ahrum : a paper on religion (0)

Religion, Painkiller or Pain-maker?

There is a time when people feel that they need to believe in God. In the Korean movie, Secret Sunshine(Milyang), Sin-ae has such a difficult time after her husband passes away and her son is abducted in the city, Milyang where she and her son plan to start a new life. After the terrible events, she loses her control and finds something she can depend. Even though she becomes an adherent of Christianity and goes to Church on a regular basis, she begins to defy God when she encounters the murderer of her son. The murderer confesses that he is a Christian and is forgiven by God. She cannot say anything because she feels the he is so impudent and does not seem to be regretful of his crime. Although Sin-ae is consoled by Christianity in the beginning, Christianity plunges her into deep depression in the end. Religion can be a painkiller or a pain-maker because it has not only positive functions but also negative functions.

Religion can be a painkiller because religion helps people to go through their crisis. A lot of religious people become religious when they have a hard time. When they are broke due to the bankruptcy of their company or when they are physically or mentally hurt, they turn to be desperate about their life. They may feel so much pain that they want to avoid the reality, even thinking of committing suicide. They need a painkiller which can release their pain and can arrive at the conclusion that the most ultimate painkiller is religion. Since they are too weak and likely to be swept by even trivial accidents, they expect God or religious faith to make them forget about the painful reality. For example, the Buddha told us, "Human life is suffering" and it means we are not the only persons who suffer. If we believe in Buddhism, we can feel that suffering is a natural process and can avoid falling into depression.

In addition, religion offers rules and guidance on seeking happiness. As human beings, we all seek for a high level of happiness, not being satisfied with only eating and sleeping. According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs models, there are five levels of needs: physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging, esteem and self-actualization. These needs are represented as a pyramid. Maslow suggests that people begin to desire higher needs when their basic needs are met. Physiological needs are regarded as the most basic needs and take up the lowest part in the pyramid. In contrast, self-actualization which occupies the highest part is to realize a person's potential and religion can be an element in this level of needs. All religions have their own definition of happiness so they can give many ways to meet self-actualization. For instance, Christianity gives ways to be happy including regarding every event as thankful and reducing anxiety by prayer. On the other hand, the Buddhist approach to happiness is to keep a calm mind which requires the ability to separate oneself from worldly desires such as a craving for money or fame.

Moreover, religion can give norms about which behaviors are proper. When we were born as human beings, strictly speaking, we were not human beings at the moment. We did not know what is right and wrong so we hesitated to do actions. We need to learn shared norms, customs, values to live in a society. However, there are so many norms in the world and we might be confused about what is really right. Yet, when a person embraces in a religion, the religion gives definite norms for him. For example, Islamic asks people to take precautions against excess and wastefulness which lead to greed. When people are greedy, they want to have more and more. They are not satisfied with what they already have so they always keep complaining. Accordingly, they lose endeavor and enthusiasm for work and become lazy, which destroys the actions in regard to hereafter. Since Muslims have a strict code of social rules, they do not waver and do actions confidently.

Furthermore, people who have the same religion can build a group identity. Since we are not perfect by ourselves, we need a group in which we can cooperate with each other and find our identity. As we can share worldviews and values with people in the same religion, we often sympathize with them and build up a shared awareness which is developed into a group identity. A group identity is fortified through religious rites and events. While Christians celebrate the Easter which is a Christian festival when Jesus Christ’s return to life, they go to church and have a Easter service together. Ramadan is another example of religious event. Ramadan is the Islamic month of fasting when Muslims refrain from eating, drinking, smoking and sex during daylight hours. The objective of the event is to teach Muslims about patience and submissiveness to God. Like Christians and Muslims, individuals can easily catch a shared spirituality while going through the same rites and events in religion so that they can build a group identity.

