I went to a bookstore today and found the poster advertising in the store which said "July 10 is the Anniversary of Natto."
私は今日ある本屋に行き、店内で「7月10日は納豆の日」と書かれた宣伝ポスターを見つけました。

I had never heard such an anniversary day before.
私はそんな記念日を聞いたことがありませんでした。

I guess that was labored anniversary day which was planned by Natto manufacturers; that is to say, "July 10"="7.10" is pronounced "nana-tou" in Japanese and it is similar to the pronunciation "Natto".
おそらく、その記念日は納豆製造業者が計画したこじつけの記念日だと思います。つまり、「7月10日」=「7.10」は日本語で「なな、とう」と発音されますが、この発音は「納豆(なっとう)」に似ているのです。

Therefore I ate Natto on my dinner of today in commemoration of the labored anniversary day (LOL).
そこで、私は今日の晩御飯に、こじつけの記念日を祝って(笑)納豆を食べました。

As you may know, Natto is one of the famous Japanese food, but it's true that Natto is disliked many foreign people due to the uniquely taste and smell.
ご存知かもしれませんが、納豆は有名な日本食の一つですが、その独特の味と香りが多くの外国人に嫌われているのも事実です。

However I like Natto very much no matter how many people dislike it.
でも、たとえどんなに大勢の人が嫌っても、私は納豆が大好きです。

Labored anniversary day is not something we would say in English, although it's not incorrect. We would probably just refer to it as a holiday, even if we're working on that holiday.

Thank you for your corrections and comment.
I didn't know the meaning of word "labored anniversary day" in English. I think the same word including my diary entry above is probably different from the word recognized by native English speakers.
It's difficult for me to select the words which make natives no confusion.

Anyway, your comment is very important for me. Thank you again. (^ ^)

  • I went to a bookstore today and found a poster advertising in the store which said "July 10 is the Anniversary of Natto." >"a poster advertising" is a little odd. You could just say "an advertisement", but I think "a poster" expresses the idea simply.

  • I guess that this is a bogus anniversary day created by Natto manufacturers; that is to say, "July 10"="7.10" is pronounced "nana-tou" in Japanese and it is similar to the pronunciation "Natto". >this is the only way I can think of to express こじつけhere. It is true that "labored" is one English meaning of the word, but it doesn't work here.

Thank you for your corrections and comment.
In addition, I'm sorry I respond to you lately.
I didn't know the word "bogus" as the translation of the word "こじつけの".
It's very useful knowledge for me. (^ ^)

I don't think that "bogus" really conveys the meaning of こじつけの, but perhaps its feeling is similar in this sentence.
