, I'm a kitten rather than a teacher. :D
Apr 02nd 2010 09:38 Roomy

Hi arekusu,

Thank you so much for correcting my mistakes!
Your advice is as helpful as always. :)
Apr 02nd 2010 09:39 Roomy

Hi Kaiya,

Thanks for your correction.
I'm glad you took a look at my post. :)
Apr 02nd 2010 11:40 arekkusu

If you're looking for a change, why not present an audio entry?
Apr 02nd 2010 12:15 Roomy

Change? I'm not looking for a change. My goal in Lang-8 is to improve my writing skill so that I'll be able to write convincing articles. At the same time, I hope I can make myself useful to those who study the language and culture of Japan.

Hi (สวัสดีครับ), Roomy(รูมิ) San!! How are you today??

I think you can write the journals that you'd like to...
I wanna read your variety of life, such as your university life, about your best friends or family..(up to you!!)

Anyway, thank you for your (quite) every day corrections...ขอบคุณครับ ^_^
Apr 02nd 2010 12:55 010

Hi Rommy:

If you write "I was selected as the winner of Miss Japan" on the Lang-8 , I will believe that is true.

>。<
Apr 02nd 2010 13:02 Terry

hahaha! 僕もそうだと思いますよ!:)
Apr 02nd 2010 15:37 twi

Whatever your topic is to be, I always enjoy reading your post :-)
Apr 02nd 2010 16:16 James

I still can't believe how natural the English is. You are unusually perceptive about linguistic features such as idioms and grammar. Perhaps you are a genius, or have done very intensive language study. It is likely some combination of those two factors. Maybe you should write an entry about language learning!

I still enjoy reading your entries! I always thought it was amazing of you to write these in-depth, instructive entries. Likewise, if you ever want to take a break from those, it'd be great to read about other aspects of your life as well. ^_^
Apr 02nd 2010 19:32 Roomy

Hi ジャックさん,

I'm pretty fine, thank you!

I'm so relieved to know most of my friends want me to write what I really want to.
My entries are going to talk about more or less informative topics.
ขอบคุณ มากค่ะ

Hi 010 (Elaine-san),

Ha-ha, I'd be embarrassed if you'll take it seriously. xD
Anyway, April Fool's Day is over now.

Terry,

本当?もうエープリルフールは終わったんだよ(笑)

twi-san,

Thank you for your comment! I'm happy to know that. :)

James,

Thank you so much for the compliment!
Actually, I don't think I'm a genius, but I just love studying languages.
To have my cake and eat it too, I've written (and I'll write) English articles about the Japanese language. :)

OrangeX3,

Thank you for your corrections!
I wrote "How about posting ~ ?" because I intended to write as if I were asking myself the questions.
Anyway, I think "What if I ~ " sounds much better, so I appreciate your suggestion. :)
Apr 02nd 2010 20:10 Brian

Hey Roomy,

I hope you take it seriously ;-)
Don't worry, no need to thank you, just be proud of yourself because you're so cool, that's why you've a fan (fans^^) ; >

こんにちは Roomyさん、
あなたはかっこいいですねxD
いえいえ、私はありがとうにあなたです^^

This post was without a Japanese book, so yeah, may just a few words, but much msitakes ^^

Next post will be Japanese only ;D
Apr 02nd 2010 21:19 Roomy

How flattering you are, Brian!
Thanks. I'm a bit embarrassed to hear you say so.
If there were a fan club for me, you could be the first member. xD

You did a good job with your Japanese comment except one mistake.
私はありがとうにあなたです^^ should be 私はあなたにありがとうと言いたいです^^
That was so close.
I'm looking forward to your next Japanese comment. :)
Apr 02nd 2010 22:30 Brian

next comment will be in Japanese sorry for that.

