I listened to a class about graduate schools in America. (I've written about this class some times.)
I'll explain the difference between colleges in Japan and ones in America.

In Japan, everyone need to take an exam for entering a university. We have to take an exam to enter there. This is difficult so some people start studying for the exam when they are the first grade in high school.
Actually it needs much time to pass the exam for high level universities.

On the contrary, colleges in the US require no exam. They require the score in high school.

That's why Japanese students have learned more then American students at the start of the college life.

But there are a few professors who have enthusiasm to give a lecture in Japan and ordinary Japanese students aren't willing to study hard.
(This included me before I decided to study abroad. :P)

So Japanese college have to change themselves to increase their educational and researching quality. If not, Japanese could fall down. I don't hope that...

Thank you.

That's quite interesting. I knew you had to take an exam for Japanese universities, but the effects that the system has upon education in Japan is really something I never knew could happen. 頑張って下さい、やおっちさん!

wah, I'm too tired of finish this.

anyways, in the US (I know because I'm from there and went to a university). There are three types of post high school schools, which are community college, state colleges and universities. Universities are more top end, where state colleges are alright, and community college is for those who cannot get into a university and needs to be transferred to a university or state college.

We do have standardized test. The higher the score for the SAT or ACT tests as well as your grades in high school, the better chances you get into a good college/university. Also, with other things you do in high school, like extracurricular activities, being a part of clubs/organizations, volunteer work, being in a sports team, or in plays, will show the college/university board members that you are well-rounded and ready to go to college. Just good grades won't get you into a TOP school, but you have to do other things to show that you can multi-task and exceed in college/university. Also, there is a limit they can admit students in, so more the competition, the better your application have to be.

I watch in animes that Japanese people do take tests to get into a university, lower the test, the less rating the schools they are get into. What if 100 people scored really high in the tests, and the university will admit all of them? I'm curious!

Wow. To start studying for university exams at the beginning of high school seems extreme to me. It seems like you have to have a better idea of what you want to do at an earlier age. In America, there are standardized tests taken in high school that most universities require students take. Examples would be the SAT, ACT, etc. These tests alone don't decide whether or not the student can enter though. Like you said, there's the high school record, there's you high school ranking, and other things as well. You could say American universities are open to different ways of entering, but like you said, American universities don't normally have a unique entrance exam.

>wakachamo
thanks!
The college system in Janan has good points and bad points so I can't judge this simply.

>MaiStyle
thank you for collections and detailed description!
Most Japanese colleges judge only with the entrance exam so Japanese students do study only.
>What if 100 people scored really high in the tests, and the university will admit all of them? I'm curious!
The difficulty of the tests are various and most students hope to get in higher level university, so it won't happen that many students over the capacity are accepted in a college :)

>These tests alone don't decide whether or not the student can enter though.
That's better system than Japanese one, I think.
In university, students are required not only to pass exams, also to do something by themselves. Lots of Japanese college students seem to be defensive :P
