Japanese people nod without saying anything, it is creepy

My apartment has 200 hundreds family units.
When I pass someone here, I say “Good morning.”
However some persons just nod without saying anything.
I don't like their attitude but this is the one of typical Japanese style.
For example, when the teachers ask to the students, “Do you understand what I mean?”
The students nod in agreement without saying anything.
I value greeting, smile and eye-contact but a lot of Japanese people especially young people speak without face expressions.
They are creepy.

Haha! You are quite funny.

That is a Noh mask, right? I had a nightmare about it once.

That's right, this is Noh mask.
Tengu mask is also scary.
We really say
It means mysterious or expressinless.
Thank you for your comment.

Yes eye to eye contact is important. It gives you a sense of sincerity.

Some people say, “I am shy.”
However it doesn't relate to shyness, it is etiquette.
Do you have the same experience in Japan?
Thank you for your comment.

I agree!
When I teach english at my summer camp, all my Japanese students nod when I ask a question, even thought they don't understand. Then later they say in Japanese, "I don't know. How do you say nantokakantoka in English?".
I hate it! But I know its common =/
Jan 22nd 2012 21:37 mikaringo7
Oh, you did? I can imagine the situation.

even thought they don't understand.

They should have asked questions.
They might be reserved but it was not a good way to learn English so our English is poor. haha
Thank you for your corrections.

Anytime :)
Yes. I always ask many questions about Japanese. But I still feel like I don't understand sometimes lol.

But it never hurts to ask really.

Ask me about Japanese' weird custom or behavior, I know a lot of things.
You must hesitate to ask something weird to your school friends, right?

I had a teacher in Hawaii, who would get so angry if he had a class with mostly Asian students that he would sometimes yell or leave the class, saying if the students weren't there to learn and participate at the University level, in the University style the class was meaningless. If he had a class full of Local students who may not have been able to memorize the answers as well, but came to the class sincerely and shared their energy with the rest of the class, and he would be happy. It was interesting, I was in a study group with most of the Japanese students. My main role was translating the teacher's English into English.

We don't say anything for waiters at the restaurants such as “Thank you.”
when we step on somone's foot, we don't apologize on the trains.
It is embarrassing.
Do you feel the similar feeling?
Thank you for your comment.

I have plead guilty to wanted to silently acknowledge people without making a lot of noise. I do apologize if hurt or inconvenience someone, but most of the older people are very kind and polite around where I live, but the young people are just young people, so I try not to judge outward behavior. When I was in the student congress in Hawaii, we had a disagreement about the congress room behavior. If I am in a room with other people I can't ignore them and do my own thing. I feel like we are all sharing the space together for a reason and we may never have another chance to interact. So the pacific Islanders and I would always have conversations, but the local Asian students present and least one European American student said we should be quiet because they didn't come there to interact. We said they should go where there are no people or to the library. What do you think?
Jan 23rd 2012 14:39 mikaringo7
It is very difficult, to be honest, I can't judge that case.
However in my case, I am on your side.
I must have tried to communicate with other people in the congress room.
Japanese people are not uncomfortable being silence. haha
Now Young people are always looking at their cell phone when they are with their friends.

I agree with you.
I think that the greetings are the first step of the communication to start human relations.
Jan 22nd 2012 21:57 mikaringo7
That's right!
We have to teach them for young people.
I think that these rude office workers in my apartment must greet only for their bosses very politely.
Thank you for your comment.

Thank you for your comment.

I also value eye contact when talking to someone. I can understand if they don't look at you the whole time while talking to them. If it's a simple greeting then I would feel ignored.

Oh, no! I wrote “20000 family units”
It is a HUGE and GIGANTIC apartment, thank you for your corrections.
A lot of Japanese people look away in another direction while the conversation so it is easy to distinguish Japanese people among Asians. haha