So, now I'm the first member of your fanclub ;D

Hope you're not too embrassed ;-)

And thanks for your corrections~

またね~^^
Apr 02nd 2010 23:21 ~♥Nacchi♥~

Aww! That's so sweet of you to say. ^__^
In English, writing in a cute way ... I don't think it can be done. That's one of the reasons I've enjoyed studying Japanese so much, I can communicate in a way that I can't in any other language I've studied. :D That's also why I've taken on a very feminine speech/writing style in Japanese, because there is no feminine speech in English.
The way you write sounds very intelligent, though. ^_^ If you read an average American's English blog or something, I don't think it would sound so articulate. It actually reminds me a lot of the way I write/speak in English. ^▽^ I've been told by the way I write/speak is very European !
Apr 03rd 2010 04:44 Terry

Apr 03rd 2010 07:29

Thank you Roomy,
You're the only person who waits my entry.:) haha
I think you are so good at using prepositions, I focus on the usages of them.
Using proper prepositions is the most difficult and important part of studying English, isn't it?
Apr 03rd 2010 09:13 Roomy

Brian,

I wrote "fan club for me" simply as a joke. xD
When you (probably) took it half seriously, I thought my heart would stop.
Anyway, I don't think badly of you. You have a sense of humor!

I'm looking forward to your Japanese comment.
待ってるからね!:)

レベッカさん,

I think so too!
I asked a lot of native English speakers whether there are feminine ways of speech in English, but I received basically the same negative answers: No!
I've heard of a few languages that distinguish feminine and masculine ways of speech in terms of grammatical rules, but Japanese doesn't have such rules. In fact, we express the difference between female speech and male speech by means of various ways of speech, as if we were dressing ourselves in variety of clothes.
I think your style of writing is cute and lovable. I wish I could write as cutely as you do. <3

Terry,

違うの!
Brian はエープリルフールを1日間違えたみたい!

会員が100人集まるならファンクラブあってもいいけど(笑)

pinky,

You're welcome!
I don't think I'm the only person, but your friends on lang-8 seems to be too busy.
I feel the same way as you do. It's not easy for me to use English prepositions correctly.
The opposite is true. Learners of Japanese have a problem in using Japanese particles, especially は and が. I will write an article about this issue at some early date.
Apr 03rd 2010 10:52 Terry

本当のファンクラブを作ったんだな!!気が付かなかった。(笑)
You hear that guys?? Only 98 more to go! Brianさん can be president, but I want to be VP :)

Thank you for your corrections, melitu!
I didn't know I could put "I post" directly after "how about."
It's a good lesson for me!

I'm going to sometimes write about light topics as just another girl does in her journal, while I basically focus on informative articles concerning the Japanese language and culture. :)

Hi Roomy,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you are the winner of Miss Japan, right?
Hahaha, Sorry about the joke. Enough about that, I've been inspired to studying ENG hard by the Journal of yours. I'll be counting on you; Roomy teacher. :-)

Apr 04th 2010 03:04 Brian

@Terry, Yup, I've to respect the will of Roomy because of the fan-club
Anyway it was a joke ;)

A fanclub of a person, reminds me to the Japanese Baseball XD
Apr 04th 2010 07:25 Roomy

@hide

Do you really think so? I'm curious about that! xD
Your English is excellent. Also, I think you're popular with girls.

@Brian

Hey, did you forget the promise that you comment in Japanese? xD
I wonder if baseball is popular among European boys.

いいえ、野球はヨーロッパでは人気がないと思います。
サッカーとひょうきゅう(?)がスイスではとても好評です~
それに、私のスポーツは日本語の勉強です (^^;)

Dear me... what is ひょうきゅう? Tennis or golf?
Apr 06th 2010 06:36 Terry

I'm definitely going to say あっという間に in my next journal! haha awesome!!!! :)

(Lit - "in the time it took to say ah") -- you could do a post on idioms! I kind of want to get a book of Japanese idioms now. In English you could say, "in the blink of an eye" I guess.
Apr 06th 2010 08:46 Roomy

