Electricity is Like Air

As you may know, the nuclear power plants in Fukushima prefecture were broken due to the big earthquake occurred last Friday.

そのために、現在、東京を含む関東地方では電力が不足しています。

Therefore I'm trying to the save on electricity now.

I had stopped the air heating and air cleaner in my room, I stopped to use the washing machine and began to wash my clothes by hands.

When I began to do such energy saving life, I have been feeling the preciousness of electric.

I think the electricity is like the air, because we realize for the first time how important there are in our life.

That is causing [[or "That is the cause of"]] the current [[or "present"]] shortage of electricity in the Kanto region including Tokyo. [["Now" at the end of the predicate makes the sentence construction awkward. It is more natural to include this with the subject as suggested above.]]
The Japanese government appealed to the people living in Japan to save on electricity.
Therefore I'm trying to the save on electricity now. [[You may consider "Therefore I'm trying to conserve electricity now."]]
I had stopped using the heater and air purifier in my room; I also stopped using the washing machine and began to wash my clothes by hand. [[Although this is actually two separate sentences, because the ideas are related you can combine them with a semicolon ( ; ). Another way to write this would be to make two full sentences: "I stopped using the heater and air purifier in my room. I also stopped using the washing machine and began washing my clothes by hand."]]
After I began such an energy-saving life, I have since realized the preciousness of electricity. [[A natural and conversational way to phrase this would be, "I have since realized just how vital electricity really is."]]
I think that electricity is like the air, because we realize (now) for the first time how important they are in our lives. [["Our" is plural, so "lives" is plural.]]

When I began to do things to save energy, I realized the preciousness of electricity. [As I began doing things to save energy in my life, I realized how precious electricity is.]
So many things are run by electrcity in our lives, from our refrigerators to traffic lights.
I hope that we can find new ways to make energy such as using power from water, wind and the sun.

They must be inexhaustible and probably are safer and cleaner than the current energy source such as oil, nuclear power, and so on.