On the other hand, religion can be a pain-maker conveying two negative functions. A function of religion is to separate the world into small fragments and deepen conflicts. As each religion has different beliefs and a distinct area, there is low tolerance towards each other. Also, over time, one religion can be divided into many sects. In the early American history, the conflict between the Puritans and the Quakers is a good example of religious intolerance. The Puritans moved to the American continent to build up an ideal religious society which can be described as "City upon a hill", because they were persecuted in England. Even though they were quite ambitious for their religion, there were so many problems to adapt to the new environment and establish a new society. As political and religious leaders overemphasized the rules and laws in the Puritan society, a group of people argued that the Bible should be the most important part, not the rules they made. Then they left the society and became an independent sect, the Quakers. The problem was the Puritans were so obsessed with their religious purity that they oppressed the Quakers so hard. In summary, religion acts as a knife which divides the world into many small pieces.

To make the matter worse, people use religion to justify violence. A religion has its own beliefs and rituals which can injure people and religion can be used to rationalize the abusive actions. The Sarin attrack on the Tokyo subway in 1995 shows how immorally religious people exploit religious beliefs. The members of Aum Shinrikyo released sarin on several lines of the Tokyo Metro, which ended up killing thirteen people, injuring fifty and causing temporary vision problems for about a thousand others. They said that they committed the action to bring down the Japanese government and make the group's founder the "emperor" of Japan. In this case, the members of the religion were blind due to the ambition for their religion. They were overly into the religion that they forgot about their humanity and conscience. Another case is the September 11 attacks which is suicide attacks which killed nearly 3,000 people in the United States. The terrorists who had Islamic background hijacked the two American planes and crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, justifying their actions with their religion.

In conclusion, as religion has both positive and negative functions, it should be carefully understood. Religion can revive a bunch of people nearly dying who lost their hopes for their life. Also religion guides people into a path of happiness, informs what is right and builds up a group of beliefs. On the other hand, religion can fragmentize the world and make people fight against each other. Even worse, people kill others and justify their action with their religion. That is why religion should be regarded as a double-edged sword. We should use the sword to make human beings prosper, not to result in the extinction of human beings.

ahrum : a paper on a scienctist's responsibility (0)

hi, friends! The following is my paper on a scientist's responsibility. Could you read over and correct some grammar mistakes and logically weak points?

Request for a Scientist’s Insight and Strong Mind

Is a scientist responsible for an outcome of his work which he does not expect? In Frankenstein, a scientist, Victor Frankenstein, is eager to discover the secret of life and tries to make a creature out of old body parts. With his ambition as a scientist, he finally succeeds in bringing his creation to life. However, he is so shocked that he runs away from the creature because the appearance of the creature is extremely ugly and monstrous. Abandoned by his creator and rejected by a lot of people due to his bad looks, the creature murders Victor’s brother and bride. Victor regrets having made a monster which kills his beloved ones. Even though Victor begins to work on the secret of life to do good for people, he is ignorant of the outcome of his work and lured by wealth and fame. For fear that such an unfortunate event should occur, a scientist ought to have a moral responsibility of having specialized knowledge to predict the outcome of his work and not being tempted by wealth and fame.
As the interaction between science and a society becomes more important, a scientist is required to have specialized knowledge to predict the outcome of his work in a society. In other words, a scientist should know what he is working on and foresee the influence of his work in public with his insight of the subject. Accordingly, a scientist has to develop his insight and skills for forecasting about the influence in the society. Therefore, when a scientist cannot predict the outcome of his work in a society, he does not meet a requirement as a scientist and his ignorance gives no excuse. Just as we expect citizens in a nation to know and keep the laws of the nation, members of a society anticipate for a scientist to master the specialized knowledge as vocational ethics. In summary, a scientist needs to face up to the principles and the possible outcomes of the subject matter which he is working on, because having specialized knowledge is a qualification for the scientific work.
Even though a scientist is able to foresee the outcomes of his work, he should be strong enough not to be tempted by the pursuit of wealth and fame. If he continues on the work which he thinks can cause terrible effects on people such as working on nuclear weapons for preparation for a war, he is neglecting his social role as a scientist. A scientist ought to have a conscience and remind that “Science affects people” all the time. He must know that his little decisions and trivial mistakes can result in damaging in a lot of people. Despite the fact that most scientists usually work for the government, a company, or a university, they should not attribute to the organization for which they work when the influence of their work turns out negative in the society. The point is not the instruction of the organization but their conscience and decision-making. A scientist is likely to ascribe the bad effects to his organization when the result of his work finally turns out negative. He may give the excuse that he just works for a company without planning to make a bad situation but actually, he just avoids the responsibility to have a conscience when he decides whether he joins a project or not. In conclusion, a scientist should listen to his conscience and not attribute bad situations to an organization, overcoming the temptation of the pursuit of wealth and fame.
As science and a society keep interacting with each other, a scientist’s ignorance and moral corruption can make an uncontrollable monster in a society just like in Frankenstein. As I discussed before, ignorance of a scientist means the inability to look into his subject matter and foresee the outcome of his work due to the lack of insight. Also, moral corruption of a scientist is for a scientist to pursue wealth and fame at the expense of tremendous harm to people and a society. A scientist can overcome ignorance and moral corruption with his infinite affection for the scientific work and reflecting on his conscience. In conclusion, a scientist is not only a pure scientific researcher but also a member of a society which offers him moral responsibility.

