Angel's Share (天使の分け前)

I went to the Suntory distiller to attend a seminar about single malt whisky blending. If you've read my journal for a long time, you know I like drinking. Even so, I rarely drink whisky because of strong flavor. The reason of my attend is that I was asked by my friend and the distiller is in my neighborhood. Suntory whisky, Yamazaki, is famous for
sophisticated aroma and flavors and its full body, which won the best gold in 2009 in the UK.

At first, my friend and I looked on the processing of whisky in the factory and we learned a lot of words about it such as mashing, distillation, maturation and so on. One of my favorite words is an “angel’s share”, which means a mount of evaporated whisky in a barrel during their aging. It is said that a fourth of whisky has evaporated for them. ^^;

Yamazaki is blended of same malt, but made by mainly different five kinds of barrel. We tasted unblended whisky of the different barrels and different aging time respectively. We learned how to taste them, color, aroma, flavor, and aftertaste. Each glass has 15ml and looks a little, but I was totally plastered when I tasted 10 glasses. ^^

When I got on the train on the way home, I thought I smelled like a bum. Hehe. Whatever, I understand whisky is a god send or something, but I still prefer beer. Haha.

Ciao.

Nothing added,
Nothing suctracted.

Interesting! I've never been to a whiskey distillery - I've seen how they make beer and rum, but not whiskey... I guess I'm not too fond of it. But it would be an interesting experience! I hadn't heard of the 'angel's share' before, it definitely has a pleasant air about it though. :)

You had 10 glasses? Hahaha. No wonder you felt like you smelled like a bum. I've never tasted whiskey before. I'm not really fond of strong drinks.

I don't drink but my roommate would have loved the tour you were on! Sounds like you had a great time. ^__^

I love Whisky and other dark spirits. The French have one called Armagnac which is a brandy (and grape based) & it's from near the south west region (e.g. near border of Spain). This is my favourite of all favourites but a bit pricey for glugging. I've never been to a distillery though. That must've been a great day out.

A quick web search did not immediately turn up any references to a relevant Best Gold award, but I don't really know anything about whiskey (other than that it contains crazy amounts of ethyl alcohol, obviously), so maybe I'm just ignorant on the subject.

Did you really drink ten glasses of whiskey in one day? You're lucky you don't have permanent brain damage. That's way too much. Whiskey is MUCH more potent than beer. Even I know that, and I've never personally met anyone (IRL) who drinks the stuff.

こら、「tasting」なら後でspit outでしょう!お前さん、普通に「drinking」したじゃん?

Oh, I only thought that the Scottish used the nickname "Angel's share". Basically the Yamazaki whiskey is Scotch, but only whiskey which meets certain requirements (namely originating from Scotland) may be called "Scotch". It's also interesting to note that in the whiskey industry, a product cannot be both "single malt" and "blended" simultaneously. Single malt only comes from a single barrel, whereas the blended is a mixture of several. Anyway this is all academic..If you haven't noticed, I'm a sort of whiskey buff. ;-)

Sounds like you had an interesting experience; if you did go home smelling like a bum, at least it was a bum with sophisticated taste in alcohol. haha
