How are you doing, everybody.
Happy new year!

It’s passed one year since last my diary and it’s passed one and half a year since I moved to Kamakura from Kyoto, hehehe.
I have been spending good days seeing beautiful ocean and eating great seafood in Kamakura.

During one and half a year, changes for me are
new friends and co-workers,
a longer distance to the jog from 7 km to 16 km,
my room from six jyo to two bed rooms and kitchen,
salary raised (^^) ,
and ....I, I am not changed so much, ummm.

P.S. A picture is enoshima island and Mt. Fuji which I took from my jogging course. I took a breath when I saw it for the first time.

It is not supposed to be this way. Actually I was promoted to someone and moved to Kamakura from Kyoto on August. I spent day after day too busy to take an enough sleeping time.

There are so many kinds of “markets”. “A private assistance market” is one of the markets which work based on market mechanisms without regulations. Private assistance depends on personal donations and volunteers. While, “official assistance” is a social welfare, which means that it is not bound by market principles.

Let me compare adults and children. Elder people can get a lot of supports from official assistance, but children have an advantage in case of private assistance. For example, speaking of organ transplantation, people are willing to donate for a little child, but it is hard for an elder man to get enough donation even if he is poor. It means children are more competitive than adults under private assistance market.

Say another example, more people donate for poor people in Africa and few people donate for homeless in your own country. Thus you would say that African people are more competitive than homeless in your country under private assistance. (That’s example, so the opposite is true.)

In private assistance people can choose any target as they like. There is not rule such as poorer people deserve to be helped. I think what strong segments are in this market;

1. Children; they are pretty and cute. People love to see their happiness. They don’t say critics and drivel. They are the strongest segment in private assistance.

2. Looks Good; Looks is very important whatever you like. Shabby, but not dirty. Pure, not but crooked. They are poor people who don’t have any advantage of you.

3. Sounds Good; Some people don’t want to pay for living expanse, but they’ll pay for education. Some people want to contribute for something elegant. You may hear that Japanese people like to spend their money for education, European people like to pay for eco or mammal such as wholes or dolphins. For American people, I’m not sure, right or arts or something like that.

4. Close, but invisible; In Japan, Asia donation is more popular than Africa, Cambodia is more popular than China, and oversea donation is better than domestic. As you know, donation have a lot of problem such as a rip-off, a controlling, a rake-off, and so on. You don’t want to see a dirty side. Therefore distance is another important factor.

Think all of above, A true weakness might be people who don’t have any competitiveness even in private assistance.

What I remember about my birthday party is that, when I went to grandma’s home, she picked up a hornets’ nest and gave me their larvae for nutrition. Damn! Who can eat? I thought it at that time. However, bring back that time, she’d cared about me. I cannot say my thanks to her because she is in heaven now. Sorry, grandma.

I don’t afford to look myself back anymore. I have to believe myself. You know, I am becoming a specialist about hardware and MOT (management of technology) so far, however I am ordered to work as a software specialist as well as I was. I’m an amateur at software, so I went to Avanti, a big book store near Kyoto station, and bought six engineering textbooks. Three days, 72 hours, are away to move. Well, I am going to read through all of them in the rest of time. Hehe. ^^
I can’t sleep in two days.

I’ve almost packed everything to move in a week, but I feel a bit messed up. Maybe I’m nervous to think that there is something I forget to do. I have four days off for the rest on my vacation. I am not willing to do anything to do for pleasure. ^^;

The other day, I checked the new office and I found a bakery stand specializing in bagel at Kamakura on the way home. The store sells many kinds of bagel. I bought 12 pieces and bit one in Shinkan-sen. The bagel was sweetish and softer than usual ones. I became happy a little because I saw 12 bagels look like angle halo. Hahaha, I'm becoming too sentimental. ^^

Eight hours in Shinkansen, however, gave me a head-time enough. I don’t have spare time to get worried about. I’m not familiar with a new job which I’m offered in the next office, so there are many things I have to do before my move.