It rained all through the day so I didn’t go outside. Actually, I supposed to go to the city center of Kristiansand with Maud and one of her friends who is from Switzerland, if the weather is okay. Maud wanted to introduce Kristiansand to her friend. But the weather sucked for touring. I thought that we would not go touring. As I thought, Maud sent a message not to go touring today on facebook. So, I had no plan to do. I booted my laptop and surfed the internet. After browsing some sites, I wanted to talk to someone and I found Kei on skype. I said hi to him. He responded quickly. We just started to talk. I told him about the party last night and he asked if I was drunk or not. I said that I’ve wanted to be drunk but I couldn’t. He said I could support strong alcohol and I agreed. Haha. He said he was also strong at liquor and recommended two brands of wind. It was Lambursco and Moscato. I should try them some day. Thanks, Kei.
I feel like I want drink a glass of SWEET wine.

ahrum : 8 Sep Wednesday. Twilight. (1)

One day, Ludivine and Vincenzo talked about the novel "Twilight". I wanted to make a comment
about that book but I didn't read the book. Then I decide to read the novel or watch the movie.
Minjung also recommended the book while she and I chatted on skype. I looked around the
DVD section in the library to find the movie "Twilight". I found and started to watch that.
It was amazing. The motif of the story was vampire lengends and its atmosphere was dark and gloomy.
But I was attracted by the movie. The acting of actors and actresses was quite nice.
Especially the actor who acted as Edward expressed the queerness and strongness of vampire well.
I want to watch the film again. Maybe I'll be watching the film in the library again.
See you, Edward. uhmhaha..
We decided to
go to SiA and ask how to pay the fee. And then, we dropped by Sandens shopping mall and
bought some stuffs. I bought a frying pan. After shopping, we visited the police office but there was too
many people waiting. So, we decided to go back to the campus and ask SiA how to pay. The woman at SiA
informed me the bank which I could pay the fee. I should go back to the city center again
to pay the fee because today was the last day to pay the bill. Maud wanted to stay at the campus
and eat lunch so I had to go to the city center alone. I was very tired but I had to
go. I don't want to pay the late fee. Finally, I found the bank and paid the fee. The process
to pay was very simple. hu.. After that, I ate a cheese burger and browsed several shops.
I found the good coat in a shop and tried on the coat. It fitted well on me and satisfied me.
I bought the coat with 300 NOK. I took the Norwegian course today which started 17:15 and ended 19:00. I was a little late and met Rafal in front of the building F. We wanted to enter into the building but the door was locked. We tried to open the door with my student card but it didn’t work. So, we found another entrance of the building and finally discovered windows which was open widely. We went into the building through the windows. Hahaha… We were nice students to try to attend the class but maybe looked like two thiefs.

