What's the difference between awful and terrible?

Could you make sentences using these words?

They are interchangeable; they mean the same thing. Usually though, the only difference is people will say a tragedy is terrible while something less significant is awful.

The hurricane destroyed the town; it was terrible.

The film was awful. (You can also say: The film was terrible, but when you say it, you are saying that it was almost unwatchable.)