After the long night, I woke up at 5am. Outside was already dimming. It meant that it was nearly dawn and I had to get up. I could not have breakfast because of the anxiety.
When I reach the office at 6:30, my bass was already there and he took me to his boss’s room. While he was ushering me, he did not say any word to me.
When he opened the door, his boss was sitting there and said “Good morning, Kyoko. Sorry you come here early morning. Please have a seat.”
Then, he smiled and said,
“You will be transferred to another department..”
“Wh, what?” I asked him involuntarily before he finished.
“..of Kamakura. You have to move to the different section.”
I repeated myself that what he was saying. Did he said Kamakura? Am I transferred to Kamakura? Does it mean I have to leave here in Kyoto?
“When am I supposed to move? ”
“In two weeks.”
“Two weeks!”
He continued to explain my next mission, but I couldn’t hear any word from him.

I was enjoying my vacation because I had days off on 24th through 27th (refer to the last journal). The last day I got a call from my boss at evening.
“I have something to have to inform you. Can you share your time tomorrow morning?”
“I’m afraid I can’t. ‘Cause I gonna go Fukushima pref. on business. I am not supposed to go to our office tomorrow.”
I felt something trouble, so I was avoiding talking with him long time. I wanted to hang up, but he insisted on it.
“When will you go?”
“I’ll have a meeting at 1pm, well.., I get to ride on a train ‘round 9 am.”
“How about 7am?”
“Something happened to me?”
“I can’t tell you on the phone. Besides, my boss will be there. Are you OK?”
“…OK.”
After I hung it up, I noticed his call registers. Three times he called me until I got the phone. “Something strange. Am I going to get scolded?”
I could not sleep that night.

Sorry guys if you might have different images from the title. Literally I spend all day on the hot beach, but the beach was too hot to be enjoyable for me. Alas, my room is hot and the beach is hot. What should I do? @^@;

On the beach, everybody got rest in the tent so as not to get sunburn. Beside, they swam with their T-shirts or swim suits due to same reason. ^^; Girls didn’t put their faces into water because their make-ups would come off. They were swimming like dogs. lol
I didn’t take off T-shirt and put suntan cream SPF50, but I get a little skin pain today.

Am I going to some supermarkets to get cool?

I wake up every early morning and want to do something. However, my knee (ligament) and hip joint was injured due to excessive activities since September. Although it is fine everyday, I cannot run, jog, play golf, and swim. ^^; In the last winter I couldn’t sleep because of severe pain, but I get better now.

I’m going to go to beach with my family tomorrow. I bought a tent and a watermelon for a game. What do you usually play on the beach?

Uni-clothing company announced that they use only English during their meetings in order to globalize the company. I heard that the company which I work at made same rule, but soon or later the rule disappeared. there are some advantages of using English. First, as you know, Japanese workers are not good at speaking English, therefore they don’t talk unnecessary things and it would make the meeting time short. Second, they don’t use connotations or speak vaguely in English and it would make the point clear.

Unfortunately nobody suggests using English during the meeting in my office. ‘Cause the meeting must give us the most relaxed time for them. ^^;

Gosh, I get three consecutive days off at last. I had a hard weekday as usual. ^^

It rained heavily during a week. On Thursday during the flight I was so happy to see Mt. Fuji through a sea of cloud, but I got soaked to the skin on the way to my office because of guerrilla rain (unpredictable local shower)!!

The sky was dark and strange purple color. Uhhh, creepy. Guerrilla rain has come to be common weather recently. Is it due to global warming? ^^;

BTW, the second picture is of the Osaka castle from the sky.

Japanese people don't drink milk and have dairy products so much. Actually I like milk, but I always have diarrhea. A lack of calcium is compensated by fish and sea weed, I guess.

I’ve heard that human being is only animal of full-grown creatures who can digest milk and get nutrition from it. Milk is usually for babies, so animals during babies' period have a kind of enzyme to digest milk and lost it when they grown up.

Long time ago, a man was born in Africa or somewhere and he kept the enzyme after he grown up. He was the first man to digest milk and his descendant spread toward western area. Therefore there is a big different of the absorption rate of milk between Caucasian and Asian. Uhhh, is it why I get diarrhea?

The other day, Oyama asked a Buddhist priest who came for Buddhist memorial service. He answered like this;

We want to have a fulfilling and enlightening job, but by and large we are not satisfied with our jobs and salaries.