It was a movie night and today’s movie was “Kick-Ass” Actually, I don’t like this kind of movies. It was a story about a boy who wanted to be a superman. However, he was too normal and not good at sth but by accident he became very famous. And for this he got involved with gangsters. It was easy to expect the end and too bloody. I saw blood so much so it could be defined a very cruel film for me.
After that, I went downstairs and met other friends, many Italian guys, Lianne and Tiffany. We talked about love and the story of Roberto and Maud. It was so funny to make fun of Roberto. haha
Emanule(manu) was a good DJ. I felt that the songs he picked was interesting and good to dance. Lianne and Tiffany were good at dancing and I liked their active actions like gestures and dancing.
Also, I got chance to talk about soccer with manu. He said he was a fan of Christiano Ronaldo and I was too!! I wanted to praise for his skillful ball lifting but I was so shy and I didn’t. a poor girl.

ahrum : 29 Aug Sunday. Elodie’s Birthday (0)

Today was Elodie’s Birthday and yesterday I’ve got a message to go to a pizza buffet in order to congratulate her birthday from Ludivine. I said to her, “Of course I’ll be in.” When I got up in the morning, I remembered her suggestion. I prepared for going out and wrote a letter for Elodie. She became 19 years old. She is still young but can go to a club with me. I can’t remember the exact date but one day, she was rejected to enter into a club. Now she can go into a club! Haha I congratulated her about it and she said, “Yes, finally.” I gave her presents which I brought from Korea. They are a Korean traditional pocket and a bookmark whose shape was han-bok. I explained that the first one meant a luck and the second one showed how one of Korean traditional clothes looked like. She told me that they were so cute and thanked me. I answered, “You’re welcome.” as usual. We met several Italian friends and went to a pizza buffet. As soon as we got the place, we started to eat so much. Because it was a “buffet”, we could eat as much as we wanted. I ate a lot there. Of course, I had a lot of pizza and salad and drank much coke. The pizza was a little salty but tasted nice. I could be satisfied with the taste of foods. We had a great time eating good foods and talking each other. The most interesting event was to sing B-day song to Elodie. Because we are from different countries(France, Italy, Mexico, Indonesia and South Korea), so we sang B-day song in our own languages. When I sang the song, all friends looked at me. Korean language might sound unique to them. I sang the song very happily so Elodie liked it. After eating lunch, we went out and went to a soccer stadium. As you know, I love watching soccer games. (It might be not just soccer games but soccer players!! They look athletic so they are attractive.) We cheered for Emanuele and Dimas. I thought that Emanuele was good at playing soccer because he played the game passionately and tackled well. He looked like a tough player like Lee-Chungyong but I liked the way he played. When it became evening, we got together in the TV room in my dorm, listened to music and dance in accordance with the music. Nadia taught us some steps of Salsa but it was still difficult for me to follow the dance but it was fun.

I got up late and there was no special plan. I thought what I could do and decided to go out and take some pictures. That was a nice choice! The weather was nice and the scenery around the beach was beautiful. I thought I was lucky to live near the nice beach and enjoyed the sunlight. I sunbathed for several minutes and took pictures walking around the beach. I saw people swim, sunbath and fish and they looked happy. I ate cereal and milk on the beach which I packed from my dorm. As I came back to my dorm, I ate some pieces of bread and started watching “Inception” The movie was mysterious and interesting. Before I watched all through the movie, I fell asleep.
1. Fire Alarm
At 4 a.m. the fire alarm in my dormitory rang aloud. I could not help being awaken by the noisy sound. The sound was really boisterous so it was a disaster to many students. Everyone including I, Camile, Ludivine and Elodie in the dorm got out because of the noise. Ludivine said, “I just got to sleep!! OMG.. I’ll kill them.” She said to kill them but I don’t know who they are. Is it an simple accident or a prank of naughty people?

