How to Japan

The other day, I saw an advertisement of a book titled "How to Japan."
Have you heard of it? I haven't heard of it but it seems to have become a bestseller.
It was written by a British journalist who had lived in Japan for 14 years, and shows Japanese society in English. It is like introduction to Japan for non-Japanese people who is going to live in Japan.

The advertisement introduces a few of the content.
Here you are.

- You cannot see Kabuki in Kabukicho.

- For the nth time someone ask you if you can eat natto.

- Find out your blood type, and your shoe size in centimeters.

Sorry, if you don't live in Tokyo, you could have no idea about the first one.
Regarding the second and third ones, if you live in Japan, you might nod in agreement. (^o^)
Especially, we Japanese often talks about blood type. Each blood type is associated with character. For example, people, whose blood type is A, is serious and a stickler for detail. When somebody asks you your blood type, he generally has already guessed your blood type from your character. So after you answer to it, I bet his reaction is either "I thought as much!" or "Ah, that's incredible!" (^o^)

By the way, almost Japanese people know their own body size, such as shoe size, height and weight.
But I have heard that some non-Japanese people don't know their height or weight and it's not rare case. Is it true?
Do you know your height and weight?
And, do you know your blood type? If you plan to live in Japan in the future, find out them. haha!!

I know my height and weight!
Awww, my blood type is A+ does that mean I'm supposed to be a stickler? : (
I wonder if I should check the book out myself...

Sand, just to let you know, you are very impressive with your English. ^^

Hello, Sand.
Well, I actually have no idea about my current weight and height, or shoe size ^^;;
I don't think people care much about that in Croatia.

When I was applying for scholarship for studying in Japan (失敗), I needed to find out my blood type, so..... it's O+
Otherwise, I don't think I'd ever find that out XD

Can you guess what kind of person I am? (口_へ)

Knowing your blood type would probably be rare.

For the others, from most common to least common would be shoe size, weight and height.
Shoe size is common because when people buy shoes, they will know from their last pair what size they were.
Weight is also much more accessible because you require just a common scale and most people have them. Height, on the other hand, is checked the least because there is often no reason to go to the trouble of measuring.

I know my height because I am relatively tall and am often asked how tall I am.

I read a journal about blood types and
people's characteristics a while back.

I'm A negative. I can be serious and I
am a stickler for details sometimes.

I don't know my blood type. Shame on me!

I actually didn't know my blood type until I came to Japan. I went to a clinic to donate my blood and when the doctor asked me, he was really surprised when I didn't know what it was. I knew from that day on that I was a B. Its funny though, because people always guess I'm a B, which sucks because that must mean I'm sensitive and anal... :-( But if you look at my room, though, you'll immediately know I'm not anal at all! :-)

Of course, people usually know their own height and weight, unless you really don't want to know and hide from doctors....

I think most people know their measurements, weight and blood type. Some people might refuse to tell others because they are embarrassed, but otherwise I think it's impossible to escape your height and weight since it's written on your driver's license. The only reason that a person wouldn't know is if they were a teenager or kid and experienced a growth spurt.

> Josephas,

Oh, your blood type is A. It is also said that people of type A are well-organized. (^.^)
(I'm not sure "well-organized" can be used for human though...^^;)
Thank you for your corrections and comment!

> Kame Sennin.

Your blood type is O. I see. Type O people are said to be generous. Does it apply to you/ (^.^)
Thank you for your comment!

> madao,

You are tall. Me too. So I'm often asked my height. (^^;) As you say, there is no trouble if you don't know your height. I wonder why Japanese people know their height. haha.
Thank you for your comment!

> EroOyaji,

Your blood type is A. I see. 40% of people are type A in Japan. (^.^)
Thank you for your corrections, explanation and comment!

> atomu,

No, no. Relationship between blood type and characteristic is not 迷信. It's kind of statistics. (^.^)
Thank you for your comment!

> mixmasterJ,

Haha. People guess your blood type correctly. (^.^) Type B is said to be going-my-way person.
Thank you for your comment!

> Shin,

I'm surprised to hear that height and weight are written on a driver's license!

I know my height and weight more or less (within a little bit). I have no idea what my blood type is, but I'll remember to figure it out before I go to Japan!

cuavsfan,

Yes, you should figure it out before coming to Japan! (^.^)
