This phrases is mainly used in Osaka, Japan. This is Osaka dialect for why/what. However, this phrase is often used in Japanese comedy. It is used as response to a statement someone said that you consider crazy.

I don't know enough 日本語 to give my fave Japanese word, but my favorite word in English is "fisticuffs." It's such a strange word, but it's fun to say. It means a fist fight or brawl.

As for my favorite quote, that would be:

This is going to be somewhat crude for the English speakers, but this word is one I use a lot because I like it so much -- "dumbass." Something about the sound of that just sums up everything nicely.

In Japanese, right now probably 元気 (げんき). I don’t know if it's because it makes my son laugh, though, because he often responds when I try to teach it to him, "I'm not stinky!"

I wonder if everyone has heard a quote "April showers bring May flowers."
I think a valid interpretation of this would be "The rain in April is necessary because it makes the flowers bloom in May." Or more philosophically, "without the rain or hard times, a good thing would not be possible to come."

Sometimes, we put a lot of energy into studying foreign languages, but we don't really seem to make any progress...and this state of mind makes us feel discouraged easily. But suddenly, they say, we realize we can understand something we couldn't understand before, or we can communicate with someone much better than we expected.
I think this is it.
I believe, even when it doesn't feel like our language ability is improving obviously, beautiful flowers are waiting for the day they will bloom.

I learned this proverb from an English text book a decade ago. As for those who are struggling to acquire good foreign language skills, it must be the one that encourages us.

おてんば (tomboy)

I like it because of its origins: at some point it was derived from the Dutch word 'ontembaar', which means 'untamable'.

この言葉は、オランダ語からの借用語です。オランダ語では「馴らし得ない」という意味です。面白いでしょう?^^