2. taking pictures after rain
After the class of “Peter Young”, I went to the library and surfed the internet.
All of a sudden, it started raining. I didn’t have an umbrella so I decided to wait until it stopped raining. After an hour, it seemed that the rain stopped. YES! It nearly stopped raining! The sky after rain was clear and the scenery around the campus was beautiful so I began to take pictures. Taking pictures became one of my hobbies when I arrived in Norway. Now, I eager to take nice pictrures.

It was the first day to take the course of Intercultural Communication. The professor was from Polland and she spoke slowly so it was easy to understand. Also she said to me, Catia and a boy from Switzerland, “You were from other countries so you should tell me about your culture.” I hope I can introduce Korean culture to her and other classmates.
1. the class of professor "Peter Young"
He is from UK and speaks so fast even in strong British accent so I couldn't catch almost half of what he said. I was frustrated. Maybe what he said was quite familiar topic to me like masterpieces of Shakespeare so I had to include the contents of the lecture. OMG.. how can I follow his class? What's worse, I have no lecture plan. I asked Catia if she had a lecture plan but she didn't have it. Actually all information of lectures are on the fronter of the university homepage. However I can't find anything about this course so I should ask the professor the lecture plan and what I should read and prepare for the course.
2. soybean paste soup
I'm good cook, maybe. I succeed in making soybean paste soup. Although I bought soybean paste(didn't make it), I cooked the soup and the taste of it was delicious. I boiled a cup of water, put some anchovy and then put soybean paste, an onion, a potato and a piece of paprika. While cooking, I was chatting with Kei on facebook so I said to him, "I was proud of the soup." He said he wanted to eat the soup. I said, "Then, come to Norway!"

ahrum : 24 Aug Tuesday. Good Writing. (0)

I went to the class of "Beat Culture" but the class was taught in Norwegian. Maybe I got the wrong information about the classroom and I should check it again if I want to the class next time. I didn't register the class but I want to audit it. So, I had no class today. I went out from the classroom and then had a seat in the library. There were many students so I couldn't find a empty seat. Finally I found one empty seat and I took it. I browsed the section of English language and found out "Good Writing" which was for children but I think it was also useful for me. From this book, I picked up some words and phrased and then put them down on my notebook. This was quite fun because the book contained cute pictures and was interesting. I enjoyed reading and studying.
1. English Grammar
The professor is from England and I love that because I got the good chance to get used to the British accent. Today's lecture was about English dictionaries. The contents were not that difficult to understand because I've studied some terms at SNU. I didn't know the history of English dictionaries and I just used it but I can get some information about that today. Therefore, I felt satisfied with the contents and the lecturer. I will study American English next time and I look forward to it.
2. coffee with Norwegian and Dutch friends
I'm getting to feel easy and comfortable in speaking in English with friends. At first I was very stiff, as I remember, because I felt everything was new and different. I didn't know anyone and there was no Korean. However, now I felt satisfied with my environment. I can speak in English with a lot of international students and this is pretty enjoyable. Although my English is not good enough, I can talk to my friends in English. We can communicate and share feelings. I felt this while I talked to Eva and Andrea, Norwegian girls, and Maud, a Dutch girl drinking a cup of coffee. I had a good time talking to them though the coffee was very expensive. It was 39 NOK. They are so kind and nice. I appreciate I get the chance to study in Norway with so nice people.
1. a boat trip.
I went to a boat trip with my friends. It was free if I signed up at the front of the campus. When I got up in the morning, it was sunny so I felt so good. However, when I and my friends started to walk, it seemed like it would rain. As I thought it started to rain but fortunately, it didn't last for a long time. We got in a boat and began to sail. At first, it was very enjoyable so many friends talked to each other and took pictures. However, as time went, we felt cold because it was very windy and freezing. So, we went inside the room in the boat and stayed comfortable. A sailman brought blankets for us so we could kept warm. After the boat trip, we went to Ivan's place and drank a cup of tea and that was really nice.
2. an e-mail from Hanako sang
Last summer I took part in the Taekwondo project in Tokyo. There I met many nice people. One of them was Hanako sang. She was very kind, nice and taught me basic Japanese but I couldn't contact her. I sent an e-mail after the project but there was no response. However I got an e-mail from her today so I'm very happy. I miss her. She said it was a pity that she couldn't participate in the project in Seoul this year. I agree with her. Maybe I can go to Japan next year or there will be another chance to meet her. I hope so.

