@ What Did the Earthquake Tell Us? 地震から学ぶこと

Although I wanted to believe in the endless potential of humankind, I have seen enough of the terrible power of nature, because I witnessed the disaster which hit Japan.

Enormous earthquakes struck in the north of Japan. It's reported that over 2000 people are dead or missing so far.

I couldn't help but realize how vulnerable humans are to natural threats. I also felt that nature, which is supposed to be of help to us, might have vented its anger at us.

We might have fought against nature in many ways. We might have violated natural laws.

We ought to enjoy the grandeur and beauty of nature, right? We ought to love nature though...

I feel like the earthquakes, although it was the cruelest way, told us what we should be and how we should be from this day forward...

I'm glad that you are okay. I am watching the news about the Fukushima No. 1 reactor. The last thing that I saw stated that the US Air Force was flying coolant in and the power company was trying to prevent total meltdown. Please take care.

In English, we also refer to nature as "Mother Nature."

Jala,

Thank you for your corrections and comment!!!

The news about the nuclear reactor has been threating us a lot. However, Japan's officials announced that they did not expect high risks from it this morning. I heard that some people (50 people or so) have already been exposed to radiation, but it seems that the dosage was few. I still remain in doubt. Hope it is just a minimal risk levels.

Thanks a lot!

Well, there's one person from 東京 accounted for. At least i know you're alright. Aside from the total devastation crap the various news agencies constantly spout for ratings, i really don't know how everyone is.
Mar 13th 2011 10:22 mirai
It's totally hidious, 翔太。

I called my friend who lives in Tokyo this morning. She sounded so tired. She was not able to go back to her home with no transportation after the earthquake, and has been staying at someone's house. She said that she would die during the quake.
Mar 13th 2011 12:08 翔太
Well, the good news is that it can't get any worse. It already happened. It'd be nice to know what isn't dead and destroyed there, instead of what is.

CNN continues to show us a map with a "code" inset in the upper right corner, but the language is Nihongo. I wish we gaijins could know what the red, gray, green, orange, etc., colors surrounding and within Nihon (on the map of Nihon) mean in English.

I've just made a modest donation to the "Save The Children" federation -- specifically for helping children survivors of the Nihon earthquake and tsunami. It is only a grain of sand, I know, but if we could all pitch in, we might be able to help "build a beach," and each of us could give one child comfort, shelter, food, and clothing. ;-) God bless.

I want to make a donation! How do I go about doing that?
Mar 13th 2011 05:59 牛juice
Japan is in a very dangerous ocean -- it will be hard to adjust to the extreme environment! But if we can build with the grain of nature we can prevent more damage! (with the grain = not against but with someone)
Mar 13th 2011 08:51 John Boy
Gentleman above "Juice": Just Google "Save The Children" They'll show you what to do.

Everyone,

I am so grateful for your thoughtful messages and your warm heart.

I watched CNN this morning, and I knew that lots of Americans wanted to donate. I was so touched.

Thank you so much.

@John Boy: You can call me "tsunehiko" I donated to Red Cross, is that good too?

@mirai You are welcome! I feel better now that I did it. :) I wish I could give more, but unfortunately, I don't have any money.
Mar 13th 2011 11:48 mirai
Tsunehiko,

It's so sweet of you to do so! I really appreciate your warmth and your help!
Mar 13th 2011 12:16 恒彦
^^ Thanks! I am glad to hear that! I have never been to Japan, and I don't know anyone personally that has been to Japan, and I don't know any of you personally, but because you are a big part of my life, I feel heartbroken about the event.

When I read about it at 12:19 AM (When it was happening) I corrected the persons journal, and I started to wonder, how bad it was.... Then I started to worry, because I realized it was powerful. I hope that the person who posted that Journal is okay, because they haven't been on since... :(

3:19 PM in Japan*

Sugoi, tsunehiko! My grandmother was a "Red Cross Lady," and I was very proud of her. ;-) Mirai, you are more than welcome. Small gifts; big hearts! ;-) More, new videos and photos are being shown here daily. Just gut-wrenching. I wish I had a $1,000,000,000 to give to Nihon.
Mar 13th 2011 12:23 恒彦
Yeah! That is a lot of money!!!! Is that the costs? I definitely wish I could give more... However, I think you are right, if everyone in America gave a dollar donation to Japan, that would have more than $300,000,000 dollars. So, if one tenth of the population gave $10, they would have $300,000,000+ Some people will give more than that, so I think we can do it...
Mar 13th 2011 12:30 恒彦
*If everyone in America gave a dollar donation to Japan, that would result in more than $300,000,000. Actually, I don't know if one-tenth the population will donate to Japan.
Mar 13th 2011 12:27 恒彦
:) I am proud of the fact that mankind is ready and willing to help those in need.
Mar 13th 2011 12:32 freshbread3
Actually that is what the Red Cross is asking for - if everyone could just give $10.
Mar 13th 2011 12:30 恒彦
Yeah. I did. :D
Mar 13th 2011 14:29 mirai
My TV has been on. Japan really appreciates the donations and help from other countries. Now, we have got rescue teams from the US, Germany, Swizerland and China. Thank you all!!!
Mar 13th 2011 15:32 恒彦
^^ Yup!! I am so glad that we could help!
Mar 13th 2011 12:30 freshbread3

I'm happy to hear that you are ok, Mirai.
Mar 13th 2011 14:28 mirai
Thank you! freshbread. I live in Kyushu, Japan.

I did not know that the danger of tsunami, it was something unexpected. I think that people in the Tohoku area had felt the same. They had held some evacuation drills several times, because they knew that the place was one of the quake-prone areas. However, the power of the quakes was more.
Mar 13th 2011 16:07 freshbread3
It is crazy to hear that towns have been completely wiped out and maybe 1/2 or more of their residents are missing. I pray that help will quickly reach those who are in need of being rescued or need to receive relief.

Miraiさんは九州に住んでいますか?とにかく、無事で何よりですね。
私もずっとTBSのニュースを注目してます。とても大変なことになったね。
政府もいろいろな問題を解決しなければなりませんね。特に福島第一原発の放射ですね。

chin chan,

ほんとうにたいへんなことになりました。

すべてのTVの番組が 地震の報道です。 今は 原発の放射量が 最小限におさまるように 政府も努力しているようです。 このことは、すごく心配です。
