What is the best Japanese gift for my American friend?
My American friend is coming to Japan soon.
My husband and I went shopping to look for some gifts for him.
He likes kanji so I want to give something printed kanji.
My husband shouted, “I found a fundoshi! It is a Japanese traditional underwear and it is printed kanji.”
Fundoshi is an Japanese men's underwear made of a long cloth.
It was printed ”突撃”, it means rush.
However nowadays there are fewer opportunities such as festivals to put them on.
I rejected his idea.
I don't want to my American friend to think I am a pervert.

Another nice gift would be something that they could use often, like a small set of bowls with kanji on them. It's also nice if the item has a history or some kind of tale that goes with it. That way, when their friends are visiting their home and see it, they can talk about it, saying, "Ah, my friends in Japan gave me that. It's from such-and-such region and it traditionally meant such-and-such." That's what most call a "conversation piece". :)
when their friends are visiting their home and see it, they can talk about it,
I agree with you, this is a good advice but I thought bowls are fragile items so I hesitated to buy them.
If I give him Fundoshi, he will not brag it to his frinds.
Like this, “Hey, is this cute?”