At noon, there was a BBQ party near the campus. I wanted to go there but I missed it. When my flatmate Camile left the room, she asked me if I would go to the party or not. I said yes but I didn't know what time the party started. Actually I suppose that it would be in the night. After I saw some students passing away through window, I found the party would be at noon. I ran to the campus but I was late. There was no one so I had to go back to my room. Instead of going the party, I made a call to minjung through skype. She said she had nothing done so she felt gloomy today. I agree with her and I said I had a hard time to adapting to new situation. We talked about school life, weather, friends and boys for over an hour. She said that European boys were generally good-looking, nice and I agree with her. So, she may envy me.

ahrum : 20 Aug Friday. Italian foods and a party at a club (0)

After I took the class of "The dramatic genre in the changing world", I went to Ludivine's room and made the appointment to meet at 8. She said she would eat pizza with several Italian friends so I asked her if I could join them. She said yes. Before I met Ludivine, I took a shower and ate some bread and cereal. We met in front of her room and went to another dormitory. We dropped by ICA to buy some cooking stuffs. It was raining outside so walking to the dormitory was kind of troublesome. However, when we got to the dormitory, some nice foods were waiting for us. There, some Italian guys were cooking pizza and a kind of roll. I heard the name of the roll but I can't remember the name exactly because I am not used to Italian language. The pizza was little burned but tasted very nice. I said to Vincenzo, the cook, "It tasted really nice and you are a good cook!" He smiled. We enjoyed the foods, took pictures together and had a good time. After that, we went to Pri 6 to take part in a traffic light party. In a traffic light party, you should wear clothes in red, yellow and green according to your situation. If you're in a relationship, you have to wear clothes in red. If you're dating but not taken, you have to wear clothes in yellow. Green means being single. I had to wear green clothes but I didn't have green clothes so I chose yellow cardigan instead. However, many of my friends didn't care about color. When we got the place, there were many people so we should wait for a couple of minutes. We danced in accordance with the music in the club(Pri 6). The atmosphere of the club was similar to that in Korea. It was enjoyable so I hung out until 2 a.m. But there was a problem. Many friends wanted to go to the extended party but I didn't. I had to go to my dorm but I didn't know the right direction. I was lost in the dark. Fortunately, I found the way to my dorm after wandering for about 30 minutes. I was very tired when I got to my dorm so I fell asleep quickly.

ahrum : 19 Aug Thursday. Asian Grocery. (0)

One day, a buddy taught me where I could get asian foods. I've marked that on my map at that time and tried to find the place today. I felt that I got used to the downtown so I found the asian grocery easily. The name of grocery was Vungtau. It was so interesting to browse the shop. I picked a coconut milk, a bunch of leek, an onion, a piece of cake. The coconut milk looked very delicious and was cheap, so I chose it without hesitation. Also, I met a guy from France there. He spoke to me, "When do you eat Chinese foods?" Maybe he thought that I was Chinese. I told him that I was Korean not Chinese and I ate Korean foods when I missed my home. He said he was studying at the campus in Grimstad. He informed me his e-mail address and asked if he could share foods with me. I said, "If it's possible, I'll send an e-mail." We got scattered after handshaking.

1. English Grammar
I wanted to check out if the course of English Grammar was appropriate or not for me. So I entered the classroom as if I audit the lecture. I expect the orientation of the course to go on. However, the professor of the course gave me exam papers and an answer sheet. OMG! It was a pre-test. At first, I was very embarrassed so I asked the assistant whether it was right for me and I was in the proper place. She said yes. Therefore, I took a test on the first day of the course. Fortunately, the test was not that difficult and similar to TEPS.

2. X-ray test
After that, I had to go to the vaccination office to get a document which allowed me to take an X-ray test. Because I am not European, I should take the test. It took quite a long time to find the office. As I explained my situation to the employee, she gave me a document. She said I had to go to EG hospital to take an X-ray test. It was troublesome because the hospital was very far from the office. She taught me how to get the hospital and recommended to take a bus. So, I got out the office and found the place I could take the bus. The number of bus which I should take was 10 or 11 but I couldn't find the bus. So, I decided to go there on my foot. Usually, most offices close at 3 p.m. in Norway and I had to hurry up. It was 2:30 p.m. I asked many Norwegians where the hospital was and surprised at their English speaking ability. Although they were not students, they spoke English so well. After I got the test, I found some berries on the way back to home, picked and ate some of them. They were so sweet. The scenery around them was also nice so I took a lot of pictures. I was very happy because I was in a peaceful world, Norway.

3. bike auction
A bike auction was planned to start at 6:35 p.m. Ludivine, Elodie and I met at 6:10 in s.t olavsvei(our dormitory). As we arrived in the campus, there were many people and bikes. I found several bikes which looked quite nice and cute. Then, the auction started. When bikes appeared on the table, people shouted prices and they competed each other to get bikes. I couldn't buy a bike because the prices of bikes were much more expensive than I expected. However, Dimas, a friend of mine bought a secondhand bike and was very satisfied with it. I tried on the bike and felt that was good enough. So, I told him, "You got the quite good bike." and he smiled.
OMG! Finally I got the internet. It's so nice although the internet in Norway is much slower than that in Korea. Now I can contact my family and friends. I lost my cell phone in the plane as soon as the flight took off so I didn't make any phone call to my parents. They must be very worried about me. But now I got the network. It made me feel relieved.

Even though there was an orientation of University of Agder, it was so broad and not detailed. So, I took another orientation on how to resister classes on the student web site and what to do after arriving in Norway. Here I got more information about studying in Norway. What made me crazy today was a student card. I had to make a student card after showing my passport and a semester card. I checked up a semester card but I forgot to bring my passport. OMG. I waited for a waiting number but I couldn't get my student card. A staff in student center said that a passport was necessary because he had to compare my name and birthday written on the semester card to those written in my passport. Maybe I should come again and make it tomorrow.

ahrum : a good way to improve English (0)

I'm very interested in improving English.
During summer vacation, I'm taking an intensive English course which is provided by the department of English Education in my university.
This course is focusing on speaking in English so in every class, there are a lot of chances to practice speaking in English.
However, it is difficult to speak in English fast and accurately for me.
I think I'm good at writing in English rather than speaking in English.
To speak English fluently, it is necessary to come up with accurate words which can express what I want to say exactly but I don't have the ability to do it. I feel that I am improving but I have to practice and study more.
My professor said my fluency is average but accuracy is little low.
He advised me to record what I said, listen to it and be aware of my mistakes. After this training, I can lessen mistakes because I know about my mistakes. I think it is a good way to improve my English.
I haven't kept my diary in several months.
Maybe I became lazy or I had nothing special to write down. haha
By the way, I'm going to Norway on 11th August this year.
Actually I go to Norway as a exchange student.
My parents wanted me to go U.S because my major is English Education and they think that U.S is the best place to practice English.
I agree with them but I chose Norway considering my grades and tuition fees. I believe I can practice English in Norway with a lot of international students. So, I am really looking forward to it.
Is there anyone who has been to Norway or is interested in?
Or any experience as a exchange student?
I need your advice!

The final exams were over. Today, I took the last test of " World Music". It was very interesting subject because I could know about African music or Latin American music. African music is so rhythmic and unique tember so I like it! It was also fresh taking the course which was led by American teacher who studied world music and Korean music.
When I turn out my exam, I said to her, "Thank you for the whole semester!!" She looked happy and I was, too.
And I'm having a winter vacation!! I will go to London and Paris in the next month, January 2010. I'm planning to depart alone though meeting many friends there. I'm really looking forward to it. ><
