Game : What does "Why not top up" mean? (2)

I bought a weekly pass of Sydney Cityrail and noticed a word of caution: WHY NOT TOP UP.
What does it mean? I speculate two possibilities as below;
1. Please make sure top side up when you insert this ticket.
2. Please buy another ticket when it expires.

Game : Why did it make him angry? (2)

The text was my post for an international web forum about Chinese history of the Middle Ages. It was a reply for a Chinese who insisted that Qing wasn't a Chinese dynasty.

# As you may know, Qing was a Dynasty of Conquest,
# but I think they were commonly accepted as a Chinese dynasty.

After the post, he seemed angry. I can't figure out the reason. Please tell me if you understand it. And, of course, please correct my mistakes.

--
> Had some Japanese supposed that if Toyotomi had conquered China
> through Korea and that would be another 'Chinese Dynasty'?

Roughly speaking, Japanese regard Toyotomi Hideyoshi in his old age as a kind of paranoid. I can't answer your question because it seems absolutely nonsense even to imagine that Japan could conquer China.

In contrast, China itself has a lot of good examples within its history because a lot of Chinese dynasties had their roots in non-Han-Chinese ethnic groups. We may say that there were just few dynasties which were established by Han-Chinese; Han; Song; and Ming. In this view, we can say that Qing was just another Chinese dynasty.
In addition, what the word "Han-Chinese" means is very differ from age to age because Han-Chinese themselves have done fusion after fusion throughout its history. So how can we define a dynasty whether it's a "purely Chinese" or not?

In conclusion, I can accept Qing as a non-Chinese dynasty if it bases on reliable studies. However, if it comes from simple nationalism, I have to say no; nationalism is a modern concept which can be hardly applied for the Middle Ages.

Game : Contrived job offer: Give you advice please (4)

I've still been looking for a job. I check Gumtree.com.au, a free classified site, and have found a suspect offer.
One offer is as below;

"Business and sales oportunity"
http://sydney.gumtree.com.au/c-Jobs-part-time-evening-weekend-Business-and-sales-oportunity-W0QQAdIdZ168702704

This classified is itself suspicious because it doesn't tell any details about the job. In addition, the advertiser put another classified in which he WANTED a housekeeping job as a 22 year old guy;

"Housekeeper for you"
http://sydney.gumtree.com.au/c-Jobs-part-time-evening-weekend-Housekeeper-for-you-W0QQAdIdZ168703937

Out of curiousity, I'm going to meet him this Tuesday. Do you think it is dengerous?

Game : "Adjective + desu" in Japanese (1)

"Adjective + desu", e.g. "oishii desu (おいしいです)" and "ureshii desu (うれしいです)", is quite common expression as a polite form even for native Japanese speakers; but actually it's incorrect.
One reason you shouldn't use it is that sometimes it sounds childish especially for elder people. Another reason is that, if you get used to it, you'll make other mistakes to say like "oishii da (おいしいだ)" and "ureshii dearu (うれしいである)" as plain forms: They're completely incorrect. Native Japanese speakers never use such expression.
I then recommend you to say just perfective like "oishii (おいしい)" and "ureshii (うれしい)" in such cases or simply to avoid it.

To say exactly, a correct polite form of adjective is like "oishuu gozai masu (おいしゅうございます)" and "ureshuu gozai masu (うれしゅうございます)" but it sounds bookish nowadays.

This is what I want to say:

Game : Confusing point in Japanese time expression (2)

# This entry is based on my comment for another learner's article.

In Japanese, "gozen (午前)" means "am", "gogo (午後)" means "pm", and "ji (時)" means "hour". For example, "gozen ni-ji (2-ji)" means "2 am" and "gogo ju-ji (10-ji)" means "10 pm". It looks like easy one-to-one relationship; however, there is a major hole -- it's about "juni-ji (12-ji)".

Actually, many Japanese often use "rei-ji (0-ji)" instead of "juni-ji" because we unconsciously recognize time as a "from 0 up to 12/24" scheme.
So if you just say "juni-ji" without "gozen/gogo", it often means 12 pm (but it depends on context).
You also shouldn't say "gozen/gogo juni-ji" because we often can't decide them whether 12 am or 12 pm.

To avoid such problems, I recommend you to always use "gozen/gogo rei-ji" instead of "gozen/gogo juni-ji".