何のために働くのか？
お金のため、多くの方はそう答えるでしょう。やりがいのある仕事、自分も成長する仕事、そういう仕事に多くの人はつきたいが、大概は自分の仕事に対して満足できず、また給料についてもほとんどの人が不満を持っていると思います。

Today, I’d like to introduce a story which I was impressed with.
The company, where 70% employees are mentally-challenged person, is Nippon Rikagaku Kogyo (Japan physics and chemistry Industry).

今日は、私が感動したひとつのストーリーを紹介しましょう。従業員の7割が知的障害者の会社、日本理化学工業です。

In 1959, when there were not any act for promotion of employment of physically handicapped in Japan, a teacher came to visit to NRK. She was a school teacher for the disabled near to NRK. She asked the president of NRK, Yasuhiro Oyama, to hire two disabled girls. Oyama was distressed about her request very much, then he said to decline, ‘I understand your request, but I can not afford to hire them. Sorry about that.’

1959年、まだ障害者雇用をしてなかったその昔、近くにある養護学校の先生が訪問してきたそうです。障害をもつ二人の少女を採用してほしいとの依頼でした。社長である、大山ヤスヒロさんは悩みに悩んだといいます。「お気持ちはわかりますが、うちでは無理です、申し訳ございませんが、」

However, the teacher didn’t give up and visited to ask again and again.
‘Please give them only working experience or they'll lead meaningless life in the facility without knowing fun and happiness of work’
Oyama was moved by her begging desperately and came to hire them under the conditions that they would work experientially for a week.

しかしその先生はあきらめず何度もやってきます
「せめてあの子達に働く体験だけでもさせてくだませんか？この子達は働く喜び
働く幸せを知らないまま施設で暮らすことになってしまいます」
頭を地面にこすり付けるようにしている先生の姿に大山さんは心を打たれ
一週間だけということで障害をもつ二人の少女に就職体験をさせることになりました

Once experiential work started, two girls worked very hard all day and impressed other workers. Although their works were easy; labeling, they intensely involved in their workings. A week had passed. Before the last day, ‘We have a something to talk to you,’ other workers gathered abound Oyama and implored him.
‘Please hire them as regular members. If they have something they can’t do, all of us will support them. Please!’

就職体験が始まると二人の少女は社員のみんなの心を動かすほど朝から晩まで一生懸命働きました。仕事は簡単なラベル貼りでしたが、一心不乱に働きました。
そして、一週間が過ぎ、就職体験が終わろうとしている前日のことです
「お話があります」
十数人の社員全員が大山さんを取り囲みました。「どうか大山さん、あの子達を正規の社員として採用してあげてください。もしあの子達にできないことがあるならわたしたちみんなでカバーします。だからどうか採用してあげてください」

Hello, I worked hard this week and got tired. Because of the hard work, I seem to be losing passion to study English. I just can’t put spirit into it. I’m kinda down.

A friend of mine in the lang-8 told me that I should reviewed English words by repeating 26 times even if they are difficult words and unfamiliar to me. I started memorizing new 1524 words last October and I have reviewed them 9 times for nearly 6 months. These words were all Greek to me at first, but as repeating them many time, they are infiltrating my brain. I am growing weary of it though. ^^; Maybe, I need some interval.

Pictures shows scallops I bought in the market for \88/each. But I found it later that a young cashier mispunch \88/all. Hehe lucky, but feel a sort of guilt.

In this season, Japan has a continuous spell of rainy weather. My room and office are like a sauna bath these days. ^^;

Clinging humidity makes me lose my appetite and energy. Therefore, I cooked "aji no nanban-zuke (nanban-zuke of horse mackerel)" because I want to have sour and hot foods.

I bought a dozen of small-sized horse mackerel (for 300 yen!! V^^ ), and removed the gill, gut. I fried deeply until they were golden after brushing both sides of fish with flour. While I made nanban source by mixed sliced onion and carrot with a cup vinegar, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/3 cup sauce, 1/3 sake, and 1 teaspoon red hot pepper, and lightly boiled them. I putted fried mackerel into the nanban source. After marinated for 30-60 mins, I ate two pieces.