Yeah, あっという間に is a really useful expression you can frequently use it, like あっという間に日記を書いたら、あっという間にコメントが付いた. xD

"in the blink of an eye" might be better, but I wanted to use the phrase "in a puff of smoke." :)
Apr 07th 2010 05:01 Brian

Hey Roomy,

I'm stressed right now, don't really have a lot time and the nerves to use my brain T_T
Thanks for your corrections!! You're really a great teacher :-)

""Dear me... what is ひょうきゅう? Tennis or golf? ""
Here I was talking about Icehockey, found this word somewhere (^^ ')

See you soon : )

@ Terry

はい、私が勉強はがんばります~^^
Apr 07th 2010 09:25 Roomy

Oh, my... poor Brian!
Maybe you need someone who can comfort your mind. :)

Ice hockey is アイスホッケー in Japanese.
Do you play any sports?
Apr 07th 2010 22:14 Brian

Yeah, cause I've my birthday today, I feel kinda better than normally, still next day will be bad again XD

Hum, near my house it has a small forest, sometimes I go running there for myself, its nice. I like sports, but I don't really do them ... xD

See you & Hope you're fine :)
Apr 08th 2010 00:27 Roomy

Really? Happy birthday, Brian! :D
So, you are 18 years old now?

Running in nature is good for your health.
I like jogging, but recently I prefer walking and stretching.
Apr 09th 2010 16:58 Brian

Thanks so much for your congratulations :-)
Yup I'm 18 years old now, an adult in my country ....^^
But you can still call me "chan", it's cute :P

Yeah, to be in the nature is very important for me, that's why I really enjoy the nature, I'm a big friends of nature and animals.
Walking is too booring for me, I need to really work and swet, so when I come home I can feel the work I did xD
stretching would be not a bad idea if I'd do the same ;)

See you~
Apr 10th 2010 04:35 Terry

「ちゃん」は、男の人と呼ぶためにも使える?女の人だけだったと思ったけど・・・
Apr 10th 2010 09:10 Roomy

@Brian

Okay, then I'll call you Brian-chan all the time. xD

Is walking too boring for you? In Japan, walking is one of the most highly regarded sports, because it helps your body take up oxygen, improves your metabolism and the circulation of the blood without putting any strains on your heart.
I'm doing stretching exercises to keep my body in good shape. I'm also interested in yoga and belly dancing, :D

@Terry

When you refer to children, you can use ちゃん regardless of gender. ちゃん can also be used to affectionately call someone among close friends regardless of age.
Apr 10th 2010 11:12 dryplace

Roomy, I think any kind of topics is welcomed by the people here. You can just read newspaper to see if you can come up with some particular topics. e.g. the impression of the fact that recently several Japanese were executed capital punishment in China, the comparison of AKB48 and Morning Musume in Japan, etc. There are a few Japanese newspaper companies that provide online materials in the Internet.
Apr 10th 2010 11:53 Roomy

Long time no see, dryplace!

I know about the news. I think drug smuggling is very bad, but the Chinese law took the matter to extremes. Japan also has capital punishment, but drug smuggling can only be punished by up to life imprisonment.
The comparison of AKB48 and Morning Musume in Japan would be your favorite topic, I guess. Boys know much more about that kind of topic than girls do. I want to know who your female artist is or what your most favorite idol group is. :)

II'll soon post my new entry about Standards of Beauty.
Apr 10th 2010 16:20 neicy

yeah! I know I will like that topic! There are so things you could write about with this topic, I wonder what you'll say!! Well, I'm excited!!! I can't wait to read it.

oh, I didn't know you like belly dance! I love it!! I have been practicing for a while now and I hope I can get good enough to take it as a serious sport and compete.

good luck with your wirting. I hope to be the first one to correct your entry!! n_n
Apr 10th 2010 17:29 Brian

Oh I see... well Japanese people are just healty xD
Nah, I like to run, it just makes me feel free, and after that I'm everytime very hungry and then I sleep like a baby :3
yoga and belly dancing? Well I guess belly dancing is nothing for me XD
But how's yoga, never tried it, or informed myself about it?

