About me

Hello my friends and newcomers to Lang-8.

I started writing here on February 9th, 2010. In the beginning I would translate my Japanese into English word by word, which was interesting, but at the same time it was a burden to exchange each word for every entry.

One day I wrote an entry asking if it would ever be possible to write in one's learning language, English in my case, without thinking first of one's mother tongue, in my case Japanese. An intriguing answer came from Singapore. Stephanie, who gave me an encouraging comment, told me that the key to thinking in English is to learn English using English only, while trying not to link it with my Japanese. In short, she recommended I should think each word in English would be a completely new concept for me. Five months have already passed since I made up my mind to think in English first and it's been working well so far.

Why you may ask am I so eager to learn other languages in the first place?

At times it seems ridiculous to put forth such an effort to improve my skills since it doesn't make me any money nor does it make me more lovable by others. In a sense a language is just a tool to communicate with others, right? However for me, it's more than that!

I live in a suburb of Tokyo, Japan. My life is very simple. I work, practice Aikido and take care of my wife and daughter. That's all. Mastering a new language means to acquire a brand-new window in a shuttered room, to gain a new perspective to see the world. I desperately need it to make my ordinary life fresh and clear every morning.

Words are like stars; sentences are like the lines that connect with the words. When we look up at the sky at night we see many stars shinning above our heads. If we don't know anything about constellations, we won't see any pictures in the sky. If we only know the north star, then all we know is the direction of north (...this is actually the case with me when I observe the night sky). The more we understand a certain language, the more we can see clear images about this world. As an explorer in the universe of English and Spanish, I'd like to get a clearer image of the constellations.

Thank you all for reading this through to the end.

Japanese is my mother tongue which I would be delighted to be of assistance for anyone to learn. Let's be Lang-8 friends!

I have little to add to rippasama’s testimonial, but I’ll try anyway. Aside from being エッチ, jubay makes fabulous corrections. He always tries to make corrections and suggestions that truly reflect the writer’s intention. Since jubay knows that a language is connected to the culture in which it’s used, he gives valuable advices rather than simply correct grammatical mistakes. Therefore, although he’s rather エッチ, I strongly recommend jubay as your new friend.

My first impression of Jubay was that he must be an エッチ person. Not エッチ in a bad sense but エッチ in a poetic and sophisticated way. When I first read some of Jubay's entries, I was actually provoked by his well thought out エッチ content. Well, actually I didn't think it was well thought out at first (because I was somehow offended) but after exchanging a few words with him, I found that he was actually trying to achieve something noble through his writing. After spending some time correcting his entries, it soon dawned on me that Jubay is one of those people who you want to have as your friend, teacher and rival. He doesn't like to express things the easy way and he definitely has his own way of doing things. We often do しっぺ返し just to provoke and inspire each other to great heights. He's also adept at poetry though he's just too shy to admit it. In short, Jubay might appear to be an エッチ writer at first sight but don't judge him too quickly; once you get to know him well, you will realize that he is a 詩文の師匠 in disguise, always willing to help you with his wealth of Japanese knowledge.

There are so many good things to say about Jubay. First of all, he's a wonderful writer. Nothing escapes his notice, especially subtleties and nuances of family life that less sensitive natures would never see, let alone capture in such moving and poetic vignettes. For him, humdrum doesn't exist. Secondly, he's an exemplary student. It's a joy to take the time to correct his writing and explain concepts because he is eager to learn and truly absorbs the knowledge. His remarkable grasp of written English demonstrates this immense accumulation and understanding. Finally, he's a dear soul, resplendent in the qualities all of us wish to have- humble, sincere, kind and caring. His is a friendship that I'm honored to have.