Nanban-zuke is a kind of cuisine of marine or escabeche. Nanban implies cooking and foods came from Europe and originally means “southern barbarian” because they came from southern countries colonized by Netherland and Spain in 19th centuries.

Anyway, I’m going to enjoy them for a couple of days.

I went to the Suntory distiller to attend a seminar about single malt whisky blending. If you've read my journal for a long time, you know I like drinking. Even so, I rarely drink whisky because of strong flavor. The reason of my attend is that I was asked by my friend and the distiller is in my neighborhood. Suntory whisky, Yamazaki, is famous for
sophisticated aroma and flavors and its full body, which won the best gold in 2009 in the UK.

At first, my friend and I looked on the processing of whisky in the factory and we learned a lot of words about it such as mashing, distillation, maturation and so on. One of my favorite words is an “angel’s share”, which means a mount of evaporated whisky in a barrel during their aging. It is said that a fourth of whisky has evaporated for them. ^^;

Yamazaki is blended of same malt, but made by mainly different five kinds of barrel. We tasted unblended whisky of the different barrels and different aging time respectively. We learned how to taste them, color, aroma, flavor, and aftertaste. Each glass has 15ml and looks a little, but I was totally plastered when I tasted 10 glasses. ^^

When I got on the train on the way home, I thought I smelled like a bum. Hehe. Whatever, I understand whisky is a god send or something, but I still prefer beer. Haha.

By the way, I have a qustion about easy words, but I don't know the strict meaning. What is the defferent between clothes and clothng? As far as I know, "Clothes" refers to individual items that you wear. It is a T-shirt, pants, and socks. On the other hand, "clothing" is the collective noun for all sorts of clothes. Therefore,if I mention about your clohing, it includes your shirt, pants, whatever you wear. Am I right? Are they mutual exclusive or exchangable? Sorry for my stupid question.

PS. I have same words in Japanese.
Clothes=衣服（いふく）
Clothing=衣類（いふく）

As far as I remember, in the US, people have can choose small bags on a table in any restaurant or even a dinner. Sugar, non calorie sugar, non fat milk, and whatever you name it. I thought at that time that American people care about their health so much. On the other hand, here in Japan we don’t have many options of menu. We tend to be careless about caffeine or other ingredients, however we are strongly obsessed with calories. Women, especially young ladies, keep their intake-calorie less than 1,800 a day. When they buy something to eat, they always check the label; how much calorie, rather than nutrition.

I read an article about the new health-care law which NY enacted. All national chains with more than 20 locations must offer clear and conspicuous calorie information. It seems the most important obesity-related public policy. ^^ The article focus on fast food goers in low-income neighborhoods who often weigh convenience and value above all. They also fail to capture the long-term benefits of calorie counting, namely education and their health. Labels will offer many examples in exactly what 1,000 calories looks like.

If you eat more than how much calories you consume a day, you gain weight. It sounds to make sense, however I still wonder you body could absorb 100% calories in foods. How can foods-supplier count their calories? If does the label show wrong number?
Yes, the printed calories on the labels are dead wrong! Yes, they are less than 100 calories or nothing. Strongly believe it; I cannot absorb it, it’s zero calories and you cannot gain weight. Hehe. ^^;

When I joined a crush course; HarvXXd Negotiation Seminar, on the house, I got acquainted with many workers in different sections. The first day, everybody hesitated to speak English and probe their language skill each other because we were allowed to use only English. One of participants was a young guy and a glib talker. He seemed to have an experience to study English in the US and talked a lot like he boasted of his language ability. The second day, however, as the lesson was progressing, he had few things to speak, and senior workers started to speak haltingly on the other hand. The last day, he had nothing to speak about the subjects. It meant the guy was immature and the senior workers were qualified to learn the seminar regardless of their language ability because they had gotten a lot of experience on OJT.

We tend to have delusion that we have something new or get a big chance if we could speak second language like a native speaker. Actually learning English makes me to broaden my horizon. But it is no longer the Stone age. We can get many information around the world even in Japanese. The point is what kinds of horizon to be broadened.

In Avatar, Jake Sally could not change himself at last. Neytiri said “I see you”. It means I can see your character and identity behind your transient body. I thought these kinds of things while watching the DVD again.