Greets~
Apr 10th 2010 19:36 Roomy

@neicy

I'm glad you are so curious about my next entry. n_n
Standards of Beauty is going to be kind of serious rather than exciting or amusing. There will be no popular idols coming up in the topic, but I'll refer to a famous Japanese actress somewhere in the entry.

I haven't even started practicing belly dance, but I'm studying it while watching videos. Are you practicing belly dance? How about choosing belly dance as the topic of your next entry? Its title would be Lenise Belly Dance Lessons For You. :D

@Brian-chan

Yeah, I think Japanese are people most concerned about their health.
That would be one of the reasons why they have the lowest percentage of obesity in developed countries.
Why don't you try yoga? I'm pretty sure it will help you maintain a healthy condition. :)
Apr 11th 2010 10:50 neicy

I am suprised by how many people enjoy belly dance. it is either growing in popularity or has always been popular. I try to wait untill what's 'in' (or the current trend trend) dies down. I hate things that are over-rated (or over popularised).

In any case, I have thought about writing an entry like that. I shall do it!! Thank you for suggesting it.

but a long time ago I read one of your comments to another person that said that we shouldn't confuse our readers by changing genres, and I agreed. So I think I will have to put it on my interesting journals group. The only problem is that I'm kinda worried that noone will comment. I guss that's okay...as long as I know people are reading it.

Thank you Rumi-chan!! Ideas are already runing through my mind..yaaay n_n
Apr 11th 2010 10:52 neicy

oh, sorry I forgot to mention, yes I have practiced belly dancing for almost a year now, but I am only starting to take it seriously. I gusse I can talk about this in my entry. ^_- please look forward to it!!!
Apr 11th 2010 12:12 Roomy

I'm sorry if I confused you by my suggestion, Lenise!
I just thought you were seeking for the topic.
Of course, you can write anything you want anytime.

You need not be worried that no one will comment on your entry.
I know you've gained new fans of your journal.
When there's no comment on your entry, I'll surely take care of it, haha! xD
Apr 23rd 2010 00:28 dryplace

Roomy, my favourite Japanese artists.
AKB -- 高橋みなみ、高城亜樹、仲川遙香、板野友美、柏木由紀
モー娘 -- 道重さゆみ、田中れいな
Others -- Roomy、石原さとみ、真野恵里菜

Recently I went to a bookstore which sold old Japanese books and magazines. I found one called Kindai. It does not produce any new copy for this magazine already. I have totally bought 7 copies of this magazine. :P
Apr 23rd 2010 07:09 Roomy

Thank you, dryplace!
You really like pretty girls. I appreciate you letting me know your types, especially including me! xD

Kindai is no longer being published. It's really sad that good magazines ceased their publications.
Apr 23rd 2010 09:27 dryplace

Actually the flow is like this. Some time ago a friend in facebook told me that she liked Morning Musume. Hence, I tried to search those information in the Internet. Later someone in the Internet told me that AKB may be better than Morning Musume. Once I walked around an old bookshop and found a book (Kindai) with Morning Musume as cover. I bought it and knew 石原さとみ. 真野恵里菜 is from Hello Project (the company who manages Morning Musume) also.
Apr 23rd 2010 12:04 Roomy

Morning Musume (they're called 早安少女組, right?) made its major debut more than 10 years ago and had overwhelming popularity, but since then, they have been slowly losing their popularity with frequent changes in their lineup. AKB48 are very popular among so-called otaku guys hanging out in Akihabara, and they look like a group of ordinary girls. I prefer Morning Musume to AKB48 (I'm no homo though :) I admit they or other female idols like 石原さとみ and 真野恵里菜 look pretty, but I suggest you avoid talking about them as your types to Japanese girls except me, because they might think of you as kimoi otaku from jealousy (of course I know you aren't it though). That's the way girls are. :)
Apr 23rd 2010 23:33 dryplace