This is what I'm trying to say:

Game : Job trial (1)

I've been looking for a job in Sydney for a month and I have finally been able to find a restaurant which give me an opportunity as a waiter.
Today, I worked there for two hours as a trial. Maybe I've done very well and they will tell me the result Saturday. I hope to pass the trial and get the job.
Besides, I haven't known about the division of labor in Australian restaurants: There are many functions including food-runners, order-takers, cashiers and so on. When I worked as a waiter in Japan, every person had to all roles in the floor.

What I'm trying to say:

Game : Looking for a job (1)

After I found a residence in Sydney, I have been trying to find a casual job. There are many Japanese restaurants which I can be easily hired, but they generally pay too little money for employee and I want to find a local job, which provides good conditions. There is no information magazine about part-time jobs in Sydney so that I have to go shops and restaurants (potentially employer) directly. It is a quite flesh experience for me.

This is what I'm trying to say:

Game : Mirror shops (1)

Today, I found that there are some mirror shops in Sydney. It seems a bit strange for me because there are no such shops in Japan. In Japan, mirrors are sold at DIY shops or so and no one runs a specific shop. How many mirrors are bought by people in Sydney per year? Can a shop manager earn enough in his business?

This is what I'm trying to say:

Game : Summer has gone (1)

Today is a cool day. Noisy cicadas have gone away to anywhere and it has been like autumn flavor. The summer season is nearing an end.

By the way, the past few days it was hard to find an interesting news because the news has almost all been election-related or drug contamination in show business. The situation will be changed after August 30th, the election date, I hope.

This is what I'm trying to say:

Game : Korean rocket launching (1)

Today, Korea Aerospace Research Institute launched KSLV-1, their first domestically-developed rocket. They succeeded to launch, however, failed to separate the fairing and the payload satellite didn't come into the scheduled orbit.
I think it's unfortunate but anyone who trys to launch a rocket surely have to deal with such failure. Keep trying and you will succeed in it someday.

This is what I'm trying to say:

Game : Abolishment of Orient Express (1)

The Independent, an English paper, reported that Orient Express is going to be abolished within this year. The last train is going to depart from Vienna to Strasbourg on December 12th. The night train started its history in 1883 and connected Paris and Istanbul at peak. However, deveropments of air network and motorization have made the express's importance declined after the WW2.
I've never boarded the express but I feel it's a bad news because you will be unable to experience nineteenth-century style laid-back journey.

This is What I'm trying to say:

Game : The flu outbreak (1)

The H1N1 flu has been going around in Japan. There has been more than 110,000 patients and it already caused three deaths. Since schools' summer vacation is going to end in the end of August, the authorities are cautious about further outbreak.

This is what I'm trying to say:

Game : Reading "Desolation Road" (0)

Today, I have finished to read the translated version of "Desolation Road" by Ian McDonald. I felt that it's lyrical and mythical.
Incidentally, the novel's Japanese title is "Martian Nocturne (火星夜想曲)", it means to remind a reader of "Martian Chronicle" by Ray Bradbury. The original title (荒涼街道) seems better about the former novel even though I love the later too.

This is what I'm trying to say:

Game : Old movies (5)

I have recently spent much time to watch old movies. "Ladri di Biciclette" was followed by "The Philadelphia Story" and "Sergeant York". These old films are slow-paced and understandable for me without subtitles.
However, I can understand only 10% of the conversation of the movies. As I'll go to Australia on the next month, I wonder if I'm doing the right thing.

This is what I'm trying to say:

Game : New rocket (0)

JAXA, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, plans to launch their newest rocket H2B on September 11th. This new rocket is an upgraded model of H2A, the existing main rocket, and can launch a maximum of 16.5t for low-earth orbit; It's 1.4 times as much as H2A. H2B will be mainly used for launching HTV which supplies various goods for the International Space Station.

This is what I'm trying to say:

cf http://www.jaxa.jp/countdown/h2bf1/index_e.html

Game : Wind-power generation (2)

Tokyo Electric Power announced that they are planning a proving test of wind-power generation on the high seas with Tokyo University. The experimental facility will be built in the eastern coast of Chiba prefecture by the end of the year.
Japan has traditionally focused on developing non-fossil fuel because they have few resources in the territory. Recently, this tendency has further backed up by the efforts against global warming.

This is what I'm trying to say:

Game : Obon festival (0)

August 12th to 16th are the period of the Obon festival (Buddhist All Soul's Days) in Japan. During the period, many Japanese people take days off and return their hometown to visit family graves. As a result, urban areas such as Tokyo become quiet in the period.
Since my family graves are in Tokyo, I can stay my home and enjoy this rare quiet situation every year. However, as of tomorrow, people will come back to urban areas and the bustle of the city will be returned. It's slightly sad for me.

What I'm trying to say:
