I know a college student who came to the U.S. as an athletic scholarship recipient. This is no exaggeration: he could not make one simple English sentence. All he knew was “Hello,” “Thank you,” and “My name is…” But after only a few months, he was able to communicate all basic thoughts, and speak very well. One key method was: memorization of very simple paragraphs. Although you might forget the paragraphs later, key phrases will remain like a habit. Habitual speaking is necessary to become fluent in a foreign language. The reason I know his situation so well is that I was his ESL teacher. Please keep up the good work.

運動の奨学金を得った留学生を知っています。これは誇張ではないですが、彼は初めは、一つの簡単な文を話せなかったのです。ただ、「こんにちは」とか、「ありがとう」とか、「僕の名前はｘと申します」のぐらいしか話せませんでした。でも、何ヶ月のあと、彼は大部分の普通の考えは全部話せることになりました。一つの重要な勉強の方法はこれでした。簡単な段落を暗記すること。時間が取った後、暗記した段落は大部分忘れてしまうかもしれないけど、重要な句は普通、習慣のみたいに頭に残ることです。外国語にぺらぺらになるためにはいろんな句が習慣のみたいに残るのが必要だと思います。彼の事態を良く分かっている理由は私が彼の英語の先生だったからです。頑張ってください。