I guess you mean AKB48 looks like a group of ordinary girls. You may say that. However, usually it is just commercial packaging makes other singers and artists feel better. I find some popular singers or artists with poor appearance. In the same way, in my mind, Roomy is also a Japanese star. She is even better than others since she replies my messages. For other stars, they will not reply any comments leaving on their blogs.
Apr 24th 2010 08:35 Roomy

I think most stars are too busy to reply the comments from their fans or the talent agencies forbid them to do it. Anyway, even an ordinary girl might not always be kind enough to reply the comment or message from a guy unless she is fond of him. There are girls and girls. It's not judged by their appearance. It would be best if a girl is pretty and warmhearted at the same time.
Anyhoo, I'm not a star at all! xD

Roomy, recently I have watched several AKBINGO and AKB週刊. They are quite interesting. I also know that there is a book with photos of AKB members. For some of them, they are just wearing underwear. It seems not very good. I can now understand why people who like AKB may be regarded as kimoi otaku. Some people in Hong Kong are mad about AKB. For some rare photos, some can pay as expensive as 10,000yen for six.

Oh, really. I believe you're not a kimoi otaku, ha-ha. :D

Hey Roomy,
I know what you mean. I have a lot of interests and ideas, but it's really hard for me to express them in japanese...especially since I don't really like writing about mundane things like "Today I ate waffles!" or something. I often get stuck and then scrap a whole idea, just because I can't put it into words. But I guess if I keep trying regularly I'll some day achieve fluency and be able to let my ideas blossom, even in Japanese.
がんばらないとね!

PS: I would love to read your entry about the lack of personal pronouns in Japanese, since it's a topic I often think about myself.

Thank you, Drej! I'm glad you could understand what I meant.
I used to write cheesy things typical of just another girl in my diary (not on Lang-8), but I changed the direction of writing after I joined this site. I found out how exciting it was that I not only received the kind helps of people all over the world, but also savored the joy of being appreciated by them. I'm going to keep on writing what I really want to read. :)

  • It's been almost five months since I joined this site.
  • It's been almost five months since I joined this site. [This is correct as is]

  • The interval of time between my journal entries has been getting longer these days.
  • The interval of time between my journal entries has been getting longer lately.

  • In fact, I have a little too many ideas that I just can't put them into action (It's not so easy to get a splendid idea into shape as an English entry).
  • In fact, I have a few too many ideas that I just can't pull together for an entry(it's not so easy to get a splendid idea into shape as an English entry). [If an entire, independent sentence is in parentheses, the first letter is capitalized. If it's a comment within another sentence, the first letter is not capitalized.]

  • Meanwhile, I sometimes think I may as well write lighter topics to give variety to my journal, and so I'm of two minds as to which to choose.
  • Meanwhile, I sometimes wonder whether I should write about lighter topics to give some variety to my journal, and so I'm of two minds as to which to choose. [I don't think the last part needs any changes.]

  • My mind is as wavering as the wind.
  • My mind is as fickle as the wind.

  • How about posting an entry with a playful mind to celebrate April Fool's Day, like "Wow, I won 100 million yen!" or "I was selected as the winner of Miss Japan?"
  • How about posting anplayful entry with a playful mind to celebrate April Fool's Day, like "Wow, I won a 100 million yen!" or "I was selected as the winner of the Miss Japan contest?"?

  • I scrapped these ideas because they would surely be mocked as bad jokes.
  • I scrapped these ideas because they would surely be mocked as bad jokes. [I think the original "mocked" is fine, although I agree that you're unlikely to be mocked on Lang-8.]

  • This time I took the easy way out with this short entry.

Thank you for your corrections, Vincent-san!
I'm relieved to know that I'm unlikely to be mocked on Lang-8. :D
